Olen siirtynyt kultaiselle kaudelle. Arvasin että näin tulisi käymään, kun antaa pikkusormen niin koko käsi menee. Kirjansidontakurssilla on sellainen laite jota kutsun nimellä “kultauskone”. Sillä olen muutamia kertoja kullannut kirjankansia erilaisin kirjasimin. Se on hidasta, pikkutarkkaa puuhaa, eikä sitä voi tehdä kotona. Mutta opettajamme kertoikin toisenlaisesta kultausmenetelmästä ja se olikin sitten menoa. Kultauskone käyttää lämpöä kullan siirtämiseen kirjankanteen tai nahkaan. Kultafoliota voi kuitenkin kiinnittää ihan liimalla, ilman lämpöä. Lopputulos on rouheampi, eikä mitenkään tarkkareunainen. Se kuitenkin soveltuu käsin tehtyihin muistikirjoihin ja muuhun rustiikkisempaan puuhaan.

Näitä kullattuja muistikirjoja onkin syntynyt jo muutama. Sidonta on helppo ja melko nopea valmistaa ja siihen voi hyödyntää vanhoja kauniita kirjankansia. Löysin joskus vuosia sitten kirppikseltä kirjan, jossa oli todella epätavallisen upeat kannet, mutta turkasen kirppismyyjä oli kiinnittänyt tarrahintalapun kanteen. Irrotettaessa se tietenkin repi hauraan vanhan paperin rikki. Ja hintalappu oli ehtinyt olla kannessa kahdesti, päätellen siitä että kannessa oli jo ennestään yksi repeämä. Mutta eipä hätiä mitiä, paikkasin sen kultafoliolla. Tämä oli siis eräänlaista kirjansidontakintsugia.

Näistä kullanhohtoisista muistikirjoista tuli niin upeita että nyt haluaisin liimailla kultafoliota joka paikkaan. Mitähän kultaisin seuraavaksi?

I’ve entered a golden era. I knew this would happen, once you give the little finger, you end up going whole arm in. In the bookbinding class, there’s a device I call the “gilding machine.” I’ve used it a few times to gild book covers with different fonts. It’s slow, meticulous work, and you can’t do it at home. But our teacher told us about a different gilding method, and that’s when things really took off. The gilding machine uses heat to transfer the gold from the foil on to the book cover or leather. However, you can attach gold foil with just glue, without heat. The result is rougher and not precise. It’s still suitable for handmade notebooks and other more rustic projects, though.

I’ve actually made a couple of these gilded notebooks already. The binding is easy and fairly quick to make, and you can reuse old pretty book covers for it. Years ago, I found a book at a flea market that had truly stunning covers, but the flea market vendor had stuck a price tag sticker right on the cover. When I peeled it off, it naturally tore the fragile old paper. And the price tag had been on the cover twice, judging by the fact that there was already one tear in the cover. But no worries, I patched it up with gold foil. So this was a sort of bookbinding kintsugi.

These gilded notebooks turned out so lovely I would just want to gild everything. What should I gild next?
