Olen pidempään jo suunnitellut tekeväni puutarhaesiliinan. Kun en käytä juurikaan housuja ja puutarhahommat hoituu pääasin hameessa/mekossa, niin olen kaivannut esiliinaa, joka suojaisi suurimmaksi osaksi helman etuosan likaantumiselta. Meinasin käyttää tähän pellavamekosta jäänyttä harmaata pellavaa, mutta se tulikin lähes kokonaan käytetyksi pellavaiseen alushameeseen.

Onneksi kuitenkaan tästä taloudesta eivät kankaat lopu kesken. Ja lisää tuntuu tulevan välillä ovista ja ikkunoista. No ei sentään, mutta kun kohdalle osuus sopiva (vintage)löytö niin en jätä sitä hankkimatta. Taannoin käymästäni asunnon tyhjennysmyynnistä löysin tämän (puoli?)pellavaisen lakanan. Se vaikuttaa olevan täysin käyttämätön, lienee tehty kapioiksi, mutta ehkä karkeutensa vuoksi jäänyt käyttämättä. Kangas saattaa olla käsin kudottu, mutta en mene vannomaan. Päistäreitä siinä kuitenkin on sen verran että aika krouvia materiaalia. Ajattelin että tämäpä se olis juuri sopivaa materiaalia puutarhaessuun. Ja ei kun tuumasta toimeen.

Varsinaista kaavaa tähän ei ole, mutta kaikki kappaleet ovat joko suorakaiteen tai neliön muotoisia:
1 etuosa, koko kankaan leveys n. 75×150 cm
1miehustapala, n. 30×30 cm
2vyötärökaitaletta n 6×60 cm
1 olkain (yhtenäinen) n. 6x 100 cm
2 solmimisnauhat n. 6×60 cm
1 tasku n. 15×20 cm

Mittoja voi soveltaa omiin mittoihin ja tarpeen mukaan poistamalla tai lisäämällä leveyteen ja pituuteen. Lakana oli ommeltu kahdesta kapeasta kangaspalasta joten keskellä on sauma. Käytin tätä ja muita lakanan ominaisuuksia hyödyksi ja valmiin leveän päärmeen käytin sellaisenaan helmaan ja valmiin kapean päärmeen käytin miehustan yläreunaan ja taskunsuuhun.

1. Ompele helman, miehustan, solmimisnauhojen ja olkainten reunoihin päärmeet.
2. Laskosta helman yläreuna ja neulaa se vyötärökaitaleeseen että helma tulee kahden vyötärökaitaleen väliin. Huomioi että vyötärökaitaleen ja helman keskikohdat tulevat vastakkain. Käännä vyötärökaitale niin että saumanvarat jäävät sisään ja silitä sauma sekä helman laskokset.
3. Neulaa miehustakappale vyötärökaitaleen yläreunaan oikeat puolet vastakkain, mutta vain toiseen vyötärökaitaleeseen ja ompele.
4. Taita vyötärökaitaleiden saumanvarat nurjalle ja neulaa ne paikoilleen tarkasti vastaamaan toisiaan. Miehustapalan saumanvarat jäävät niiden väliin piiloon. Neulaa solmimisnauhat kaitaleen päiden sisään.
5. Tikkaa kappaleet päältä yhteen alkaen päästä niin että solmimisnauha kiinnittyy samalla ja lopeta ommel kaitaleen toisessa päässä samalla tavoin niin että solmimisnauha kiinnittyy.
6. Neulaa olkain miehustan yläreunaan niin että toinen pää tulee vasempaan reunaan ja toinen pää oikeaan. Olkain muodostaa ison lenkin. Solmimisnauhat pujotetaan selässä olkainnauhan läpi, jolloin ne pitävät olkaimet paikoillaan. Tarkista että olkain on riittävän napakka ja lyhennä tarvittaessa.
7. Taita taskun saumanvarat nurjalle ja silitä ne paikoilleen. Neulaa tasku haluttuun kohtaan ja tikkaa se päältä paikoilleen.

Essusta tuli tosi hauska ja kangas antaa uutuuttaan melko muhkean ilmeen. Tosin solmimisnauhat tuntuvat hirmu jäykiltä. Saatan joutua vaihtamaan ne pehmeämpiin, helpommin solmittaviin kaitaleisiin, vaikka kangas kyllä käytössä jonkin verran pehmenee. Lakanan nimikointi muodostaa hauskan koristeen helmaan, vaikka se onkin ylösalaisin, mutta en anna sen häiritä.

I’ve been planning to make a gardening apron for quite some time now. Since I rarely wear pants and do most of my gardening in a skirt or dress, I’ve been wanting an apron that would protect most of the front of my skirt from getting dirty. I was going to use the leftover gray linen from a linen dress for this, but I ended up using almost all of it for a linen petticoat.

Fortunately, though, we’re not running out of fabric in this household. And it seems that more keeps coming in through the doors and windows. Well, not literally, but when I come across a suitable (vintage) find, I can’t resist picking it up. At a house clearance sale I visited recently, I found this (half?) linen sheet. It appears to be completely unused; it was probably made for bridal trousseau, but perhaps never used because of it’s rough texture. The fabric might be hand-woven, but I wouldn’t swear to it. There are some hard splinter-like shives, leftovers from turning flax into yarn, so it feels quite a rugged material. I thought this would be just the right material for a garden apron. And so, I put my plan into action.

There is no specific pattern for this, but all the pieces are either rectangular or square:
1 front piece, approx. 75 x 150 cm (full width of the fabric)
1 bodice piece, approx. 30 x 30 cm
2 waistband pieces, approx. 6 x 60 cm
1 shoulder strap (in one piece), approx. 6×100 cm
2 tie straps, approx. 6×60 cm
1 pocket, approx. 15×20 cm

You can adjust the measurements to fit your own dimensions by adding or subtracting from the width and length as needed. The sheet was sewn from two narrow pieces of fabric, so there is a seam in the middle. I took advantage of this and other features of the sheet: I used the finished wide hem as-is for the hem of the apron, and I used the finished narrow hem for the top edge of the bodice and the pocket opening.

1. Sew hemstitch along the edges of the hem, bodice, tie strings, and shoulder straps.
2. Gather the top edge of the hem and pin it to the waistband so that the hem lies between the two waistband pieces. Make sure the center points of the waistband and the hem line up. After stitching, turn the waistband so that the seam allowances are on the inside, and press the seam and the gathers in the hem.
3. Pin the bodice piece to the top edge of the waistband with right sides together, but only to one of the waistbands, and sew.
4. Fold the seam allowances of the waistband pieces to the inside and pin them in place precisely so they match up. The seam allowances of the bodice piece will be hidden between them. Pin the waist ties inside the ends of the waistband.
5. Topstitch the waistband pieces together, starting at one end so that the tie strap is secured at the same time, and finish the stitch at the other end of the waistband in the same way so that the tie is secured.
6. Pin the shoulder strap to the top edge of the bodice so that one end is on the left side and the other on the right. The shoulder strap forms a large loop. Thread the waist ties through the shoulder strap at the back, which will hold the straps in place. Check that the shoulder strap is tight enough and shorten it if necessary.
7. Fold the pocket seam allowances to the wrong side and press them in place. Pin the pocket to the desired location and topstitch in place.

The sheet turned out really cute, and the fabric has a pretty full look because it’s new. That said, the ties feel really stiff. I might have to replace them with softer, easier-to-tie strips, even though the fabric does soften up a bit with use. The monogram on the sheet makes for a fun decoration on the hem, even though it’s upside down, but I’m not going to let that bother me.
