Lokakuun linkit / Links of October

After a long time I finally had time to put together link roundup. Originally I was going to publish this last month, but life happened. So here they finally are, little bit of everything.

Buly 1803
L’Officine Universelle Buly on erilainen kosmetiikkakauppa. Yritys aloitti 1800-luvun alussa parfyymikauppana jonka omisti Jean-Vincent Bully.
L’Officine Universelle Buly is a different cosmetic shop. It started in the early 1800’s as a perfumerie, owned by Jean-Vincent Bully. About hundred years it charmed customers with perfumes and other cosmetics, but for some reason it was then forgotten. Now it is blooming again with new owners and new brand. Concept is focused on naturally sourced ingredients. Product line includes skin and hair products, brushes and sponges, scented candles and matches. Main boutique is in Paris, but there are other stores for example in Taipei and London, all decorated in antique style.

I’m always a bit smitten when someone comes up with new idea of making commercial products. raubdruckerin from Berlin turns surfaces of urban streets into textile prints, by hand. You only need some masking tape, paint roll and some fabric paint and voila: bag or t-shirt is ready. So simple and yet so clever (and little bit geeky too)! From which city would you like to get print from?

Egyptologi Colleen Darnell / Egyptologist Colleen Darnell
I have followed Colleen’s Instagram account for a while now. He is egyptologist by profession and teaches art history in Hartford University. At first I thought her Instagram account was made for made-up character. It seemed way too perfect for little old me who loves 1920’s and loves history and used to be very into Egypt and dreamed of being an archeologist (influenced by Indiana Jones, of course). But no, Colleen is real person and obviously tremendously good at her job. Racked made a little documentary about her recently, it can be found on their FB-page

Yksityisen armeijan pelossa Ohion osavaltio julisti Pinkertonit lainsuojattomiksi.
Every now and then movies and other entertainment mentions Pinkerton detectives. It’s not just any made-up detective agency, but one of the first private detective agencies in the world. Barrelmanufacturer Allan Pinkerton became detective by accident. By a coincident he helped police to catch counterfeit gang and after that started getting other detective gigs too. He founded his own detective agency around 1890. Company slogan “We never sleep” and their logo with huge open eye in the middle, created the term meaning private detective, “private eye”. By 1890’s Pinkertons already had over 2000 detectives and 30 000 reserves around America. Being afraid of someone hiring them as private army state of Ohio outlawed Pinkertons. Despite of that, company still works. Now it’s mainly working on field of security surveillance and security risk mapping.

Metropolitanin museolla on suurin kokoelma hänen potrettejaan.
If modern people are dependent on selfies, countess de C. is not far behind. She was obsessed by her own beauty and had over 400 portraits taken of herself, in various costumes and poses. At that time it was very expensive, after all it was mid 1800’s, when it was very rare to get a photograp of yourself. Apparently she was unpleasant character, had little to no friends and she didn’t really talk to other women. She wasn’t a liked person at all and most of her time she used on immortalizing her beauty. When she aged, she mostly shut herself inside her home and removed all mirrors from there too. Metropolitan museum has the largest collection of her portraits.

Savukemainokset / Cigarette ads
Mainoksissa on häikäilemättä käytetty kaikkea vauvoista Joulupukkiin. Aikamoista!
Do you still remember the time when it was legal to advertice cigarettes? Last ads were quite modest, but in the past advertisers made you believe cigarettes were healthy, made you slimmer and helped you to get a spouse, money and fame. They used in the ads everything from babies to Santa. That’s quite unbelievable!

Bullet bra
Yksi erikoisimmista 1900-luvun muotivirtauksista on mielestäni ns. bullet bra, rinnat luodin mallisiksi muotoilevat rintaliivit. Tyypilliseen rakenteeseen kuuluu spiraalin muotoon ommeltu tukitikkaus. Rintojen koosta riippui tietenkin se miten silmiinpistävän siluetin liivit antoivat. Useinkaan rinnat eivät yltäneet liivien kärkiin asti vaan kärkeen laitettiin toppaus joka täytti tyhjäksi jäävän osan ja auttoi saavuttamaan halutun muodon.
One of the most unusual fashion style of the 1900’s in my opinion is so called bullet bra. You know, the bra that turns breasts into bullet shape. In extreme they were like sharp missiles you could poke your friends eye out, and at the most modest style was soft cone shape. Typical construction included spiral stitching on the cups. Depending on the breast size you had either very modest or rather extreme silhouette. Often natural breasts didn’t fill the whole bra, so extra padding was used to fill the empty tip of the bra and helped to create the desired bullet shape.
