Edellisen postauksen kommenteissa tulin maininneeksi että olen aikonut ommella tweedhameeni pariksi 20-luvun henkisen väljän jakun. No innostuin asiasta niin että päätin tarttua toimeen samantien, sillä kevät- ja syystakkieni valikoima on varsin hintsunlainen, suorastaan olematon. Halusin koota tähän vähän fiilistelyjä tweed-asuista sekä pikkuruisen tweed-tietopaketin teidän iloksenne.
20- ja 30-luvuilla tweed-kävelypuvut olivat suosittuja. Ne olivat käytännöllisiä ja lämpimiä arkivaatteita ja sopivat uuteen aktiivisen nuoren naisen elämään. Ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeen syntyi uudenlainen työssäkäyvien naisten joukko. Sen lisäksi että heillä oli käytettävissä rahaa itseensä, he myös tarvitsivat sopivia asuja aktiiviseen elämään. Tweediä on alunperin pidetty miesten materiaalina. Coco Chanel oli järkevien arkivaatteiden uranuurtaja. Hän suosi miellyttäviä ja käytännöllisiä materiaaleja kuten tweediä ja jerseytä. Coco lainasi ideoita miesten tweedasuista surutta ja loi ikonisen Chanel-jakkunsa jo 20-luvulla, tweedistä tietenkin.
Tweed on lähtöisin 1700-luvun Skotlannista. Sittemmin erilaisia kudoksia on kehitetty ja valikoimaan on saatu pehmeämpiä ja laskeutuvampia vaihtoehtoja. Asiantuntijoiden mukaan kaikkein laadukkainta tweediä on Harris Tweed joka on maailman ainoa kangas jonka tuotanto on Parlamentin säädöksen suojelema. Aito Harris Tweed kudotaan edelleen käsin. Sitä valmistavat vain Skotlannin Ulko-Hebrideillä asuvat saaristolaiset. On lienee sanomattakin selvää että Harris Tweed on varsin kallista kangasta. Onneksi maailmasta löytyy edullisempiakin tweedlaatuja meille joilla ei ole varaa Harrisiin.

In the comments of my previous post I mentioned that I have been planning on making 20’s style jacket to be worn with my tweed skirt. Well I got so excited about it so I decided to start the project straight away. My selection of light weight spring and autumn coats are quite small, non-excistant I might say. I wanted to gather some inspiration for tweed outfits and tiny tweed-info package for your pleasure.
Tweed suits became popular amongst women in the 20’s and 30’s. They were practical and warm everyday wear and suited nicely to women’s new active life. After WW I, new type of working women were formed. Women had money to use for themselves, but they also needed suitable outfits for activities. Untill 20’s, tweed has been considered as masculine material. Coco Chanel was the pioneer of comfy everyday-wear. She loved practical and comfy fabrics like tweed and jersey. Coco borrowed ideas from men’s clothes without any hesitation and created her iconic Chanel Jacket in the 20’s, made of tweed of course.
Tweed is originated to 18th century Scotland. Later different weaves and softer materials have added to the selection of tweeds. According to professionals, Harris Tweed is the best quality tweed there is. It is the only fabric in the world that has been protected by the Act of Parliament. Genuine Harris Tweed is still hand woven. It is made by the islanders living in Outer Hebrides, Scotland. It goes without saying, Harris Tweed is very expensive material. Thankfully world is full of cheaper quality tweeds for us who can’t afford Harris.

Oh how I adore the look of 1920s-style coats – (well a lot of 1920s-style fashion in general) – though I do wish there was more inspirational diversity when it comes to different body shapes… I just can’t see myself in those straight, curve-free designs. (Though I did pick up some gorgeous purple cutwork velvet that I think is destined for a 20s-style cocoon coat when I get around to it..)
Dawn – Body shape was long time also my problem when it comes to 20’s style. But then I decided that who cares, I’m going to create some 20’s style outfits anyways. And if you carefully study the whole decade you can see that early 20’s is actually quite different than the end of the decade. (But then again here in Finland, most people think you’re wearing something from the 50’s despite of what ever you wear ;) ) Purple velvet cocoon coat sounds fabulous! Velvet is currently my secret passion ;)
