Olen vuosia sitten tehnyt tuollaisen silkkipukuisen jouluenkelin, joka kaivetaan esiin varastosta joka joulu. En silloin aikanaan keksinyt enkelille oikein mitään nättejä siipiä, joten leikkasin ne hätäisesti kullanvärisestä harsokankaasta. Siivet alkavat olla jo melko elähtäneet, joten oli aika päivittää ne. Kaivelin varastosta vuosia hilloamani kuparilangat ja virittelin nypläystyynyn valmiiksi.
Vaikka metallilangan nyplääminen ei olekaan sieltä helpoimmasta päästä, nämä siivet valmistuivat melko nopeasti parissa viikossa iltapuhteina. Virheitä niissä takuulla on enemmän kuin tarpeeksi, mutta onneksi metallilangan luontaiset ominaisuudet häivyttävät virheet lähes täysin. Mynsteri on oikeastaan kokonainen enkeli, mutta sovelsin sitä hiukan. Jätin välistä pois enkelin vartalon ja nypläsin pelkät siivet. Ja tuli erinomaiset, vaikka itse sanonkin. Nyt enkeli jaksaa vähintään toiset 20 vuotta.
Samalla kun irrotin vanhat virttyneet siivet, päätin hiukan fiksata itse enkeliäkin. Puvun pääntie oli nimittäin alunperinkin vähän suuri ja se tahtoi valua posliinisen rintakuvan päältä paljastaen kangassuikaleista ja pehmusteesta tehdyn olkapään. Lisäsin pääntielle vähän fyllinkiä ettei pääntie valuisi vaan pysyisi hyvin paikoillaan. Siipien lisäksi lisäsin taakse kiinnityskohdan peittävän rusetin sekä vyötärölle vyön rusetin kankaasta. Joulu saa tulla.
Years ago, I made a Christmas angel with silk gown, that we dig out of storage every Christmas. At the time, I couldn’t think of any pretty wings for the angel, so I hastily cut some out of gold-colored crafting fibermesh. The wings are starting to look quite worn, so it was time to update them. I dug out some copper wire that I had been saving for years and got my bobbin lace pillow ready.
Even though metal wire bobbin lace isn’t the easiest thing to do, these wings were completed fairly quickly in a couple of weeks. There are definitely more than enough mistakes in them, but luckily the natural properties of metal wire hide the mistakes almost completely. Pattern is actually a complete angel, but I adapted it a little. I left out the angel’s body and did only the wings. And they turned out great, even if I do say so myself. Now the angel will last at least another 20 years.
While removing the old, worn wings, I decided to fix the angel itself a little. The neckline of the dress was a little too large to begin with, and it tended to slip off the porcelain bust, exposing the shoulder made of fabric strips and padding. I added a little padding to the neckline so that it would stay in place and not slip. In addition to the wings, I also added a bow to cover the attachment point at the back and a fabric belt to the waist. Christmas can come now.

Wings have lost the sturdyness and partially already ripped off too.
Pattern for angel wings was found in one of my bobbin lace teachers books, but unfortunately I didn’t write down the book name. I enlarged the pattern little bit and only made the wings, not the whole angel.
I took the whole dress off. Here you can see how there is kind of step where the porcellain neckline meets the body. That area was showing through the bodice of the dress. I added some padding there around the whole bust, but I didn’t take any photos of it. Under the padded skirt is wire frame.
I took in of the neckline at the back slightly. Then I attached the wings, sewing by hand, on the back of the dress.
Ontop of the area where wings are sewn on, I made large bow from different silk. I could not find the original light blue silk. Perhaps there isn’t any left anymore.
I also added a silk belt, tied the golden thread back and made small halo from copper wire. Now my angel finally has, after a very long wait, a proper pair of wings.
Tuo nypläys on mystistä hommaa, tekisi mieli joskus sitä(kin) kokeilla. Uudet siivet ovat sopusuhtaiset ja varmasti kestävät. Nyt lanka vielä kiiltää, mutta mahtaako ajan saatossa patinoitua kuparille ominaiseen tyyliin…?
Hehkuvainen – Voin lämpimästi suositella. Se on vähän sellaista aivoja nollaavaa hommaa kun siihen pitää keskittyä niin kovasti. En usko että tämä kuparilanka ainakaan patinoituu kovin nopeasti. Tämä lanka on ollut minulla melko suojaamattomana luultavasti lähes yhtä kauan kuin tuo enkeli, eikä se ole vielä yhtään patiointunut. Toki ei sitä ole hypisteltykään, vaan on ollut laatikossa muiden metallilankojen kanssa säilössä. Luulen kuitenkin että tässä saattaa olla joku lakkaus päällä joka pitää sen kiiltävänä. On tietysti mahdollista ettei tämä ole oikeaa kuparilankaa ensinkään vaan jotain maalattua askartelulankaa, mutta kovasti on aidon kuparin väristä. On vain niin ohutta että en oikein katkaisukohdasta näe onko sisältäkin saman väristä.
