Elämä hektistyy ja sosiaalinen media on täynnä nopeita dopamiinipurskeita ja nättejä kuvia ihmisistä ja kodeista. Se antaa monesti vääristyneen kuvan siitä mitä se tavallinen arki on ja miltä ihmisten kotona oikeasti arjessa näyttää. Monissa kodeissa eletään arkea, jossa eivät kukkakimput korista ruokapöytää, lipastojen päällä ei näy pölyttömiä upeita asetelmia ja eteisen on vallottanut kenkien ja takkien armeija. Olen viime aikoina miettinyt sitä, että juuri tässä hetkessä olen oikeastaan ihan todella onnellinen. Elämä on melko arkista. Aamulla kissojen aamupala ja oma aamupala ja kahvikupillinen, töihin, kotiin tai harrastuksiin, ruuanlaittoa, uunien lämmitystä, tiskit koneeseen jne. Viikonloppuisin siivoilua, saunaan, laiskottelua, pieniä askareita kotona, kauppaan. Elämässä ei samaan aikaan tapahdu paljon mitään ja kuitenkin tapahtuu paljon kaikenlaista arkista. Olen ymmärtänyt että tämä oikeastaan on juuri sitä mistä olen koko elämäni haaveillut. Sellaista arkista hyvää elämää jossa saa tehdä ja harrastaa itselle mielekkäitä asioita, ympäristössä ja yhteisössä joka on minulle tärkeä. No okei, työnteko nyt on välttämätön paha, mutta noin muuten tämähän on juuri sitä mitä olen aina halunnutkin. Kaikki on siis elämässä ihan mallillaan lopulta.

Tämä kaikki hyvä ja mielekäs elämä ei tietenkään tarkoita, että kotimme muistuttaisi niitä somen kiiltokuvan-kauniita koteja, joissa kaikki on huolettoman tarkasti aseteltu paikoilleen ja upeat viherkasvit, antiikkihuonekalut ja kukkamaljakot muodostavat harmosia kokonaisuuksia ikkunoista tulvivan valon kanssa. Ehei. Meillä eletään arkea jossa imurointi välillä unohtuu useammaksi kuukaudeksi kun käydään harrastuksissa tai käytetään vahingossa koko päivä kaupungin ostosreissuun. Meillä eletään arkea, jossa joka huoneessa on joku keskeneräinen remppa- tai harrastusprojekti. Meillä eletään arkea jossa työkalut seilaavaat huoneesta ja projektista toiseen välillä ruokapöydän kautta ja keskeneräiset käsityöt valloittavat sohvan. Meillä eletään arkea jossa eteinen toimii erinäisten esineiden välivarastona ja kissojen tiputtamat tavarat saattavat joskus jäädä lattialle lojumaan päiviksi. Meillä siivoaminen on tärkeysjärjestyksessä listalla viimeisenä vaikka sitäkin toki tehdään jonkin verran lähes päivittäin. Siisteyttä tärkeämpää meille kuitenkin on että koti on meille myös turvasatama ja paikka jossa saamme levätä ja kerätä voimia.

Yritämme tietysti taklata näitä kodin ongelmakohtia koko ajan ja keksiä parempia tapoja siihen, että erilaisilta tavarakasoilta vältyttäisiin ja roskat löytäisivät roskikseen. Kerroin viimeksi kodin järkestyksen haasteista hiukan alle 1,5 vuotta sitten joulukalenterissa. Sen jälkeen on jo osa projekteista valmistunut (ainakin melkein) ja osalle tavaroista on löytynyt lopputisjoituspaikkoja ja säilytyspaikkoja. Homma kuitenkin jatkuu, sillä myös remontti ja sisustaminen jatkuu. Yksi iso ongelmakohta on muovijäte. Muovijäte on meilläyksi jätejakeista suurimpia. Sitä kertyy todella paljon sillä nykyisin valitettavasti lähes kaikki pakataan muoviin, jopa hiukan tarpeettomasti. Keittiön lisäksi muovijätettä kertyy eniten salissa, jossa vietämme suurimman osan hereilläoloajastamme. Ajatuksena onkin hankkia saliin ihan kunnolliset roskikset sekä muoville että paperille ja ehkä myös kartongille. Silloin roskat tulisi laitettua heti roskiin, eikä ne jäisi lojumaan ja kasaantumaan. Hankaluutta tässä tuottaa kuitenkin se että en halua mitään moderneja rumia muovisia roska-astioita vaan niiden pitäisi istua muuhun salin sisustukseen mieluiten niin että ne olisivat kierrätettyjä ja maastoutuisivat niin ettei niitä edes älyäisi roskikseksi. Olen yrittänyt metsästää sopivaa astiaa tai kalustetta kirppiksiltä, mutta vielä ei ole tärpännyt. Toinen iso ongelma on alati liikkuvat käsityöprojektikasat, jotka kulkevat yläkerrasta alakertaan ja takaisin ja pyörivät olohuoneen pöydillä, lattioilla, tuoleilla ja sohvalla. Jotkut projekteista valmistuvat aikanaan, jotkut eivät koskaan. Itseäni ärsyttävät eniten pinot jotka joko hameenhelmojeni tahi kissojen myötävaikutuksella uhmaavat painovoimaa ja usein lopulta leviävät lattioille. Niille täytyisi löytää joku verrattain helppo ja nätti väliaikaiskoti. Joitakin vuosia sitten kaikki kirpputorit olivat täynnä pieniä jalallisia käsityölipastoja. Niiden aika näyttää olevan ohitse, sillä en ole löytänyt mieleistä mistään. Kirppiksillä niitä ei tule vastaan ollenkaan ja some-kirppiksilläkin niitä näyttää olevan melko vähän. Lisäksi pitäisi keksiä joku keino säilyttää viikottaisten harrastekurssien välineistö. Nyt ne pyörivät kestokasseissa pitkin lattioita ja ovat jatkuvasti vähän tiellä, mutta poiskaan niitä ei voi laittaa koska niitä kuitenkin tarvitaan viikottain.

Life is becoming increasingly hectic, and social media is full of quick dopamine rushes and pretty pictures of people and homes. This often gives a distorted picture of what everyday life is really like and what people’s homes actually look like in the everyday life. In many homes, everyday life is lived without bouquets of flowers decorating the dining table, without beautiful and dust-free arrangements on the dressers, and the hallway is taken over by an army of shoes and coats. Lately, I’ve been thinking that right now, I’m actually really happy. Life is pretty ordinary. In the morning, we feed the cats and have our own breakfast and a cup of coffee, then go to work, come back home, or go to the hobbies, cook, heat up the fireplaces, load and unload the dishwasher, etc. On weekends, we usually clean, go to the sauna, laze around, do small chores at home, and go do the groceries. Not much happens in my life right now, and yet all kinds of everyday things happen. I’ve realized that this is actually what I’ve dreamed of my whole life. An ordinary, good life where I can do and pursue things that are meaningful to me, in an environment and community that is important to me. Okay, working is kind of a necessity, but otherwise this is exactly what I’ve always wanted. So, everything in life is fine after all.

Of course, this good and meaningful life does not mean that our home resembles those glossy magazine homes where everything is carefully arranged and beautiful green plants, antique furniture, and vases of flowers create a harmonious combinations with the light flooding in through the crystal clear windows. No, no. We live an everyday life where vacuuming is sometimes forgotten for several months when we are busy with hobbies or end up spending the whole day shopping in the city. We live a life where every room has some unfinished renovation or hobby project. We live a life where tools float from room to room and project to project, occasionally via the dining table, and unfinished crafts take over the sofa. We live a life where the hallway serves as a temporary storage space for various items, and things dropped by the cats may sometimes remain on the floor for days. Cleaning is at the bottom of our list of priorities, although we do some cleaning almost every day. However, more important to us than tidiness is that our home is also a safe haven and a place where we can rest and recharge our batteries.

Of course, we are constantly trying to tackle these problems at home and come up with better ways to avoid piles of stuff or to make sure that rubbish ends up in the bin. I last wrote about the challenges of organizing our home a little less than 1.5 years ago in the Christmas calendar. Since then, some of the projects have been completed (at least almost completed) and some of the items have found their final resting places and storage spaces. However, the work continues, as the renovation and decorating also continue. One major problem is plastic waste. Plastic waste is one of our largest waste sections. Unfortunately, a lot of it accumulates because nowadays almost everything is packaged in plastic, even when it is not really necessary. In addition to the kitchen, most plastic waste accumulates in the living room, where we spend most of our waking hours. The idea is to get proper rubbish containers for the living room for plastic, paper, and maybe even cardboard. That way, trash would be thrown away immediately and wouldn’t be left lying around and piling up. The difficulty here, however, is that I don’t want any ugly modern plastic bins. Bins should fit in with the rest of the living room decor, preferably be secondhand, and blend in so that you wouldn’t even recognize them as rubbish bings. I have tried to find suitable bins or furniture at flea markets, but I haven’t had any luck yet. Another big problem is the ever-moving piles of craft projects that travel from upstairs to downstairs and back again, hopping around on the living room tables, floors, chairs, and sofa. Some of the projects are completed in due course, some never are. What annoys me most are the piles that, with the help of my skirt hems or cats, defy gravity and often end up scattered across the floor. They need to find a relatively easy and pretty-to-look-at temporary home. A few years ago, all the flea markets were full of small craft chests with legs. Their time seems to be over, as I haven’t found any that I like anywhere. You don’t see them at flea markets at all, and even on social media marketplaces, there seem to be very few. In addition, I need to find a way to store the equipment for my weekly hobby classes. Right now, they are scattered around the floors in reusable bags and are constantly in the way, but I can’t put them away because I need them every week.
