Lupasin näyttää että mitä ostoksia sitä tuli Worldconista tehtyä. Tai no tarkemmin sanottuna Dublinista, sillä eivät nämä kaikki ole sieltä tapahtumasta. Poikkesimme saapumispäivänä Dublinin sarjakuvakaupassa josta bongasin pari Dr Who-kirjaa. Olisin vielä halunnut katsastaa ihan kunnon kirjakaupan valikoiman, mutta matkan varrelle osui ihan vaan pieni peruskirjakauppa jossa oli enimmäkseen perus-romskuja ja paperitavaraa. En siis saanut tällä kertaa täydennettyä pukuhistoriaan ja vintageen liittyvää kirjastoani.

Toisena matkapäivänä jouduin ostamaan uudet kengät, kuten jo aiemmin mainitsinkin. Ne ovat tyylistäni täysin poiketen melko modernit muotoilultaan ja väriltään metallinharmaat. Ne tuntuivat kaupassa ihanan pehmeiltä jalkaan. Ja sitä ne toki ovatkin, mutta uutuuttaan kyllä saivat rakot silti aikaan varpaisiin. Paluumatkalla hostelliin poikkesimme myös kohdalle osuneeseen kirja-antikvaariin josta löysin edullisesti Wallis Simpsonin elämäkerran.

Itse tapahtumasta ostin jo jonkin aikaa havittelemani Harry Potter-taikasauvan, joka muuten aiheutti lentokentän turvatarkastuksessa pientä hämminkiä. Olin pakannut sen käsimatkatavaroihin ihan vaan varmuuden vuoksi, mutta en tajunnut että se tietysti näkyy läpivalaisussa. Turvahenkilö kysyi läpivalaisussa minulta onko se Harry Potter-sauva. En ymmärtänyt saati kuullut kunnolla kysymystä ja yritin päästä pienoisruuhkan takaa lähemmäs jotta kuulisin paremmin. Siinä kohtaa tarkastaja kuitenkin jo availi laukkuani ja rasiaa. Nähtyään mitä se sisältää hän totesi että no onhan se Potter-sauva johon toistin typerästi että joo Potter-sauva on. Puoliso ehätti siihen selittämään, että en ollut ymmärtänyt kysymystä. Jos olisin tajunnut mitä kysytään tai ottanut rasian ulos laukusta erilliseen läpivalaisuun, olisin välttynyt hämmingiltä. Osasin sitten seuraavassa läpivalaisussa välilaskupaikassa ottaa sen erikseen. Varoitus siis teille muillekin Potteristeille, jotkin autenttiset sauvat ovat sisältä metallia.

Ensimmäisenä coni-päivänä kävin kuuntelemassa Katrin Kanian ja Jeannette Ng:n keskiaika-tekstiililuentoa. Myöhemmin bongasin salista Katrinin myyntipöydän jossa oli tyrkyllä monenlaista keskiaikaisiin käsitöihin liittyvää tarviketta. Päädyin ostamaan kaksi palaa veliiniä (ohutta pergamenttia) kokeiluun. En tiedä vielä mitä niillä teen, mutta ehkä niille jotakin käyttöä löytyy. Keskiaikana veliiniä on käytetty kirjoittamiseen paperin sijaan. Niin ja ostinhan minä Osuuskumman pöydästä myös kotimaista kumma-kirjallisuuttakin.

Toissavuonna ostin Helsingin Worldconista isännälle tuliaisiksi Virginia Heyn signeeratun fanikuvan. Tällä kertaa ostin samalta italialaiselta myyjältä Kate Mulgrewn signeeratun fanikuvan. Kumpaisellekin pitää etsiä sopiva paikka seinältä. Siinäpä ne tämän kertaiset ostokset, varsin maltiliset. Paitsi lisäksi tietysti muutama pieni kiitos-lahja kissavahdillemme.

I promised to show you what shopping I did at Worldcon. Well, actually what shopping I did in Dublin, these are not all from the event. On the day of arrival we stopped at local comic book shop. I found couple interesting Dr Who books that I had to get. I would have wanted to also check proper book shop, but we could only find small with regular novels and paper goods. So I didn’t get to fill my clothing history and vintage library this time.

On the second travel day I had to buy new shoes, like I mentioned before. They are quite different to my usual style, quite modern in design and colour is gunmetal. They felt very soft in the shop. And that they are, but when brand new and walking a lot, they did manage to bring me blisters. On our way back to the hostel we made quick stop at the second hand book shop. I found book about Wallis Simpson with very affordable price.

From the actual event I was able to find authentic Harry Potter wand, which I have been looking for some time now. That caused a bit of a hassle at the airport. I had packed it on the hand luggage just in case, but I didn’t realize it will show up on the scanner. Security person asked me if that’s a Harry Potter wand. I didn’t hear nor understand what they were saying and was trying to get through the crowd closer, so I could understand what’s going on. But by that time the security person was already opening my bag and the wand box. When they took the wand out they said well that’s a Harry Potter wand, to which I stupidly repeated, yes it’s a Potter wand. Hubby hurried to explain that I did not understand the question. If I would have heard and understood what is being asked, or would have been clever enough to take it out of the bag, we could have avoided all this commotion. On the lay-by I atleast realized to take it out of the bag. So warning to all you Potterists, some authentic wands contain metal.

On our first con day I went to listen the medieval textile talk by Katrin Kania and Jeannette Ng. Later I noticed Katrin’s stall at the sellers hall. She had all sorts of medieval handcraft stuff there for sale. I decided to buy two pieces of vellum (fine parchment). I don’t know what I’m going to do with that yet, but I’m assuming I can figure something out. On medieval times they used vellum instead of paper. Oh yeah, and I bought also some Finnish “weird”-literature from Osuuskumma publishers.

Two years ago from Helsinki Worldcon, I got Virginia Hey’s autographed picture to hubby, as a gift. This time I got Kate Mulgrews autographed picture from the same Italian seller. Now we need to find place on the wall for both. And those are all of my humble little shoppings from this trip. Except of course some thank-you-gifts to our cat sitter.
