Kyll\u00e4 se on kuulkaa niin ett\u00e4 odottaminen maksaa vaivan! Olen nimitt\u00e4in jo useamman vuoden etsinyt kirppiksilt\u00e4 aurinkovarjoa jolla voisin suojautua kes\u00e4n kuumalta auringolta sopivan vintage-henkisesti. Mietin jo pariin otteeseen ett\u00e4 tilaisin jonkun pitsisen virityksen netist\u00e4, mutta en kuitenkaan saanut aikaiseksi. Ja kyll\u00e4 kannatti. Minusta on nimitt\u00e4in parin viime kuukauden aikana tullut per\u00e4ti kahden kauniin vintage-varjon omistaja. Ja viel\u00e4p\u00e4 aivan pilkkahintaan.<\/p>\n

Toinen varjoista on valkoinen paperivarjo ja toinen, t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n kirpputorilta l\u00f6ytynyt on hurmaava painokuosillinen kangasvarjo. Arvelisin ett\u00e4 kumpainenkin on jonkinlainen tuliainen kaukomailta. Ne ovat hurmaavasti patinoituneet, mutta eiv\u00e4t varmaankaan useita vuosikymmeni\u00e4 vanhoja. Tyylillisesti kyll\u00e4 sopivat hirmuisen hyvin vintageharrastajalle. Erityisesti 1800-luvun lopulla ja 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenin\u00e4 orientalismi oli hyvin suosittua. Se n\u00e4kyi niin arkkitehtuurissa ja taiteessa kuin sisustuksessa ja muodissakin. 20-luvun oopperatakit ja iltapuvut saivat vaikutteita it\u00e4maisista vaatteista ja viel\u00e4 30-luvullakin orientalismi n\u00e4kyi mm. ornamenteissa ja koristeissa.<\/p>\n

Aurinkovarjo keksittiin jo tuhansia vuosia sitten ja nykyiseen muotoonsa se kehittyi noin 4000 vuotta sitten Egyptiss\u00e4, Assyyriassa ja Kiinassa. Sielt\u00e4 se levisi ensin antiikin Kreikkaan ja Roomaan ja v\u00e4hitellen muuhunkin Eurooppaan, joissa siit\u00e4 muodostui varakkaiden naisten statussymboli. Maidonvalkea, auringolta suojattu iho kertoi varakkuudesta ja siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 henkil\u00f6n ei tarvinnut tehd\u00e4 ty\u00f6t\u00e4 el\u00e4\u00e4kseen. It\u00e4maistyylisi\u00e4 paperisia aurinkovarjoja voi n\u00e4hd\u00e4 paljon 1800-luvun lopun maalauksissa, mutta aurinkovarjon suosio alkoi hiipua 20-luvulla. Silloin yl\u00e4luokka alkoi kiinnostua aktiivisesta ulkoilmael\u00e4m\u00e4st\u00e4 ja aiemmin rahvaanomainen rusketus tuli muotiin. Se kertoi ett\u00e4 henkil\u00f6ll\u00e4 oli varaa ja aikaa harrastaa vaikkapa purjehdusta tai tennist\u00e4, toisin kuin ty\u00f6v\u00e4enluokalla jotka kalvakoituivat tehtaiden pimennossa.<\/p>\n

It is definitely worth waiting, I tell you! I have been searching several years a parasol, which I desperately need on hot summer days to protect myself from the sun in a vintage-appropriate manner. I have been thinking about ordering a lace parasol online, but never got around doing it. Which was only a good thing, because within past couple months I have become a very happy owner of, not one, but two beautiful vintage parasols. And they were true bargains too.<\/p>\n

First of the parasols is plain off-white paper parasol. And the other one, thrifted today, is beautiful printed fabric parasol. I assume they are both souvenirs from far east. They have rather charming patina on them, but I doubt they are very many decades old. Their style suits very nicely to vintage enthusiast. Especially the end of 1800’s and early decades of 1900’s the orientalism was very popular. It reflected to architecture, interior decoration, art and fashion. 20’s opera coats and evening gowns got lot of inspiration from orient and even as late as in the 30’s orientalism had it’s fingers in ornaments and decorations.<\/p>\n

Parasol was invented many millennia ago and developed into it’s current shape around 4000 years ago in Egypt, Assyria and China. It then spread to Ancient Greece and Rome and bit by bit all over Europe. It became a status symbol for wealthy ladies. Milky white skin, protected from sun, was a sign of wealth and hinted that person did not need to earn their living by working. Oriental style paper parasols can be seen quite a lot in the paintings of late 1800’s. However the popularity started to fade in the 20’s. The upper class started to enjoy the active outdoor life and made previously vulgar tanning very popular. Tanned skin was now a sign of wealth. It revealed the fact that the person had enough money and time to do some outdoor activities, like sailing or tennis, unlike the working class which was forced to stay pale in the darkness of the factories.<\/p>\n
