N\u00e4in\u00e4 massatuotannon aikoina ihmisilt\u00e4 on p\u00e4\u00e4ssyt h\u00e4m\u00e4rtym\u00e4\u00e4n ett\u00e4 mit\u00e4 vaatteen valmistaminen vaatii ja mist\u00e4 kaikesta lopullinen myyntihinta koostuu. Kun tuotetaan yht\u00e4 ja samaa vaatetta tuhansia ja kymmeni\u00e4 tuhansia kappaleita, pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n kustannukset minimoimaan niin ett\u00e4 yhdelle vaatteelle j\u00e4\u00e4 hintaa vain muutamia euroja, jos sit\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n. Mit\u00e4 monimutkaisemmat leikkaukset ja mit\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n yksityiskohtia, sit\u00e4 kalliimpi vaate. Laskokset, rypytykset, erikoiset leikkaukset ja muut koristeet nostavat hintaa. Yksitt\u00e4iskappaleena asiakkaan mittojen mukaan teht\u00e4v\u00e4 vaate on luonnollisesti kalliimpi kuin pienen sarjan varastokokoinen vaate. Kun ompelimo tekee omaa mallistoa, ei riit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 tuosta noin vain suit’sukkelaan leikkaa ja ompelee vaatteen. Vaate pit\u00e4\u00e4 ensin suunnitella ja kaavoittaa. Kaavoittamisessa suuren osan ajasta vie peruskaavan kuosittelu ja peruskokoisen kaavan sarjominen eri kokoihin.<\/p>\n

Yll\u00e4 mainitut kustannukset ovat suoraan tuotteeseen kohdistuvia kustannuksia. Kun vaatteen myyntihinta jaetaan n\u00e4iden kaikkien kesken voidaan siltikin todeta ett\u00e4 jokainen mainituista kohdista vie vaatteen hinnasta vain pienen osuuden. Niiden lis\u00e4ksi on muita ep\u00e4suoria kustannuksia jotka my\u00f6s vaikuttavat tuotteen hintaan, joskaan eiv\u00e4t yht\u00e4 suuresti kuin valmistuskustannukset.<\/p>\n

N\u00e4in ollen Suomessa k\u00e4sity\u00f6n\u00e4 valmistettu vaate ei voi maksaa 10 tai edes 20 euroa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kohtaa voidaan my\u00f6s mietti\u00e4 sit\u00e4 millaista palkkaa halpatuotantomaassa, kuten esim Bangladeshissa ompelijat saavat. Verkkokaupat ja niiden erilaiset provisioj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t sek\u00e4 pankkien kulut saattavat my\u00f6s vaikuttaa tuotteen hintaa korottavasti. N\u00e4iden lis\u00e4ksi verottaja jaksaa muistaa pienyritt\u00e4j\u00e4\u00e4 isolla arvonlis\u00e4verolla. Well then, Vapriikki-vintage is over and I’m finally starting to recover. Weekend went great all in all. One thing however, made me a bit upset. I overheard two customers talking when they were browsing my items. I head the sentence “How on earth is this skirt so expensive? There’s nothing more than fabric on this!”. Indeed. Nothing more than fabric on the skirt.<\/p>\n

On these massproduction times, people have forgotten the knowledge what it takes to make clothes and what kind of costs the final price includes. When producing thousands and tens of thousands pieces of one particular garment, the company tries to minimize the cost as good as possible, so that the cost for one garment is only couple euro’s, if even that. This way it is possible to sell this garment in cheap chain shop for 20 euro’s. Handmade local garments are quite different story. Even though I trust that my readers are more wiser on the matter and understand the value of handmade garment, I got still so pissed off that I’m now explaining, bit by bit, how the price is formed.<\/p>\n

COST OF HANDMADE GARMENT<\/strong><\/span>

\n– Pattern drafting & grading to different sizes, possible alterations to the pattern
\n– Cutting (fabric, lining, interfacings)
\n– Attaching interfacings
\n– Sewing the garment
\n– Finishing the garment (buttons, button holes, labels, cutting the thread ends etc.)
\n– Final ironing
\n– Pricing and pricetags<\/p>\n

MATERIALS<\/strong><\/span>
\n– Fabric
\n– Lining, if any
\n– Interfacings
\n– Buttons, zips, hooks, clasps, buckles etc.
\n– Decorations like ribbons, bows, ornaments<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When making one-of-a-kind or small series of garments, the time used on one garment, affects quite a lot on the price. The more complicated cuts and details, the more expensive garment. Pleats, ruffles, special cuts and other decorative elements raise the price. Tailor made unique piece is more expensive than garment from small collection in stock size. When seamstress makes a collection of their own, it’s not just matter of sewing. First the garment has to be designed and drafted. Drafting the model from basic pattern and grading the drafted pattern to different sizes takes quite some time.<\/p>\n

Those mentioned above are manufacturing costs. \u00a0When the price is divided to all these fragments of manufacturing costs, the amount per fragment is not much.\u00a0In addition to those, there are also indirect fixed costs that will affect on the price of the garment. All though they don’t have as big affect.<\/p>\n

\n– Acquiry & maintenance of the machinery and tools
\n– Accountant
\n– Marketing
\n– Office supply, cleaning supply etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As you can see, the price is combination of many things, where the actual work is practically seamstresses wages. \u00a0Knowing all this, you have to realize that handmade garment, made in Finland, or any other western country, cannot cost 10 \u20ac or not even 20 \u20ac. At this point you can also think about what kind of wages the seamstresses get in cheap mass production countries, like Bangladesh. Finnish high quality clothing factories have transferred their manufacturing to Far East long time ago, to cut down the cost of wages. Wages are the biggest cost of clothing industry. With the Finnish level of wages, it is not profitable to manufacture clothes here. Not even when the seamstresses wages actually are amongst the lowest \u00a0in Finland.<\/p>\n

But that’s not all. Selling the garment might also add to the price. Shops want to have their own share of the price. Online shops want their provision fees from sales and the banks might want something from transactions. And not to make it easy, finnish tax people want to have their 24% of every sold item. Different companies have their own way of calculating the price, and material expenses vary a lot depending on the product, but here is a very rough diagram of how the price forms.<\/p>\n

Selfemployed seamstress have to pay insurances and other workers expenses and income tax from that work amount. After that there is about 39 \u20ac left on our example case. And this doesn’t even include the profit yet, the profit which is needed for the company development and growth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
