Palvelun ja varustelun taso siis vaihtelee paljon riippuen siit\u00e4 millainen henkil\u00f6 ja koti sattuu olemaan tarjolla. Me varasimme menomatkalle yhden y\u00f6n K\u00f6\u00f6penhaminan liepeille Roskildeen ja kaksi majapaikkaa Englantiin. Vaikka itse koen hiukan h\u00e4mment\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 menn\u00e4 asumaan tuntemattoman ihmisen kotiin, kaikki kolme majoitusta olivat eritt\u00e4in mukavia kokemuksia. Koska olimme varanneet liput lautoille jo etuk\u00e4teen, meill\u00e4 ei juurikaan ollut aikaa pys\u00e4hty\u00e4 matkalla vaan ajoimme suoraa kyyti\u00e4. Y\u00f6lautalla siis Turusta Tukholmaan ja l\u00e4pi Ruotsin. Pys\u00e4hdyimme muutamia kertoja kahvitauolle, mutta muuten ajoimme suorinta reitti\u00e4. Meill\u00e4h\u00e4n k\u00e4vi pikkuinen k\u00e4mmi kun emme tajunneet tarkistaa siltamaksuja. Juutinrauman (\u00d6resund)<\/strong><\/span> silta Malm\u00f6st\u00e4 Kastrupiin on maksullinen, muistaakseni noin 50\u20ac. Toinen vaihtoehto on ottaa lautta Helsingborista Helsing\u00f6riin, mutta se taitaa\u00a0olla siltatullia kalliimpi. Ajomatka Tukholmasta K\u00f6\u00f6penhaminaan kesti taukoineen noin 7,5 tuntia. K\u00f6piksest\u00e4 Roskildeen ajaa ehk\u00e4 maksimissaan puolisen tuntia.<\/p>\n Roskilde on monille tuttu musafestareista. Itse en niit\u00e4 harrasta joten t\u00e4m\u00e4 oli ensimm\u00e4inen kerta sill\u00e4 suunnalla. Siell\u00e4 tapahtuu toki paljon muutakin, kuten joka kes\u00e4torstai vintage-autojen kokoontumisajo. Y\u00f6vytty\u00e4mme yhden y\u00f6n Roskildessa (no, voiko puhua edes kokonaisesta y\u00f6st\u00e4 sill\u00e4 poistuimme majapaikasta jo nelj\u00e4n aikaan aamuy\u00f6st\u00e4)<\/strong><\/span>, jatkoimme matkaa kohti\u00a0Saksaa.\u00a0Toinen maksullinen silta on Tanskassa Sj\u00e4lland- ja Fyn-saarien v\u00e4linen, Euroopan pisin silta Iso-Beltin salmessa. Sen siltamaksu oli v\u00e4h\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4lle 30\u20ac. N\u00e4kemisen arvoinen rakennelma kyll\u00e4 sekin.<\/p>\n Ajomatka Tanskasta Saksan, Hollannin ja Belgian kautta Ranskaan oli koko matkan puuduttavin osuus sill\u00e4 emme pys\u00e4htyneen tosiaan maisemia katselemaan vaan kahvipausseja lukuunottamatta ajoimme suoraan Dunkirkiin, josta kulkee\u00a0lautta Englantiin. Roskildesta Dunkirkiin 3-4 nopeahkon pys\u00e4hdyksen kanssa kesti ajaa noin 12,5 tuntia. Toki jos ei halua ajaa itse\u00e4\u00e4n ihan piippuun kannattaa menn\u00e4 kahden pys\u00e4hdyksen taktiikalla ja y\u00f6py\u00e4 lis\u00e4ksi vaikka\u00a0Amsterdamissa. Meill\u00e4 oli alunperin tarkoituksena pys\u00e4hty\u00e4 Hampurissa ja siten tasata hiukan ajo-osuuksia, mutta emme saaneet sielt\u00e4 Airbnb-majoitusta, joten oli tyytyminen Roskildeen.<\/p>\n No niin, sitten ollaan p\u00e4\u00e4sty Dunkirkiin, josta p\u00e4\u00e4see lautalla Doveriin. Muita vaihtoehtoja ovat Calaisin lautta tai Eurotunneli. Hintoja kannattaa vertailla. Tunneli on toki hiukan nopeampi, mutta ei niin merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti etteik\u00f6 lautta olisi ihan vertailukelpoinen. Lautassakin tietysti vaikuttaa viikonp\u00e4iv\u00e4 ja sesonki hintoihin. Me valitsimme Dunkirkin joka on hiljaisempi ja huomattavasti halvempi kuin Calais (nyky\u00e4\u00e4n kuulemma tyk\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n tarkistella niit\u00e4 valojen suuntauksia etenkin Ranskan puolella ja sakot voi rapsahtaa jos niit\u00e4 ei tarkastuksessa l\u00f6ydy)<\/strong><\/span>. Etuk\u00e4teen ostetuissa lipuissa on pikkuisen joustovaraa. Lipun voi satamassa vaihtaa joko yht\u00e4 aikaisempaan tai yht\u00e4 my\u00f6h\u00e4isemp\u00e4\u00e4n lauttaan, JOS siell\u00e4 on tilaa. Meilt\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 onnistui sek\u00e4 meno- ett\u00e4 paluumatkalla ja p\u00e4\u00e4simme kahta tuntia aikaisemmalla lautalla yli. Itse lauttamatka on kutakuinkin sama kuin Helsingist\u00e4 Tallinnaan, 1,5-2 tuntia. Lauttamatkan aikana n\u00e4ill\u00e4 lyhyemmill\u00e4kin reiteill\u00e4 autokannella hengailu on kielletty, joten kannattaa ottaa autosta mukaan kaikki sellainen jota kuvittelee tarvitsevansa lautalla.<\/p>\n T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen onkin sitten en\u00e4\u00e4 se hankalin osuus, eli Englannissa ajaminen. Siit\u00e4 sitten lis\u00e4\u00e4 kakkososassa. T\u00e4h\u00e4n loppuun viel\u00e4 varoituksen sana. T\u00e4llaisilla ajomatkoilla auto joutuu aika kovalle koetukselle. Auto kannattaa siis oikeasti huollattaa ennen matkaa. Eik\u00e4 se mit\u00e4 aiemmin sanoin renkaiden uusimisesta ollut vitsi sek\u00e4\u00e4n. Meill\u00e4 tyhjeni\u00a0ensimm\u00e4inen rengas Englannissa, jossa l\u00f6ysimme em\u00e4nt\u00e4mme avustuksella rengasliikkeen helposti ja saimme uusittua rikkin\u00e4isen venttiilin ilman kustannuksia ja lis\u00e4vaurioita. Toinen venttiili hajosi kotimatkalla Saksassa, noin 70 kilometri\u00e4 ennen Tanskan rajaa. Valitettavasti olimme ehtineet ajamaan vioittuneella renkaalla sen verran pitk\u00e4\u00e4n, ett\u00e4 uuden renkaan ostaminen oli pakollista. Rengasliikkeen l\u00f6yt\u00e4minen l\u00e4helt\u00e4 oli jopa Googlen avulla jokseenkin tuurista kiinni. Saksalaiset yritykset eiv\u00e4t juuri operoi englanninkielisin nettisivuin eik\u00e4 meist\u00e4 kumpikaan varsinaisesti\u00a0puhu saksaa. Voimme my\u00f6s kiitt\u00e4\u00e4 onneamme ett\u00e4 se tapahtui iltap\u00e4iv\u00e4ll\u00e4 eik\u00e4 esim keskell\u00e4 y\u00f6t\u00e4 (ajoimme paluumatkalla l\u00e4pi y\u00f6n)<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n There is couple more visit places on our trip which I want to share, but I will do my basic travel story before that. It will be long, bare with me. I heard that couple people might be planning similar trip so I thought perhaps it’s worth to tell everything. \u00a0And while I still remember it well, I better write it down.<\/p>\n As I told you earlier, this time we decided to drive to England instead of flying. And for that we needed to find out regulations in different countries. If the car is newer model, there’s European licence plate and automatic light adjustments for leftsided driving. Ours had neither, as you already know. Driving in France required also previously mentioned alco tests and safety vests. They do sell all these on England-France ferries (except FIN-stickers)<\/strong><\/span> as we found out later. You should also check your car insurance, if it requires some additional papers when driving abroad. There might also be some individual rules for each country you should check in advance.<\/p>\n To minimize our travel budget, we decided to try Airbnb accommodation for this trip. It is online service where people accommodate travelers in their own homes. Quality and service will vary depending on what kind of person and home is available. We booked one night in Roskilde, nearby Copenhagen and two places in England. Even though I find it a bit strange to go and live in a strangers home, all three were very nice experiences. Our hosts were very friendly and helpfull people. Homes were tidy and rooms comfy. I don’t know if we were just lucky or is it always like this.<\/p>\n Because we booked our ferry tickets in advance, we didn’t have much time to make pitstops but we had to drive pretty much straight to the ferry. We took night ferry from Turku to Stockholm and then drove through Sweden. We stopped couple times for coffee, but otherwise it was straight through. We made a bit of a cock up and forgot to check bridge tolls. \u00d6resund bridge between Malm\u00f6 and Kastrup has a toll, about 50 \u20ac if I remember correctly. Other option is to take ferry from\u00a0Helsingborg to Helsing\u00f6r, but that might be even more expensive. Drive time from Stockholm to C\u00f6penhagen with short breaks was about 7,5 hours. Copenhagen to Roskilde is about half an hour drive.<\/p>\n Many people know Roskilde from music festivals. I don’t do those, so this was my first time in Roskilde. There are many other events too, like meeting of vintage cars every Thursday during Summer. After one night in Roskilde (if you can even call it a full night, we were back on the road around 4 AM)<\/strong><\/span> we continued towards Germany. Other toll bridge in Denmark is between Sj\u00e4lland and Fyn island, called Great Belt bridge, the largest in Europe. Toll on that is just over 30 \u20ac. It’s worth seeing as it is, a massive thing.<\/p>\n Drive from Denmark through Germany, Netherlands and Belgium to France was the most tiring leg of the journey, because we did not stop for sightseeing. We only had couple coffee breaks and that’s it. Drive from Roskilde to Dunkirk ferry with 3-4 quick stops was about 12,5 hours. If you don’t want to tire yourself too much, two overnight stays along the\u00a0road might be an idea. We were originally going to stay the night in Hamburg to even out the drive times, but we didn’t get Airbnb accommodation there so we had to settle for Roskilde.<\/p>\n Well then, we made it to Dunkirk, which is the port for ferries to Dover. Other options are Calais port or Eurotunnel. It’s worth comparing prices. Tunnel is little bit faster, but not so much that it’s definitely\u00a0worth considering the ferries aswell. The time of season and day of the week also affect on the ferry price. We chose Dunkirk over Calais. It is quieter and much cheaper than Calais (they also like to often check the light adjustments on french side and are eager to ticket if you don’t have them). There is little bit allowance on the pre-booked tickets. You can switch to two hours earlier or later ferry, IF there is room. This worked for us both on going and returning, and we could take the earlier ferry. Even on the short ferry trips you are not allowed on car deck, so take with you everything you might need during the 1,5-2 hour trip.<\/p>\n And after this the most difficult part was left, driving in England. More about that in the second part. Finally I want to give a tip. On these kind of road trips the car is on huge stress. So you seriously should have it maintained before the trip. And what I said earlier about renewing the tires wasn’t a joke either. First tyre went flat in England. We were able to find tyre company\u00a0easily with the help of our host. So we were able to fix that without any cost nor more damage. Second tyre went flat in Germany on our way back home, about 70 mk from danish border. Unfortunately we drove quite long time with damaged tyre so we had to replace it. Finding a tyre company even with the help of Google was a lucky strike. German companies don’t really operate with English on their web pages. And neither of us really speaks any German.
