Collecting things comes natural to humans. Most people collect or have been collecting something during their lives. Casey from Elegant Musings decided to arrange blog tour about cherished collections. I signed in even though I have made several posts about my collections. But one more post doesn’t hurt, does it. It was so difficult to decide so here is couple different collections in one go. You can read about other cherished collections from Casey’s blog, whole week.
All of my collections have started by accident. First you get one-two items and then suddenly you notice you got plenty. But it is rather fun. My main motto about collecting these things is that everything has to be reasonably prised. I don’t want to end up bankrupt because of it.

VALOKUVAT IHMISISTÄ & POLKUPYÖRISTÄ /
PHOTOS OF PEOPLE WITH CYCLES

Tällaisten valokuvien löytäminen on yllättävän vaikeaa.

Finding these kind of photos is surprisingly tricky. I have heard that “couple” other people also collect these. I got the idea when I was browsing my great great aunts photo albums. There was couple of these photos in there. I took them and framed for the wall. Then I started to systemathicly search more to make a wall collage. Now I have 14, two waiting to be framed. My great great aunt is also in the photos. She stands between her brothers under birch tree, with bikes.

HATUT / HATS

I have collected vintage hats (and new aswell) for years. It started when I inherited old hats from my grandmother. And then they started piling up. I have to admit that I think it got a bit out of my hands now. It is funny, because I seldom wear hats, except in winter when it is too cold. I like old hats the most, but I also get excited about little hair fascinators that are easy to make yourself, in any imaginable shape and size. I didn’t bother digging my furhats for this photo session, since they are now stored for the summer, but you can see them in this post. My most recent hat purchase, week ago, is this.

Baskerini (paitsi musta puuttuu koska en löytänyt sitä.) /

It’s the same thing with fabric gloves than with hats. I inherited some from my grandmother and after that they started gathering.  For some reason all of them seem to be white or cream or something like that. So now I’m looking for coloured gloves. Preferably pastell shades or black or bright red. My favourite gloves are faux leather decorated “driving gloves” I got from granny and crochet gloves.

Ajohanskat vasemmalla. / My driving gloves on the left.

PUUTERIRASIAT / POWDER CASES

Suurinta osaa rasioista en raaski käyttää koska niiden lukitusmekanismi on saattanut hieman vaurioitua vuosien saatossa.

I have collected powder cases rather long time now, but the amount is growing pretty slow (thankfully). First one I got was large and beautiful case with mother-of-pearl cover. Latest purchase is square case that I’m actually using. Most of the cases can’t be used because the lock mechanism has gone broken or unreliable. Some cases still have some old powder left. If someone got inpsired and wants to put old powder cases in use, I don’t recommend using the old powder but to replace it with new.

IRTOKAULUKSET / SEPARATE COLLARS

Separate collars are handy for accessorising. You can change the look of the dress by just adding separate collar or changing it to another one. Currently I am dreaming of beaded collar and one suitable for V neckline. I don’t remember which was my first, possibley the narrow one with a row of buttons. These are so rare to find, atleast here in Finland, that despite of years of collecting, I only have couple.

Solmittava silkkikaulus, käyttämätön pikkuröyhelö (kaupan etiketti kiinni),
1 virkattu, 1 nyplätty, 1 battenberg-pitsinen, 1 lasten pitsisomisteinen. /

Aika sööttiä toi pyörä+ihminen -valokuvien keräily! En saa oikein kiinni siitä, miks se on mun mielestä hillittömän hellyyttävää, mut se on!

    1. Rhia says:

superheidi – Thank you :D allthough I’m not so sure it’s a good thing to collect pretty much anything…

Oh my god!!! THE HATS! THE HATS! THE HATS!
I adore vintage hats but my head size is too big :D 59cm, so, I can’t find real vintage hat which would suit me well.
Now, I’ve just order one from ebay 1980s Laura Ashley hat made in 1930s or 1940s design, so I’m really looking forward to it.
I have just grey beret (but I like it as well;))

But you hat collection is just adorable. Omg, adorable. I haven’t words for it.

    And the gloves… powder cases…

all these tiny vintage things have their own souls and their own stories. I love your collections.

I will also participate in Casey’s project but I haven’t such nice and vintage collections. Oh, gal, you must be happy to have such beautiful things!

Oih…. Ihastuin noihin puuterirasioihin!!! Olen aina rakastanut tuon tyylisiä ja varmaan samaan kastiin kuuluu vanhat hajuvesipullot. Mistä vanhoja ja nättejä puuterirasioita kannattaisi lähteä bongaamaan jos en yleensä käy hirveästi tapahtumissa yms… Varsinkin tuo pieni pyöreä hopeinen on aivan jumalainen!!!

    1. Rhia says:

Sara – niitä on helppo keräillä koska niitä on niin paljon tarjolla :D paitsi niitä irtokauluksia sais olla enemmän. Sinäkin voisit tehdä postauksen omistasi.

Blanka – Did you knew it is possible to adjust the hat size? If hat is made of felt, you can either steam it yourself or take it to the professional for steaming. Stretching and steaming the circumference (where the petersham ribbon usually is inside) quite often helps. Petersham has to come out first, of course.
And for example, that ivory summer hat with loads of embellishment, I have enlargened myself just by replacing the petersham ribbon with longer one. That hat is made of straw or similar stuff by weaving and is easy to stretch. Besides, many 40’s and 50’s hats were meant to be worn only on the crown of your head, they are not suppose to fit at all. They were just pressed on top and attatched with pins, like my triangular black hat with wide ribbon on last hat photo (on the left, above beige hat).
So don’t disgard vintage hats automatically, atleast try them on and if it fits just about it is quite possibly easy to alter. But then again, thankfully it is also possible to get repro vintage style hats. That black cloche hat with pink ribbon and feathers is actually H&M hat that I just revamped. It was 90’s style wide brim hat. I cut the brim narrower and added all the embellishments and tadah, now it’s 20’s style.

I am happy of all my stuff, but then again, I have used loads of time and effort on it. It didn’t happen overnight :D Years of thrifting only makes it happen.

Maria – Vanhat puuterirasiat on tosiaan kauniita.

    1. Rhia says:

elina – No nythän mä sitten tiedän minne ne kaikki katoaa :D Onko sillä jo isokin kokoelma?

  7. Those hats are amazing. I especially love the cloches. I collect gloves too. I rarely wear the white pairs though, because I am afraid they will get dirty.

    1. Rhia says:

Camelia – thank you :) most of my gloves got stains on them already (from previous owners and they don’t come off) so I don’t mind wearing them. Mosty I wear the crochet gloves, but now they also need repairing since there is a hole in one finger.

  8. Corinne says:

Your collections are wonderful. Shame you don’t wear hats, you could go for quite a while without a repeat! The compacts are stunning as well. Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Rhia says:

Corinne – Thank you :D I do wear hats occasionally, but not as much as I could. During summer time I find hats too warm most of the time, or they don’t fit with my hairdo. But I am trying to wear them more, especially now when I’m more into vintage than ever before. And I have to admit, when everything feels cold and crap, putting on warming and cosy beret makes everything seem little bit better :D Thanks for visiting!

  9. Laurie says:

How special to have such special items passed on to your from your grandmother!
    Laurie…visiting from the blog tour

  10. Peggy says:

I ♥ the cloche collection! I have 2 hats in that style and somehow I feel very modern when I wear them!

The powder case collection reminded me of the one my boss carries. Her grandfather gave it to her grandmother and it was a very special compact that only those who were members of a certain club could purchase. Today Katie carries it in her purse as a reminder of what her grandparents did for her.

  11. You have such beautiful collections! I’m particularly enamored with your collection of hats. I rarely wear a hat, but I love imagining myself in old vintage hats. They lend a kind of romance to just about any outfit.

    1. Rhia says:

Laurie – I got so many nice things from my grandmother, my car for example ;) but the things that I cherise the most are probably great great aunt’s photo albums. She moved to Canada from Finland when she was young and married german husband there. They never had children but based on the photos they seemed to have lots of friends and good, happy life. She moved back to Finland at her old age, I was very young then and I barely remember her. Somehow she feels like kindred spirit to me and my most precious things are items that belonged to her.

Peggy – Yes, somehow cloches feel very modern aswell. It’s kind of strange, isn’t it.
Sometimes I think about the previous owners of these powder compacts. I wonder what kind of persons they were, what were their lifes like, and so on. Sounds like your boss has a very special powder case :)

Michelle – Thank you! You nailed it perfectly, adding some romance, that’s what the vintage hats do. I also have several hats that I didn’t photograph because I could not find them, for example one little cocktail hat from 50’s with feathers and leaf shaped sequins. It is in bad shape and desperately needs repairing, I don’t know where I have put it.

  12. Renee says:

very interesting collections. I love the lace collars.

    1. Rhia says:

Renee – thank you! Lace collars are so beautifull, aren’t they. One that I have been coveting for ages is victorian tulle lace collar. Very rare to find and very expensive. I saw some of them once in vintage fair, but they were way too expensive for me at that time.

  13. Mortira says:

Wow! These collections are beautiful. I really love the powder cases. It’s easy to see how that mother of pearl one could inspire a collection. Gorgeous!

    1. Rhia says:

Mortira – Thank you :) mother of pearl is easy material to like, so versatile and pretty. I went to check your Egypt-collection, what an inspiring post it was. Lovely items!
