No nyth\u00e4n me ollaankin sitten jo Englannissa. Doverin valkoisilta kallioilta ajoimme ensimm\u00e4iseen kohteeseemme Portsmouthiin. Portsmouth on historiallinen satamakaupunki Etel\u00e4-Englannissa ja sielt\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyykin laivoista kiinnostuneille upeaa katsottavaa. Kerron siit\u00e4 my\u00f6hemmin lis\u00e4\u00e4. Portsmouthista tai sen l\u00e4hist\u00f6lt\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t my\u00f6s pienehk\u00f6 luonnontieteellinen museo (Lontoon meininkeihin tottuneelle tosin aika pateettinen yritys)<\/strong><\/span>, Charles Dickensin syntym\u00e4koti, Kuninkaallinen merenk\u00e4ynti-museo, monenmoisia kirkkoja ja linnoja arkkitehtuurista kiinnostuneille ja akvaario. Siell\u00e4 voi viihdytt\u00e4\u00e4 itse\u00e4\u00e4n golfaamalla, helikopterilennoilla, kuuluisuusteemaisilla polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4retkill\u00e4 tai kummituskiertoajeluilla. P\u00e4iv\u00e4matkan p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 ovat mm. Arundel, Southampton ja Fishbournen roomalainen palatsi. Shoppaillakin voi, on siell\u00e4 ainakin Primark.<\/p>\n

Portsmouthista menimme yhdeksi p\u00e4iv\u00e4ksi Lontooseen, koska olin buukannut itselleni esiintymiskeikan Camdeniin. Tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4n kaverin oli tarkoitus majoittaa meid\u00e4t yhdeksi y\u00f6ksi, joten j\u00e4timme auton siihen kaupunginosaan jossa h\u00e4n sanoi asuvansa. Sovimme ett\u00e4 tapaisimme h\u00e4net sitten siell\u00e4 burleskibileiss\u00e4 illalla. Mutta h\u00e4np\u00e4 ei sitten koskaan ilmaantunut paikalle, vaikka viel\u00e4 pari tuntia ennen keikkaa laittoi viestin, ett\u00e4 n\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n kahdeksan j\u00e4lkeen. Onneksi tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4j\u00e4 sai meille sitten j\u00e4rjestetty\u00e4 y\u00f6pymisen t\u00e4ysin tuntemattoman naishenkil\u00f6n kotona. Suuret kiitokset h\u00e4nelle vieraanvaraisuudesta ja uskaliaisuudesta. Itse olin siin\u00e4 vaiheessa jo varautunut nukkumaan yhden y\u00f6n autossa. Onneksi ei tarvinnut. Kiitokseksi annoimme naiselle pullon suomalaista herkkua, salmiakkikossua. H\u00e4nen reaktiotaan makuun voisi kuvailla liev\u00e4sti j\u00e4rkyttyneeksi.<\/p>\n

Seuraavana aamuna jatkoimme matkaa Stratford upon Avoniin, Shakespearen kotikaupunkiin. Ja sen kyll\u00e4 huomaa. Shakespearella rahastetaan ihan joka paikassa. Vaikka kaupunki on muutenkin kiinnostava ja siell\u00e4 on paljon n\u00e4kemisenarvoista niin herra S kyll\u00e4 n\u00e4kyy kaikkialla. Kaupungin halki virtaa Avon-joki, jonne p\u00e4\u00e4see ajelemaan jokiproomuilla. Melkein keskell\u00e4 kaupunkia on pieni k\u00e4sik\u00e4ytt\u00f6inen kanava jossa proomut kulkevat l\u00e4pi, hiukan et\u00e4\u00e4mm\u00e4ll\u00e4 on k\u00e4sik\u00e4ytt\u00f6inen pieni lossi jalankulkijoille. Lis\u00e4ksi koko kaupunki on t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 hurmaavia vanhoja rakennuksia. Stratfordista l\u00f6ytyy jo esitelty perhosfarmi, lukuisia teattereita (esitt\u00e4en Shakespearen tuotoksia luonnollisesti)<\/strong><\/span>, Anne Hathawayn kotitalo (Shakespearen vaimo)<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0ja\u00a0mekaanisen taiteen museo. P\u00e4iv\u00e4matkan p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 voi k\u00e4yd\u00e4 visiteeraamassa vaikkapa aiemmin esitellyss\u00e4 Cheddarissa tai Bletchley Parkissa, josta kerron my\u00f6hemmin lis\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Stratfordista on my\u00f6s lyhyt matka Birminghamiin, jossa\u00a0k\u00e4vimme p\u00e4iv\u00e4retkell\u00e4. Siell\u00e4 sattui matkamme aikana olemaan burleski- ja alternativetapahtuma. Samalle p\u00e4iv\u00e4lle osui my\u00f6s vintage-myyj\u00e4iset jonne t\u00f6rm\u00e4simme ihan sattumalta etsiess\u00e4mme burleskitapahtumaa. Jos te lukijat taas osutte matkoillanne Stratford upon Avoniin, niin suosittelen k\u00e4ym\u00e4\u00e4n Fourteas-nimisess\u00e4<\/a> teesalongissa. Se on 40-luvun tyylinen kahvila, jossa vierailu on el\u00e4mys jo sin\u00e4ns\u00e4. Tarjoilijat ovat pukeutuneet tyylin mukaan, ja paikan sisustus noudattelee sota-ajan teemoja (tosin t\u00e4ysin autenttisia yksityiskohtia etsiville saattaa paikka olla pettymys, itse kuitenkin pidin kovasti)<\/strong><\/span>. Tee ja voileiv\u00e4t ainakin olivat herkullisia. Meille t\u00e4t\u00e4 paikkaa suositteli majoituksemme tarjonnut rouva. Airbnb-majoituksissa kannattaa muutenkin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 is\u00e4ntien paikallistietoutta hyvist\u00e4 ravintoloista ja vierailukohteista tai tapahtumista.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa tein ylip\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n mit\u00e4\u00e4n ostoksia hirve\u00e4n v\u00e4h\u00e4n, joten shoppailuvinkkej\u00e4 mulla ei oikein ole nyt antaa. Waterstones on lempikirjakauppani, joten siell\u00e4 k\u00e4yn joka kerta ainakin haaveilemassa jos ei muuta. Historia- ja scifikirjojen valikoima on eritt\u00e4in hyv\u00e4 joten nytkin l\u00f6ysin yhden sota-ajan muotia k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4n kirjan.<\/p>\n

And now we are in England. From the white cliffs of Dover we drove straight to our first place of visit Portsmouth. It is historical harbour town in South England. There’s fabulous things to see for those who love ships. I will tell you more about that later. Portsmouth also has tiny Museum of natural history (those accustomed to London museums might be\u00a0huge disappointment)<\/strong><\/span>, Charles Dickens birth home, Royal Nautical museum, many churches and castles for those interested in architecture and Aquarium. You can entertain yourself with golf, helicopter flights, celebrity bike tours and ghost tours. Within daytrip distance are Arundel, Southampton and Fishbourne roman palace. You can also do some shopping, they got atleast Primark.<\/p>\n

After Portsmouth we went to London for one day, because I booked myself a gig in Camden. Event organizer’s friend was supposed to accommodate us for one night, so we left our car to the area where he lives. We agreed to meet him at the party. But he never showed up, even though I got a message couple hours before the gig that he would meet us there around eight. Thankfully the event organizer managed to get us place to stay with this lady who we didn’t know. Huge thank you for her for the hospitality and courage. I was already prepared to sleep one night in the car. Thankfully we didn’t have to. As a thank you we gave her a bottle of Finnish treat, salmiakkikossu (strong liquorice vodka)<\/strong><\/span>. Her reaction to the taste could be described somewhat shocked.<\/p>\n

Next morning we continued our journey to Stratford upon Avon, Shakespeares hometown. And that is something you certainly notice.\u00a0Everyone is trying to benefit on Shakespeare. Even though this little town is very interesting place and there is lots more to see, Mr S. is something you really notice everywhere. River Avon runs through the town and you can take barge trips along the river. There is a little hand-operated lock\u00a0for the barges and several footsteps away is hand-operated little foot ferry. And the whole town is full of charming old buildings. The Butterfly farm (already told you about that)<\/strong><\/span> is there, several theaters (showing Shakespeare plays ofcourse)<\/strong><\/span>, Anne Hathaway’s house (Shakespeare’s wife)<\/strong><\/span> and the museum of mechanical art. Day trip away you can find Cheddar Gorge and Bletchley Park (more of that later)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Birmingham is also short drive away. We did a short trip there, because they happened to have burlesque and alternative event going on there during our trip. On the same trip we bumped into vintage fair, when searching for the burlesque event venue. If you travel to Stratford upon Avon, I highly recommend tea house called Fourteas<\/a>. It’s 40’s style cafe, which really tickled my fancy. It’s decorated in vintage and wartime style and staff is wearing matching outfits (allthough those searching authentic vintage interior might get disappointed, but I liked it)<\/strong><\/span>. Tea and sandwiches were delicious. This place was recommended to us by our host. When using Airbnb it’s always worth ask from your host if there is any events, good restaurants or places to see nearby.<\/p>\n

This time I didn’t do much shopping, so I don’t have much tips for those. Waterstones is my favourite book shop, so I visit there every time. Atleast to dream about books if not buying any. Their selection on history and scifi is really good and\u00a0this time I bought interesting wartime fashion book.<\/p>\n
