Keittiömme peränurkassa on vähän ongelmallinen kohta. Tai, no siis, koko keittiö on vähän ongelmallinen, mutta nyt puhun yhdestä tietystä osasta. Nimittäin sivuovesta. Sivuovi johtaa kuistin toisella sivulla olevalle katetulle tasanteelle jossa on portaat pihaan. Tasanne näkyy mm. tässä postauksessa. Sivuovi on tuollainen vanhaa tuoreempi keskinkertainen, falskaava ikkunallinen ovi jonka haluaisin vaihtaa. Ovella on myös pieni tuulikaappi joka on talvella todella kylmä. Pääasiassa tätä ovea käytetään vain hätätapauksessa ja talvella ei oikeastaan koskaan, sillä tuulikaapista huolimatta vaarana on kissojen livahtaminen ulos. Tasanteelle on aikanaan tulossa jonkinlainen catio, eli verkotettu kissojen oleskelu-alue jossa kissat voivat turvallisesti oleilla ulkoilmassa, mutta se projekti on vähän jäänyt muiden tärkeämpien hommien jalkohin.

Luulin jakaneeni tästä nurkasta blogiinkin aiemmin kuvia, mutta en oikein löytänyt mitään kovin hyviä. Nurkka näkyy aiemmassa, edellisen omistajan aikaisessa kuosissaan tässä postauksessa. Oven yläpuolella, tapettikerrosten alla on vanhanaikainen seinän sisään rakennettu komero, joka tuskin on eristetty, eli sekin varmasti kylmentää huonetta. Ihan hiukan uteloittaisi tehdä tapettiin reikä ja katsoa onko kaapissa aarteita, mutta toisaalta ei yhtään tee mieli löytää mitään hiiriyllätystä sieltä. Maalasin ruman mäntyoven joskus vuosi-pari sitten uusien keittiökaappien sävyiseksi ja seinät valkoiseksi. Muiden projektien ollessa päällä takaovea emme ala nyt ihan vielä vaihtamaan, joten pitää keksiä muita keinoja vedon vähentämiseksi. Todellisuudessa kunnollinen vedonpoisto vaatinee lattian avaamisen ja tuulensuojan ja eristeen korjaamisen, mutta nyt tällaisena pikafiksinä ripustin oven eteen kirppikseltä löytämäni kauniin raanun. Valitettavasti raanun päät oli kudottu hiukan huolimattomasti. Kudetta ei ollut lyöty riittävän tiukkaan, siksi päät olivat alkaneet purkautua. Kiristin kuteita vähän käsin jolloin kuvio hiukan tasaantui, mutta kyllä siinä vielä mutkia näkyy. Ompelin sekä ylä, että alapäähän jatkopalat sillä sellaisenaan raanu oli liian lyhyt. Täytyisi vielä ommella ainakin toiseen reunaan pieni jatkopala jotta se peittäisi oven kunnolla. Koska minulla on melko vähän vedonpoistajia, ajattelin myös hyödyntää tänä talvena pesua odottavat matot joita en ehtinyt kesällä pesemään. Pinosin kaksi mattoa raanun helman päälle. Ne sekä pitävät raanun paikoillaan, estävät kissojen renkkumisen raanun reunoissa että blokkaavat vetoa. Todellinen tulikoe on vielä edessä kunnes kunnon tulipalopakkaset saapuvat, mutta jo nyt keittiö tuntuu miellyttävämmältä oleskella.

Tämä nurkka on muutenkin vähän semmoinen dumpster-fire ettei mitään rajaa. Tästä on aikoinaan edellisen omistajan toimesta tukittu kulkureitti etu-eteiseen ja sen paikalla on nyt suihku. Sen puolelta pinnat ovat toki viimeistellyt, mutta täällä keittiön puolella ei. Kipsilevyn saumoja ei ole saumattu, vesiputkien läpivientejä ei ole siistitty ja niiden paikkakin on vähän pöljä, keskellä seinää. Seinän alaosassa kipsilevy on ottanut vähän osumaa ja kurttaantunut. Seinällä katossa olleen vanhan vesivaraajan telinettä ei ole irrotettu. Puhumattakaan tuosta elefantista huoneessa, eli jättimäisestä lämminvesivaraajasta, johon melkein lyö otsansa tullessaan ovesta sisään. No, kuuma vesi ei meiltä lopu kesken, mutta kaksi aikuista pärjäisi vähän vähemmälläkin. Seinien maalaaminen valkoiseksi raikasti tilaa hiukan, mutta tuo nurkka on on silti ruma ja epäkäytännöllinen, mutta en oikein tiedä mitä sen kanssa pitäisi tehdä. Ideoita otetaan vastaan. Kuumavesivaraajan siirtäminen muualle ei valitettavasti ole mahdollista, sillä muualla ei ole tilaa.

There is a bit of a problem in the back corner of our kitchen. Well, actually, the whole kitchen is a bit of a problem, but right now I’m talking about one specific part. Namely, the side door. The side door leads to a covered landing on the other side of the porch, where there are stairs to the yard. The landing can be seen in this post, for example. The side door is an old, mediocre, drafty door with a window that I would like to replace. The door also has a small vestibule that gets really cold in winter. This door is mainly used only in emergencies and actually not at all in winter, because despite the vestibule, there is a risk of the cats slipping out. At some point, we plan to build a catio on the landing, which is a netted area where cats can safely enjoy the outdoors, but that project has been put on hold due to other more important tasks.

I thought I had shared pictures of this corner on my blog before, but I couldn’t really find any good ones. The corner can be seen in its previous state, during the previous ownersip, in this post. Above the door, under the layers of wallpaper, there is an old-fashioned built-in closet, which is probably not insulated, so it certainly makes the room colder. I’m a little tempted to make a hole in the wallpaper and see if there are any treasures in the closet, but on the other hand, I don’t really want to find any mouse surprise in there. A couple of years ago, I painted the ugly pine door to match the new kitchen cabinets and painted the walls white. With other projects underway, we’re not going to replace the back door just yet, so we’ll have to find other ways to reduce the draft. In reality, proper draft elimination would require opening up the floor and repairing the wind barrier and insulation, but as a quick fix, I hung a beautiful wall hanging, which I found at a flea market. Unfortunately, the ends of the curtain were woven a little carelessly. The weave wasn’t tight enough, so the ends had started to unravel. I tightened the weave a little by hand, which evened out the pattern a bit, but you can still see some unevenness. I sewed extensions to both the top and bottom ends because the rug was too short as it was. I still need to sew a small extension piece to at least one edge so that it covers the door properly. Since I have relatively few draft stoppers, I also thought I would make use of the rugs that are waiting to be washed, which I didn’t have time to wash in the summer.

This corner is a bit of a dumpster fire anyway. The previous owner blocked off the passageway to the front hall, and now there is a shower in its place. The surfaces on that side have been finished, of course, but not on the kitchen side. The plasterboard joints have not been sealed, the water pipe penetrations have not been finished up, and their location is a bit awkward, in the middle of the wall. At the bottom of the wall, the plasterboard has taken a bit of a hit and is cracked. The old water heater rack on the wall has not been removed. Not to mention the elephant in the room, i.e., the giant emersion heater, which you almost bump your head on when coming in through the door. Well, we won’t run out of hot water, but two adults could get by with a little less. Painting the walls white freshened up the space a bit, but that corner is still ugly and impractical, and I’m not really sure what to do with it. Ideas are welcome. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to move the water heater elsewhere, as there’s no space for it anywhere else.
