En olekaan pitkiin aikoihin esitellyt teille mitään uusia hankintoja. Osittain tähän on ollut syynä etten ole hirveästi ostanut mitään, mikä sinänsä ei ole ollenkaan paha asia. Kirppiksiäkin on tullut kierrettyä varsin maltillisesti ja harkiten. On jotenkin rentouttavaa kun huomaa pystyvänsä vain katselemaan. Suosittelen lämpimästi!
Silti haaviin tarttuu aina joskus jotakin pientä. Tällä kertaa kerron teille muutamasta isohkosta mustasta lätkästä. Löysimme isännän kanssa tässä joitain päiviä sitten kirpputorilta ison kasan savikiekoiksi kutsuttuja vanhoja äänilevyjä. Savikiekot olivat käytössä ennen LP-levyjä. Niiden pyörimisnopeus on 78 kierrosta minuutissa joten niihin ei mahdu kovin paljon musiikkia, yleensä vain yksi kappale per puoli. Suurin osa löytämistämme levyistä oli ruotsinkielistä iskelmää josta en ole niin innostunut, mutta huomioni kiinnitti Vera Lynn’in Auf wiedersehn sweetheart vuodelta 1952. Tarinan mukaan Vera Lynn oli lomamatkalla Sveitsissä kun hän kuuli kappaletta laulettavan ja halusi äänittää sen englanniksi. Kappale on sikäli historiallinen että se oli ensimmäinen ulkomaisen artistin levytys joka nousi ykköseksi Yhdysvaltain Billboard-listalla.
Toinen levy jonka valitsimme on Donald Peersin levytys I told them all about you, vuodelta 1949 (hassua kyllä levyn etiketissä on kirjoitusvirhe “I told hem all about you”). Sen toiselta puolelta löytyy medleynä kappaleet Blue skies, There’s a rainbow round my shoulders ja If you were the only girl in the world. Blue skies on Irvin Berlinin sävellys, alunperin vuodelta 1927. Se on sikäli merkittävä kappale että se esitettiin ensimmäisessä varsinaisessa äänielokuvassa The Jazz Singer, sekin vuonna 1927. Tämän Donald Peersin lisäksi kappaleesta ovat tehneet omia versioitaan mm. Count Basie, Benny Goodman ja Willie Nelson.
Kolmannen levyn valitsin siksi että pidän Spike Jonesista. Jonesin satiiriset sovitukset tunnetuista kappaleista eivät sytytä kaikkia mutta minut ne saavat hymyilemään. Kappaleet on kyllästetty hassuilla kurkkuäänillä, pillinvihellyksillä, torventöräyksillä ja paukauksilla joskus jopa ärsyttävyyteen asti. Nappaamallamme levyllä ovat kappaleet Cocktails for two ja Chloe jotka ovat Jonesin suosituimpia levytyksiä All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth-kappaleen ohella. Nämä legendaariselle His Masters Voice-levymerkille tehdyt Spike Jones and his City Slickers-versiot ovat vuodelta 1944.
Tämä rahiseva lysti maksoi minulle kaksi euroa levyltä. Ebayta surffaamalla isäntä selvitti että Spike Jonesin levystä on maksettu noin 15 US dollaria ja Vera Lynnistä noin 13. Nämä levyt olivat siis edullisia löytöjä. Suomessa savikiekot maksavat kirppiksillä yleensä noin viitsen euroa. Aitoa gramofonia minulla ei ole (olen kyllä yrittänyt suostutella isäntää semmoista hankkimaan) mutta levysoittimestani löytyy nopeussäätö 78rpm:lle joten näidenkin kuuntelu onnistuu. Me myös testattiin levyt ja kaikki toimivat.

I haven’t shown you anything of my purchases lately. Mainly because I haven’t bought anything, which isn’t a bad thing actually. I’ve been very moderate on going to thrift shops and flea market. It is rather relaxing when I notice that I’m only able to look at things, not necessary buying. I warmly recommend!
But still every now and then I catch something. This time I will tell you about couple big black round flat things. Couple days ago me and my hubby found some old 78 vinyl records. These were in use before the LP-records and there was enough room only about one song because of the speed, 78 rounds per minute. Most of the records we found were swedish music, but what cauht my eye was Vera Lynn’s Auf wiedersehn sweetheart from 1952. According to the story, Vera Lynn was on holiday in Switzerland and heard people singing the song and wanted to record it in english. Song is historical because it was the first recording by foreign artist to make number one on US Billboard.
Second record we chose was Donald Peers recording I told them all about you from 1949 (funny enough, there is a typo on the record label “I told hem all about you”). On the reverse side you can find medley with songs Blue skies, There’s a rainbow round my shoulders and If you were the only girl in the world. Blue skies is by Irvin Berlin, originally recorded in 1927. It is also historical song because it was played in first talking movie, The Jazz Singer, that also in 1927. Besides this Donald Peers version, you can also find versions by Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Willie Nelson etc.
Third record I chose because I like Spike Jones. His satirical arrangements of famous songs don’t go for all, but they make me smile. Songs are filled with odd throat noices, honking horns, blowing whistles, bangs and that sort of elements, even up to being annoying. On this recording there are Jones’ version of Cocktails for two and Chloe, which are amongst Spike Jones and his City Slickers most popular recordings with All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth. These songs are recorded on the legendary His Masters Voice-lable in 1944.
This rasping fun cost us 2 € per record (about 2,5 USD or 1,6 Brittish Pounds). My hubby checked on Ebay that this Spike Lee record has been sold with about 15 US dollars and Vera Lynn’s with about 13. So ours were obviously bargins. In Finland these old 78s are usually around 5 €. I still don’t have real gramophone (I’ve tried to turn my hubbys head on getting one) but my record player has speed dial for 78 rpm so I can listen these. Btw, we tested and all these records work.
