Merenneitojen kaupunki / Mermaid city
Floridassa, Yhdysvalloissa sijaitsee syvä luonnonlähde Weeki Wachee. 40-luvulla laivaston upseeri ja uimakouluttaja Newton Perry perusti sinne merenneito-teatterin, paikan jossa huipputreenatut ja luonnollisesti kauniit ammattisukeltajat esittivät yleisölle temppuja ja vedenalaista teatteria. 50-luvun lopulla tuotantoyhtiö ABC osti tämän vaatimattoman mutta erittäin suositun nähtävyyden ja rakennutti sinne huippukalliin 400-paikkaisen vedenalaisen teatterin. Ja edelleen merenneidot esittävät siellä temppujaan.
In Florida, United States is located natural spring of Weeki Wachee. To that very place, navy officer and swimming trainer Newton Perry founded a mermaid theater, a place where highly trained and naturally very beautiful professional divers perform tricks and underwater theater to the audience. In the late 50’s production company ABC bought this rather modest, but very popular attraction and built top of the range 400-seat underwater theater. And still mermaids are showing their best tricks over there.

Hightech-kirjallisuutta 1500-luvulta / Hightech book from 1500’s
Kirjaan on painettu mm. Martin Lutherin Pieni Katekismus. Muita kirja-aarteita voi selata kansalliskirjaston Flickr-sivuilla.

Moskovan metro / Moscow Underground
Stalinin tilaama metro on neuvostopropagandaa parhaimmillaan. Hän itse kutsui hulppeita metroasemia “kansan palatseiksi” ja vuonna 1935 valmistunutta rakennustyötä markkinoitiin sanoin “Koko maa rakentaa metroa”.
If you have visited Moscow, you what this is about. Photographer David Burdeny applied a whole year for a permission to photograph Moscow Metro at night, when trains are not running and stations are empty. Finally it payed off and here is the result. Metro, ordered by Stalin, is the Soviet propaganda at it’s best. Stalin called the metro stations “Palaces for the people”. Building work was marketed with words “The whole country is building the metro”. It was opened in 1935.

New Yorkin kattoterassiteatterit / New York roof terrace theaters
As it appears, roof terrace theaters were some sort of fashion thing in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. There was several roof theaters in New York at that time, and they offered various amusements from concerts to cabaret, acrobatic acts to theater plays. Roof terraces often had also cafe table sets and decorations like ponds or palm trees and of course a till to buy refreshments. Unfortunately roof theaters all vanished during 1930’s.

Maailman vanhin resepti / World’s oldest written recipe
Anyone got surprised if I tell you the world’s oldest written recipe is for beer? It is made with fermented barley flour, dates and coriander or cardamom. Recipe was found on over 5000 years old, Sumerian clay tablet. Source is not confirmed, so this could also be fake news.

Meksikon jättikristallit / Giant crystals of Mexico
Maailma on ihmeellinen paikka.
World is wondorous place. Or what do you think about these amazing caves filled with giant crystals? They are located in Naica, Mexico. Caves were found in 2000 by miners who work in the lead and silver mine right next to the caves. Conditions in the caves are quite harsh so it is very difficult and slow to study it. Temperatures in the caves are very high and crystals are very sharp. Scientist are petitioning the UNESCO World heritage status for the caves. Documentary about the caves in here
