Koskapa olen onneton märkäkorva-pelkuri, en ole aikaisemmin uskaltanut tehdä Amazon-ostoksia. Nyt kuitenkin innostuin sillä bongasin (jostain blogista jota en enää löytänyt että olisin voinut linkittää) upean kirjan. Yhden kirjan innostamana siis tartuin näppäimistöön ja surffasin Amazonin ihmemaailmaan.
Because I am poor little noobie I haven’t had the gutts to make Amazon-order, until now. I got interested when I saw a fantastic book in one blog (which I couldn’t find anymore so that I could have linked it here). So because of this one book I grabbed my keyboard and surfed to the amazing world of Amazon.
Himoitsemani kirja oli Jazz Age Beauties, kokoelma legendaarisen Ziegfeld Follies-teatterin valokuvaaja Alfred Cheney Johnstonin pitkään kadoksissa olleita valokuvia. Kirja on täynnä häikäisevää kauneutta ja upeita valokuvia. Johnstonin malleina toimivat Ziegfeldin tanssijat, joista monet myöhemmin kuuluisia näyttelijöitä kuten Mary Pickford, Theda Bara ja Louise Brooks. Kirja sisältää alastomuutta, mutta hyvällä maulla tehtyjä kauniita potretteja. Rakastan noita jäykkiä, teennäisiäkin poseerauksia ja hieman ujoja ilmeitä.
The book I was looking for was Jazz Age Beauties, long lost collection of Ziegfeld Follies-theater photographer alfred Cheney Johnston’s photographs. Book is full of dazling beauty and magnificent photos. Johnstons models were Ziegfeld girls. Many of them became famous actresses later, like Mary Pickford, Theda Bara and Louise Brooks. Many of the photos are nude portraits but made with class and good taste. I love those stiff, even theatrical poses and little bit shy face expressions.
Noh, postikuluista piti tietysti ottaa kaikki irti joten tilasin toisenkin kirjan, Couture Sewing Techniques. Kirja kertoo havainnollisesti couture-muodin ompelutekniikoista, alkaen erilaisista käsinpistoista aina ompelurakenteisiin ja pieniin ompelujippoihin joita ei päältä päin näe. Kirja on sangen raskasta luettavaa joten siihen perehtyminen ottaa oman aikansa. Kuvia kirjassa on verrattain vähän. Kyseessä on siis enemmänkin ammattilaisen tekniikka-opas kuin katselukirja muodin harrastajalle. Vihdoinkin couturen salat avautuvat!
Of course I had to take all the advantage of post fees, so I ordered another book aswell. Couture Sewing Techniques tells descriptively about couture fashion sewing techiques, starting from different hand stiches to sewing structures and little tricks you can’t see from outside. Book is rather heavy reading and there is not much pictures in it. It’s more like professionals technique guide than look book. Finally the secrets of couture are revealed!
Kolmas kirja ei ole Amazonista vaan Akateemisesta kirjakaupasta. Hankin se jo joskus syksyllä mutta en ole ehtinyt sitä esitellä. The London look pureutuu lontoolaiseen muotiin pohjamutia myöden. Kirja käy läpi Lontoon muodin historian 1800-luvusta nykypäivään. Pääpaino kuitenkin on historiassa ja nykysuunnittelijat käydään läpi nopeasti viimeisessä kappaleessa. Tästä kirjasta bongasin tässä postauksessa käsittelemäni kovakuoriais-kirjonnan.
Third book is not from Amazon, but from local book shop called Akateeminen. I got it already in last autumn but I haven’t got around to show it to you. The London look digs deep into London fashion going it through from 1800’s all the way to 2000’s. Main issue is the histry, modern designers are only mentioned briefly in the last chapter. From this book I found the beetle-embroidery I wrote about in this post.
