I remember faintly that as a kid I used to have red kilt. The kind of real looking one, with leather straps and buckles at the waist and huge safety pin to keep the front layers in place. I’m not sure how old I was at that time, but possible it was before I went to school. Well, I have now returned to the kilt age. I found a kilt\u00a0from local charity shop, when they had reduced prices. It cost me one euro.<\/p>\n Skirt is 100% wool and it’s made by Royatex in Great Britain. It looks just like real kilts, double layers in front and pleats at the back. Two leather straps and buckles on the waist. Only the original kilt pin is missing. If the information I found is correct, real kilt should be knee length. So this skirt is actually a tartan skirt rather than kilt.<\/p>\n Originally kilt was worn by men, but now also women wear it. Original Great Kilt was 5 meters long piece of fabric which was tied on the waist with belt and rest of it was thrown over shoulder and worn as a cape or over head as a hood. Modern style “small kilt” has been in use since the early 1700’s. Modern kilt is usually formal\u00a0celebration garment or traditional outfit, not just for Scotts. So it can be worn by other nationalities too. Of course kilt has also been inspiration to modern fashion. So not everything called kilt are necessary real kilts.<\/p>\n Plaid fabrics most often used for\u00a0making kilts and other garments is called tartan. Specific tartan sets and colours are registered to certain families, associations or companies. I’m sure everyone knows beige and black Burberry plaid<\/a>, which is naturally a tartan registered to Burberry. In addition to Burberry, probably the most well known tartan in the world is the red and black plaid<\/a>, registered for the family of Rob Roy Macgregor, a Scottish folk hero. Old Scottish families have their own tartans, which they use in their outfits.
