Omavaraistelijoissa kertoillaan tänä vuonna pääasiassa omasta edistymisestä ja suunnitelmista. Omavaraisia luotsaa Tsajujen Sari. Käykää lukemassa myös muiden bloggarien jutut, joihin linkit löytyvät tästä alta. Ollaan jo huhtikuussa enkä ole paljon rikkaa lyönyt ristiin keväthommien eteen. Kevät on aina kiireistä aikaa myös muiden harrasteiden parissa ja taisin ottaa opiskelujen lisäksi vähän liian paljon kursseja. En ole siis ehtinyt edes kylvää mitään vielä. Pitkäperjantaina oli pitkästä aikaa sellainen päivä että jaksoi ja ehti ajatella pihahommia. Vielä on mielestäni liian kylmää kukkapenkkien mylläykseen, joten aloittelin pensaiden karsimisella.

Talon takanurkalla on risukko jossa rusopajuangervo ja koivuangervo ovat päässeet valtaamaan alaa hoidon puutteessa. Olen karsinut tätä aluetta vuosittain melko rajusti. Alussa puskat peittivät lähes koko kulkuväylän sakokaivojen vierestä talon taakse ja alkoivat jo hieman tukahduttaa mustaherukkapensasta. Rusopajuangervo on melko perkeleellinen kasvi ja se onkin vaarassa joutua haitallisten vieraslajien listalle, valkopajuangervohan listalta jo löytyy. Edellisessä rivitalopihassa oli aiemman asukkaan istuttama rusopajuangervo ja sitä oli jo naapureidenkin toimesta yritetty hävittää. Se leviää melko voimakkaasti juuriversojen avulla ja kasvaa hyvin nopeasti yhdessä kesässä korkeaksi, isoksi puskaksi. Sen voi siis leikata keväällä tai syksyllä maata myöden ja seuraavaan syksyyn mennessä se on kasvanut täyteen mittaansa. Sillä on sitkeä sormenvahvuinen juuristo, joka kulkee noin 10-15 cm syvyydessä ja siitä alaspäin. Rivitalopihalla kun yritin kaivaa istutuskuoppia mm. marjapensaille, tuon inhan kasvin juuristo esti kaivuun tehokkaasti joka puolella pihaa, siis jopa noin viiden metrin päässä itse kasvista. Täällä Havumäessä yritän karsia rusopajuangervoa vähintään pari kertaa kesässä jotta saan sen vähitellen taantumaan. Koivuangervo ei ole ihan yhtä paha, mutta kyllä sekin rauhassa levitessään muodostaa pusikoituvia alueita ja kauniiden lehtiensä ja näyttävän, tosin lyhyen kukintansa vuoksi sitä ilmeisesti on täälläkin levitelty vähän joka puolelle, pihatien varteen, liiterin seinustalle, talon taakse.
Toinen varhaiskevään puuhani on mikäs muu kuin orapihlajan leikkaus. Isäntä inhoaa koko kasvia, mutta minä en suostu siitä luopumaan. Myös linnut pitävät siitä. Niinpä yritän pitää isännän tyytyväisenä leikkaamalla orapihlajaa säännöllisesti. Säännöllinen leikkaus pitää orapihlajan tiiviinä ja siistinä aidanteena, mutta kukinta jää silloin välistä koska kukat tulevat vain vanhempiin oksiin. Niinpä meillä onkin talon takana pätkä orapihlaja-aitaa jota leikataan vain silloin kun oksat alkavat ulottua liian pitkälle nurmikon päälle. Tähän osaan aidanteesta tulee kukkia ja syksyllä myös marjoja linnuille. Tosin viime vuosi oli niin karu että edes orapihlajaan ei kovin montaa marjaa tullut.
Siinäpä ne tähän mennessä tehdyt kevätpuuhat. Toivon että saan huhtikuun aikana myös aikaiseksi siivota taimikasvatusalueen itselleni jotta saan kylvettyä hiukan esikasvatettavia juttuja. Mikäli kelit pysyvät melko lämpiminä tästä eteenpäin, haluan kylvää myös salaattia avomaalle. Haluaisin nimittäin pitkästä aikaa saada lemppariani, tummaa tammenlehväsaalaattia. Sitä ei jostain syystä paikallisista kaupoista ole löytynyt pitkiin aikoihin. Ja kuten aina, toivon että tänä kesänä minulla on enemmän energiaa hyötypuutarhan laittoon, se on ollut vähän hunningolla pari vuotta. Hienoista lupausta on ollut ilmassa energiatasojen noususta, mutta ei nuolaista ennenkuin tipahtaa ja mennään päivä ja viikko kerrallaan. Kevään harrastukset ja opiskelut jäävät pian tauolle, joten huhtikuun jälkeen on taas paremmin aikaakin talon ja puutarhan ylläpitoon. Peukut pystyyn!

Feel free to read all the other blogs too, links below, even though they are in Finnish. It’s already April, and I haven’t really gotten around to doing much spring work yet. Spring is always a busy time with my other hobbies as well, and I think I signed up for a few too many courses on top of my studies. So I haven’t even had time to plant anything yet. Good Friday was the first day in a long time when I had the energy and time to think about yard work. I still think it’s too cold to start digging up the flower beds, so I started by cutting down the shrubs.

In the back corner of the house, there is a thicket where meadowsweet spiraea x billiardii and some sort of white spirea have taken over due to a lack of care. I have cut this area quite aggressively every year. At first, the bushes covered almost the entire path from the septic tanks to the back of the house and were starting to suffocate the blackcurrant bush. Red meadowsweet is a pretty pesky plant, and it’s actually in danger of being added to the list of harmful invasive species here in Finland —white meadowsweet, spiraea salicifolia, is already on the list. In the previous row house yard, there was a red meadowsweet planted by the former resident, and the neighbors had already tried to get rid of it. It spreads quite vigorously via root and grows very quickly into a tall, large bush in a single summer. So you can cut it down to the ground in the spring or fall, and by the following fall it has grown back to its full size. It has a tough, finger-thick root system that runs about 10–15 cm deep and extends downward from there. In the yard of a row house, when I tried to dig planting holes for berry bushes, among other things, the root system of that plant effectively prevented digging all over the yard—even up to about five meters away from the plant itself. Here in Havumäki, I try to cut it at least a couple of times a summer to gradually get it to retreat. The white spirea isn’t quite as bad, but as it spreads slowly, it does form bushy areas, and because of it’s beautiful leaves and striking—albeit short—bloom, it has apparently been planted here and there, along the driveway, by the shed wall and behind the house.
Another of my early spring tasks is none other than pruning the hawthorn. My husband hates the whole plant, but I refuse to give it up. The birds like it, too. So I try to keep my husband happy by cutting the hawthorn regularly. Regular cutting keeps the hawthorn compact and neat as a hedge, but it means we miss out on the blooms because the flowers only appear on older branches. So, we have a short section of hawthorn hedge behind the house that we only cut when the branches start to extend too far over the lawn. This part of the hedge produces flowers and, in the fall, berries for the birds. However, last year was so harsh that even the hawthorn didn’t produce very many berries.
So, those are the spring chores I’ve done so far. I hope I’ll also manage to clear out a seedling-growing area for myself in April so I can sow some things for my kitchen garden. If the weather stays fairly warm from here on, I’d also like to sow some lettuce in the grow boxes. I’d really like to grow my favorite, dark oak leaf lettuce. For some reason, I haven’t been able to find it in local stores for quite a while. And as always, I hope that this summer I have more energy to take care of the kitchen garden, I have been neglecting it for couple of years. There has been a promise in the air about better energy levels, but let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. I have to take it day by day, week by week. My spring hobbies and studies will go on a break after april, so then I should have more time for caring the garden and the house. Fingers crossed!
Edge of the green moss, starting from the left bottom corner, towards the wheelbarrow, shows pretty accurately where the bushes used to grow. Arching branches reached all the way to the septic tanks. blocking the way. On the left of wheelbarros, at the back is old blackcurrant. I have ripped out several wheelbarrow loads of roots and branches. There is still more to go.
High bushes on the right and left are hawthorn. On the right edge is the forementioned blackcurrant. In the front on the left side is the red meadowsweet and in the middle is white spirea. I assume there might have been some sort of passage here before, base on the fact that the stone wall, which is behind the hawthorn on the right ends approximately here, and there has been sort of a barn under the hill on the right side. Atleast some pictures show a building around there. This area would make lovely hideout seating area, the afternoon sun hits the spot quite nicely.
Here it goes again. I have misplaced my small garden shears again, so cutting the small branches will have to wait for another day. It takes 2-3 days to cut the whole hedge, but it’s actually quite fun thing to do.
I also went on my annual treasure hunting trip to the corner of the field behind our land. This time I found spoon, handle for a jug and some porcellain and glass shards. I believe the farmer also appreciates that I clean the old rubbish dump, current field. I should also go there with proper bag to collect all the plastic rubbish. I couldn’t fit them in my hands this time.
Olet ehkä ainoa tuntemani ihminen jonka mielestä orapihlajan leikkaus voi olla kivaa. XD Kaverin kanssa on todettu että se on sellainen puutarhan asbesti. Mutta onhan silläkin tosiaan paikkansa, varsinkin tiiviinä ja hoidettuna aidanteena. Pitää jänekset ja kauriit kurissa, ja pikkulinnuille tosiaan mitä parhainta suojaa.
Hehkuvainen eeiii, ei orapihlajaa voi verrata asbestiin XD myönnän, se on työtä ja vaivaa vaativa aidanne, mutta niin moni muukin puutarhan kasvi. Omasta mielestäni orapihlajasta on paljon vähemmän vaivaa kuin vaikka daalioista jotka pitää joka syksy kaivaa ylös, talvettaa ja taas keväällä uudelleen istuttaa. Ihmiset monesti vain hakee tylsiltä, käytännöllisiltä aidanteilta helppoutta ja vaivaa ollaan halukkaita näkemään vain kukkivien silmäterien eteen. No jokainen tietty valitsee omat suosikit, mutta itse olen intohimoinen orapihlajan puolestapuhuja ja sen vastustajilla on vain asennoitumisongelma ;) tarkoitan että orapihlaja on ongelma vain jos siihen sillä tavalla asennoituu. Mikään huoltovapaa aidanne se ei ole, mutta ei puutarhassa moni muukaan ole huoltovapaata.
