Kirja alkaa tarinalla miten Susan tuli keksineeksi kruunajais-teemaisen neulekirjan idean, sek\u00e4 kertomalla hieman taustaa Elizabethin kruunajaisista. Kuten Susan itsekin alkusanoissa toteaa, t\u00e4m\u00e4 ei ole neuleopas aloittelijalle, se on teemakokoelma neuleohjeita niille jotka osaavat jo neuloa.\u00a0Neulemallit ovat Susanin omaa k\u00e4sialaa, mutta ne on suunniteltu 40- ja 50-luvun vaihteen tyyliin, innoituksena juuri kuningatar Elizabethin valtaanastujaiset ja kuninkaalliset. Kirjan p\u00e4\u00e4paino on naisten neuleissa, mutta l\u00f6ytyy sielt\u00e4 my\u00f6s muutamia lasten ja miesten malleja. Selkeiden kokotaulukoiden ja tarkkojen ohjeiden lis\u00e4ksi, jokaisen neuleen mukaan on liitetty pieni tarina siit\u00e4 mist\u00e4 kyseinen malli sai ideansa.<\/p>\n
Vaikka Susan Crawford on my\u00f6s muotihistorioitsija, h\u00e4nen Stitch in time 1-kirjassaan joidenkin neuleiden istuvuus ei reprona oikein vastannut alkuper\u00e4ist\u00e4 vanhaa mallia. Vintage-harrastajalle, kuten minulle, se oli paikoin silmiinpist\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4. Voihan olla ett\u00e4 malleja on yritetty muokata l\u00e4hemm\u00e4ksi modernia muotia, tai ehk\u00e4 asiaa ei oltu varsinaisesti ajateltukaan silt\u00e4 kantilta, tai ehk\u00e4 k\u00e4ytetty lanka osoittautukin turhan pehme\u00e4ksi suhteessa malliin, ei voi tiet\u00e4\u00e4. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kirjassa vastaavaa ongelmaa ei ole, tosin neulemallejakin on huomattavasti v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n. En ole viel\u00e4 kokeillut kirjan neuleohjeita, mutta suuruudenhulluissa suunnitelmissa on tehd\u00e4 is\u00e4nn\u00e4lle kruunu-liivi ja itselle kirjoneuletakki. T\u00e4llaisella pintapuolisemmalla selauksella kirjasta l\u00f6ytyy vain yksi puute: olisi ollut kivaa jos lastenkin neulemallit olisi kuvattu ihmisten p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4, ei pelk\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n henkarissa.<\/p>\n
I’m a bit slow warmer on new stuff, like books and albums etc. Usually I get them after the biggest hype has already gone. Same thing happened with this book. Thankfully handcraft-books don’t really get old. Last year when Queen Elizabeth II had her Diamond Jubilee, this charming knit book was published. Author Susan Crawford might be more familiar to you of her two other books: Stitch in time vol 1 and vol 2. Those are also pretty interesting books, but somehow this queen Elizabeth-related knit book was more tempting to me.<\/p>\n My best childhood friend hugely admired Princess Diana (greetings to you, my friend!)<\/strong><\/span>, so she must have managed to spread some of that enthusiasm over to me. And we do have native royalist here in the family. \u00a0I don’t really mind little royal touch (check my boutique logo, indeed there is a crown on it)<\/strong><\/span>, so I thought that this would the one knit book to get, if any. So I ordered it for a birthday gift for myself this Autumn. Which isn’t really a bad timing either, because this year the Queen is celebration the Diamond Jubilee of her Coronation. Confusing, I know. Elizabeth stepped on the throne when her father King George passed away 6.2.1952, but she was crowned the next year.<\/p>\n The book starts with the story how Susan got the idea for coronation themed knit book and with the background of the Coronation. As Susan herself says in the foreword, this is not a how-to-learn-to-knit, but a collection of theme knits for those who already know how to knit. Designs are her own, but they are styled for the late 40’s and early 50’s, the time of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. Most patterns in the book are for women, but there is also couple for men and children. Clear size charts and pricice instructions come also with small story what inspired that particular pattern.<\/p>\n Even though Susan Crawford is also fashion historian, some knits in her Stitch in time vol 1 are not as fitted as repro as the original old models are. For a vintage-lover, like me, this was a bit of a spoiler. It’s quite possible that they have tried to bring them up to the more modern fashion, or perhaps they didn’t even think about it really, or maybe the yarn was a bit too soft for the pattern, who knows. However with this Coronation knit-book there is no such problem, all though there is not as many patterns either. I haven’t had the chance to try any of the patterns yet, but my megalomaniac plans are to knit crown pullover for hubby and fair isle cardigan for myself. Viime vuonna kun Englannin kuningatar Elizabeth vietti valtaanastujaistensa 60. juhlavuotta, julkaistiin t\u00e4m\u00e4 aika hurmaava neulekirjanen.
