Edellisestä Englannin matkasta on vierähtänyt jo kolme vuotta joten voitte kuvitella että olin jokseenkin täpinöissäni kun ystävä kyseli haluaisiko joku lähteä hänen mukaansa reissuun. Matka oli lyhyt ja ytimekäs ja painottui tällä kertaa enimmäkseen shoppailun puolelle sillä henkilökohtainen Englannin matkaoppaani (eli isäntä) jäi kotiin Taku-kissan kanssa. Ainoat turistikohteet, jos niitä nyt siten voi kutsua, olivat jo aiemmin nähty poliisikoppi ja kahvila Hyde Parkin nurkalla jossa Prinsessa Diana ruukasi käydä salaa syömässä.
Yöpymispaikkana toimi tällä kertaa Thistle-hotelli Kensington Gardens’issa. Huolimatta siitä että hotellin alakerrassa on bensa-asema, tämä oli varsin kelpoisa hotelli tyylikkäine sisustuksineen. Hotellin hintavaa ravintolaa emme käyttäneet vaan hyödynsimme paikallisia ravintoloita ja ruokakauppoja. Queensway on täynnä ravintoloita, varsinkin erilaisia etnisiä paikkoja joten alueella on helppo löytää syötävää.

Ensimmäinen päivä Lontoossa oli omistettu Oxford streetille, josta nyt ei kamalasti ole kerrottavaa. Kaikki varmaankin jo tietävät Debenhamit ja muut ostoskadun tunnetut liikkeet. Toinen päivä meni sitten kolutessa Lontoon vintage-kauppoja Brick Lanella. Suurin osa edullisempien vintage-liikkeiden valikoimasta on meille vanhan vintagen harrastajille ihan liian uutta tavaraa, farkkuja, kirjavia kasarineuleita ja polyestermekkoja. Itse kutsuisin niitä vintage-liikkeen sijaan nimellä second hand-shop. Ne liikkeet joissa valikoimasta löytyy tavaraa myös 50-luvulta ja kauempaa menneisyydestä, ovatkin sitten hintatasoltaan huomattavasti kalliimpia. Kolme vuotta sitten ihastuimme isännän kanssa Vintage Emporiumiin, yhdistettyyn kahvilaan ja vintage-puotiin Bacon Streetillä, aivan siinä Brick Lanen kupeessa. Poikkesimme tällä kertaa siellä ystävän kanssa kahvitauolla. Valikoima oli yhtä hyvä ja samalla myös yhtä kallis kuin edelliskerrallakin, mutta jotakin tunnelmasta puuttui. Henkilökunta oli hieman erikoista eikä näyttänyt oikein tuntevan myymiään tuotteita.

Sen sijaan uudempi liike Blitz oli iloinen yllätys. Modernimmasta valikoimastaan huolimatta jättikokoinen Blitz oli kiinnostavasti sisustettu ja valikoimasta löytyi myös sellaisia erikoisuuksia kuin kimono-jakkuja ja kimonovöitä. Olisi ollut mahtavaa jos valikoimaan olisi sisältynyt enemmän myös vanhempaa vaatetavaraa 70- ja 80-lukujen tavaran lisäksi. Palvelu Blitzissä oli myös erittäin ystävällistä. Toisin kuin eräässä lähimaastossa sijaitsevassa antiikkiliikkeessä jossa myyjä ei sanonut sanaakaan (ei edes tervehtinyt) koko sinä aikana kun viivyimme liikkeessä. Blitzistä saimme myös vinkin torstaisista Spitalfieldsin vintagemarkkinoista.
Kotiinpaluupäivän aamuna kiirehdimme vielä pariksi tunniksi Spitalfieldsin markkinoille katsastamaan vintagevalikoimaa. En tiedä miten paljon myyjät vaihtuvat viikottain, mutta tällä kertaa vintagevaatteita ei kovin monella myyjällä ollut. Sen sijaan kaikkea muuta kiinnostavaa oli tarjolla eläinten kalloista painokirjasimiin, kirjoista astioihin ja koruista leluihin.
My last trip to England was over three years ago, so you can imagine how excited I was when my friend was asking if anyone would like to travel with her to London. Trip was short but intensive, and mainly about shopping, because my personal Guide to England (a.k.a hubby) stayed home with our Taku cat. Only tourist-y attractions, if you can call them that, were the Police box, seen earlier, and the cafe next to Hyde Park, where Princess Diana used to secretly go for a meal.
Our accommodation for the trip was this time Thistle in Kensington Gardens. Despite of the fact that there is a fuel station on the ground floor of the hotel, it was very nice hotel with stylish interior. We didn’t use the pricey restaurant of the hotel, but went to the local restaurants and food shops. Queensway is full of restaurants, especially all sorts of ethnic ones, so it is easy to find food in the area.

First day in London we conquered Oxford street. I’m pretty sure everyone already knows Debenhams and other well known shops on this shopping street, so there is not that much to tell. Second day was for vintage shops on Brick Lane. The affordable vintage shops mostly stock jeans, polyester dresses and 80’s knits, which are too new for those like me who like the really old stuff. Those shops which stock the old vintage, like 50’s and older, are however much more expensive. Three years ago when me and hubby visited London, we fell in love with Vintage Emporium, combined vintage shop and cafe on Bacon street. This time I visited there with my friend. Selection on vintage was as good and as expensive as last time, but something off the atmosphere was gone. The staff was a bit weird and they didn’t seem to even know what they were selling.
Newer shop Blitz, was pleasant surprise though. Despite of their modern selection, huge shop was nicely decorated and they also stocked a bit more unusual stuff like vintage kimono jackets and kimono belts. It would be awesome if they would also add some older pieces to to go with the 70’s and 80’s stuff. Service in Blitz was very friendly. Unlike in one antique shop nearby, where the staff member didn’t say a single word (not even a hello) while we stayed in the shop. Blitz staff also tipped us about the Spitalfield Vintage Market.
On our last day, just before returning home, we had couple hours to visit the Spitalfield Vintage Market. I don’t know how much the sellers vary from week to week, but this time there wasn’t that many selling vintage clothes. However there was a vast collection of everything else, from animal sculls to typesets, from books to china and from jewelry to toys.

Ah the Emporium….last time I visited (a year ago?) there was a small dog pissing under a chair. I kid you not. Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go back!
Arabella – This time there was small dog and huge dog wandering around and a customer came in with another huge dog. Irish wolfhounds I believe they were. In Finland dogs are not allowed in cafe’s. At all. I don’t know if I want to go back either.
only service dogs (blind people and handicapped) are allowed in store over here. I’ve never understood why people b ring their pets shopping. Then again, I have cats.
thorne garnet – I don’t get it either. However I have seen some companies where the workers are allowed to take their dogs with. It’s a different thing in a company where customers don’t go to, but in shops or restaurants where there is the hygienic issues and also customers might get allergy reactions etc. I have a cat but I would not take a dog to work either, nor any animal, even though I love animals.
I think this little fella was with the staff – hence my shock. Rhia – please feel free to delete my comment. Although I laugh about it now, I wouldn’t like to be sued for slander!

Arabella – Those two dogs I mentioned, they were also with the staff. In my honest opinion, animals should not be allowed in cafes and restaurants at all. How do you make sure fore starters that they don’t go licking the buns and cookies on the counter. The Irish wolfhound is certainly large enough to reach. On one point of view, it’s cute and adorable, but on one hand, I don’t want strange animals snooping around when I’m trying to eat my cake. I don’t think it’s slandering to say the truth, pets shouldn’t be in restaurants at all, not to mention them peeing in there.
And yes, the trip was lovely indeed!
OIh! Nuo markkinat olisivat totta vieköön kiinnostaneet meikänaistakin, varsinkin nuo vanhat peltimurkit; voi moro miten ihania!
Karakali – Tuossa on vain murto-osa siitä purkkimäärästä mitä siellä oli tarjolla. Peltipurkkeja jos jonkinlaisia, pääasiassa juuri tuollaisia vanhempia ja aika kuluneitakin. Jos tulee reissua Lontooseen niin tuota Spitalfieldsiä suosittelen ehdottomasti, siellä on toripäivä joka päivä, mutta torstaisin (ja ilmeisesti myös viikonloppuisin) on tätä vanhaa roinaa.
