Joulu meni, tapansa mukaan hirmu nopeasti. Aattona ajelimme maalle. Päivä kului perinteisellä rutiinilla: ensin päiväkahvi, sitten saunan lämmitys ja ruuan viimeistelyä. Äiti oli pitkästä aikaa hakenut metsästä kuusen pirttiin. Useana vuonna kuusta ei ole ollut ollenkaan. Tänäkin vuonna oli esillä perinteinen olkipukkikokoelma, tonttu-kylä ja tuikkulyhtytalojen rykelmä. Saunaan mentiin siinä viiden-kuuden aikaan ja sen jälkeen oli vuorossa jouluateria. Ruuan jälkeen jaettiin lahjat.  Aattona oli sentään pikkuisen pakkasta illalla ja komea kuutamo, mutta joulupäivän aamuna satoi vettä. Ei hirveän jouluista mulle.

Joulupäivänä söimme aamupalan ja ajelimme takaisin kaupunkiin laittamaan omaa jouluateriaamme. Ruuan valmistumista odotellessa katsottiin tv:stä kuningattaren puhe ja jaettiin loput lahjat. Taku-kissa tosin oli saanut ylisuuren lahjansa (parimetrinen second-hand raapimispuu) jo pari päivää ennen aattoa. Isäntä sai toivomansa blutooth-kuulokkeet puhelimeen, Dr Who-trivialpursuitin ja suklaata. Minä sain lahjakortin balettikauppaan (Äiti ihmetteli että onko sellaisiakin kauppoja, minä vastasin että joo, siellä myydään baletteja. Äiti kysyi että jaa, aiotko ostaa Pähkinänsärkijän vai Joutsenlammen? Meidän perheen huumoria…), Singstar-pelin, värityskirjoja ja superpainavan design-kirjan. Yhteiseksi lahjaksi saimme äidiltä petivaatteita, jotka tulevat kyllä aina tarpeeseen. Lahjojen avaamisen jälkeen ruoka olikin valmista. Loppu ilta sitten vaan syötiin liikaa ja katsottiin töllötintä. Englannissa joulupäivänä tulee perinteisesti monien tv-sarjojen jouluerikoisia. Meidän pakollisiin katsottaviin kuuluivat tietysti Dr Who:n ja Downton Abbeyn jouluerikoiset. Kuulostaa aika tylsältä näin auki kirjoitettuna, mutta meille se oli juuri riittävä määrä äksöniä.

Christmas went, really fast as it tends to do. On Christmas Eve we drove to the Country side. Day went past with familiar routine: first we had coffee with mum, then warmed the sauna and finished preparing the food. After several year’s break, mum had a proper Christmas tree again. Real tree is a bit of a bother (needles and all) so we haven’t had it every year. But there has always been the straw goat collection, elf village and group of tea light houses in the hallway. Then we went to sauna around five or six and had the meal afterwards. After a meal it was time to hand out gifts. Weather was atleast little nippy and there was quite pretty almost-full-moon on Christmas Eve. However on Christmas morning it was raining. Not very christmassy for me.

On Christmas morning we ate breakfast and drove back to town to make our own Christmas meal. While it was cooking, we watched Queen’s speech and handed out rest of the gifts. Even though Taku the cat already got her oversized gift couple days before Christmas Eve (couple meters tall second-hand scratching post). Hubby got the blutooth headset he wished for his phone, Dr Who Trivial Pursuit and chocolate. I got gift voucher for ballet shop (Mum was wondering if that kind of shop really exists, I said yes, they sell ballets. Mum asked am I going to buy Nutcracker or Swan lake? Our family humour…), Singstar game, colouring books and super heavy design book. And we both got from mum a set of bed linen, they are always needed. After opening lasts gifts food was ready. Rest of the evening we just ate too much and watched tv. In England it’s quite traditional that many tv series have specially made Christmas Specials. Our mandatory Christmas Specials were of course Dr Who and Downton Abbey. Sounds quite boring time when written down like this, but for us it was just perfect amount of action.
