But it was definitely worth it. We went to the Seaplane Harbour, which is a museum in Tallinn, that was holding the Titanic Artifact exhibition. We also saw the other exhibitions in the museum, which included most interesting estonian submarine Lembit.

Sub was built in the 30’s being the longest used submarine in the world. It was removed from active use in 2011. Now it is inside the museum hall and people can go inside. This was perhaps even more exciting to me than the actual Titanic exhibition, since I’ve never been inside submarine before. And my inner steampunk lover was of course fascinated by all the brass knobs and levers and meters. Museum guide told us that there used to be crew with 32 members and the longest of them was 192 cm tall. So 20 cm more than I am. Perhaps it’s not that clear on the photos, but you can imagine. Even I had to bend when standing on the sides of the sub.

Punkat / Bunk beds

Two other things caught my attention especially. We weren’t allowed to climb on them, but I can imagine what it feels like to lie on one of them when the next bunk bed is just about 30 cm away from your face. Also some of the crew had to sleep in the same space with the torpedo tubes and torpedos. Racks for the torpedos were literally right next to the beds. Quite scary thought to sleep next to a bomb. All though if torpedo would go off inside the sub, I don’t think it much mattered where in the sub you located at the time.

Steampunk-faneille hieman messinkiä /
Little brass for steampunk fans

All visitors for the Titanic exhibition received ticket, with printed information about real random passenger on Titanic. Exhibition included reconstructions of original interiors like first and second class cabins and Grand staircase, items from the wreck and info boards about the construction, voyage and sinking of Titanic and stories of several passengers on board. I have always been fascinated about the story of Titanic and I’ve learned quite a lot about the events and what lead to the sad result. There was quite a lot just bad luck involved too.

Most interesting things to me at the exhibition were the stories of individual passengers. It is intriguing in a grim way, how lives of many families changed just on a streak of bad luck. For example a man originally from Haiti, was planning on moving to Haiti with his family. He received travel tickets from his mother, who was still living in Haiti. The tickets were originally for another ship, but because of a malfunction on the ship, they were transferred to Titanic. They all perished. On the last hall of the exhibition had a passenger manifest divided on first, second and third class passengers and crew. Lists were also divided in two, based on who survived and who didn’t. Here you could check if the passenger on your ticket survived or not. Mine did, hubby’s didn’t.

Osastojen välillä olevat luukut eivät ole kovin suuria.
