Joulukalenterin kuudennessa luukussa juhlistetaan hieman Suomen itsen\u00e4isyytt\u00e4 kuten Itsen\u00e4isyysp\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 asiaan kuuluu. Mutta t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n en hehkuttele itsen\u00e4isyysp\u00e4iv\u00e4n vastaanoton asuja vaikka juhla poikkeuksellisesti vietet\u00e4\u00e4nkin kotikaupungissani (pit\u00e4isik\u00f6 menn\u00e4 kyyl\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n Tampere-talon nurkille jos n\u00e4kisi julkkiksia?)<\/strong><\/span>. Sen sijaan katsomme taaksep\u00e4in siihen aikaan kun Suomi itsen\u00e4istyi. Olen vuosien mittaan ker\u00e4nnyt nipun vanhoja valokuvia. L\u00e4hesk\u00e4\u00e4n kaikissa valokuvissa ei ole tarkkaa vuosilukua, mutta vaatteista voidaan kutakuinkin p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4 milloin ne on kuvattu. Tarkastellaan siis hieman millaiselta muoti n\u00e4ytti Suomen itsen\u00e4istymisen aikoihin. Ajatuksenani oli ett\u00e4 kuvissa esiintyisi suomalaista muotia, mutta tarkempi tutkiskelu osoitti ett\u00e4 suuri osa kuvista on kuvattu jossakin muualla, mutta eip\u00e4 anneta sen h\u00e4irit\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Behind the sixth door of my Calendar we celebrate independent Finland. Our country got independent 6.12.1917 and every year our current president hosts an Independence day reception at the President Castle, Helsinki. However, this year the castle is under repairs so the reception is being held in my home town, Tampere (should I go and see if I can spot any celebrities?)<\/strong><\/span>. The event is being televised and it’s popular amusement to watch what people are wearing. Today I won’t go through those gowns in my blog, but we look back to the time of the actual independence. During years I have collected pile of old photos. Not all of them have dates on them, but based on what people are wearing on them, I’m able to estimate the time. So let’s have a look of what the fashion was around the time when Finland got independent. My original idea was to show fashion from Finland. At closer look I realized that many photos have been photographed outside Finland, but let’s not allow that disturb us.<\/p>\n

Kuva on otettu G\u00f6teborgissa 1914, mutta en usko ett\u00e4 tuon ajan muoti oli Suomessa kovinkaan erilaista. Huomatkaa taidokas palmikkokampaus ja puseron erikoiset rypyli\u00e4iset koristenapit. Kabinettikortin kuva on muutenkin hieman ep\u00e4tyypillinen sivuprofiilikuva, joka ehk\u00e4 valittu juuri n\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4n kampauksen vuoksi.

Photo has been taken in G\u00f6teborg in 1914 but I don’t think the fashion in Finland was that much different at that time. Notice the skilfull hairdo and decorative buttons on the blouse. Cabinet card photo is rather unusual because it is side profile, but that might have been chosen because of the pretty hairdo.\u00a0<\/em>

T\u00e4m\u00e4 kuva on l\u00e4hetetty postikorttina Saloon, Neiti Elin Fernstr\u00f6mille. Kortti on p\u00e4iv\u00e4tty 8\/4 1913 Liverpoolissa S\/S Borgilalla<\/a>. \u00a0Knut-veli kirjoittaa rakkaalle siskolleen ja l\u00e4hett\u00e4\u00e4 terveisi\u00e4 sed\u00e4lle ja t\u00e4dille.\u00a0Kortissa mainitaan herra Fred Olsen Norjasta, mutta en p\u00e4\u00e4se selvyyteen onko kuvan muhkeaviiksinen herra Fred, vaiko kortin kirjoittaja Knut. Niin tai n\u00e4in, herra on varsin tyylik\u00e4s knalleineen ja villakangastakkeineen. Asu on tyypillinen miesten asu t\u00e4rk\u00e4ttyine irtokauluksineen, joskaan knalli ei\u00a0ehk\u00e4\u00a0ollut niit\u00e4 tyypillisimpi\u00e4 hattuja Suomessa.\u00a0Solmio sen sijaan on aika erikoinen, solmu n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 menev\u00e4n irtokauluksen ymp\u00e4ri.<\/p>\n

This photo has been sent as a post card to Salo, Finland, to Miss Elin Fernstr\u00f6m. Card is dated 8\/4 1913 in Liverpool on S\/S Borgila<\/a>. Brother Knut is writing to his dear sister and sending greetings to his uncle and aunt. One Mister Fred Olsen from Norway is also mentioned on the card, but I can’t \u00a0figure out if the man with chubby moustache is actually Knut or Fred. Either way, this gentleman is rather stylish with his bowler hat and wool coat. Outfit is quite typical for the time with starched separate collar, even though bowler hat was not the most typical hat style here in Finland.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Tie is quite unusual, knot seems to go around the separate collar.<\/em><\/p>\n

T\u00e4m\u00e4n on kuvannut William Hoffer New Yorkissa (ostin t\u00e4m\u00e4n kuvan kyll\u00e4 ihan Suomesta)<\/strong><\/span>. Ja miten niin muka ennen ei matkusteltu yht\u00e4 paljon kuin nyky\u00e4\u00e4n? \u00a0Asu on tyypillist\u00e4 1910-lukua tosin ei ehk\u00e4 niin yleist\u00e4 Suomessa, t\u00e4llaisen asun voisi kuvitella suoraan Titanicin kannelle. \u00a0Asu koostuu ajan tyypillisest\u00e4 alasp\u00e4in levenev\u00e4st\u00e4, p\u00e4\u00e4ntielt\u00e4 avonaisesta puvusta jonka alla k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n koristeellista puseroa tai irrallista edustaa. Leve\u00e4 vy\u00f6 korostaa vy\u00f6t\u00e4r\u00f6n linjaa.<\/p>\n

This has been taken by William Hoffer in New York (allthough I did buy this photo from Finland)<\/strong><\/span>. What do you mean people didn’t travel much in the old days? Outfit is typical from 1910’s, though not so common style in Finland, but you can easily imagine this on the deck of Titanic. As it was fashionable at that time, dress is wider on the hem, neckline is rather open v-type and decorative blouse or separate bodice is worn under. Wide belt accents the waist.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Naisella nilkkapituinen hame ja suurikauluksinen v\u00e4lj\u00e4 pusero. Arvelisin kuvan otetun kes\u00e4aikaan koska naisen puku on vaalea kuten kes\u00e4isin yleens\u00e4 tapana oli. Miehell\u00e4 kaksirivinen miesten puku ilman p\u00e4\u00e4llystakkia. Miehen hattu muistuttaa hieman knallia, mutta lieri n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 leve\u00e4mm\u00e4lt\u00e4. Miehen solmio ja pusero-yhdistelm\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6s erikoiselta.<\/p>\n

This young couple had themselves photographed at Atelier Borelius in Turku. Both are wearing typical 1910’s outfits. She has ankle length skirt and loose blouse with wide collar. I assume photo has been taken during summer because she is wearing light colours, like the habbit was at that time. He has double breasted suit without overcoat. His hat looks little bit like bowler, but the brim is wider and his tie and shirt combination looks quite unusual.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Nuori nainen kokovalkoisessa, Valokuvaamo Suomen valokuvassa. T\u00e4m\u00e4kin on tyypillinen 10-luvun puku, vy\u00f6t\u00e4r\u00f6lt\u00e4 istuva, alasp\u00e4in levenev\u00e4 helma ja l\u00f6ys\u00e4 pusero jossa vajaamittaiset hihat. Olen tehnyt itsellenikin samaan tyyliin pitsipuseron<\/a>. Er\u00e4\u00e4n l\u00e4hteen mukaan tyt\u00f6t alkoivat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 valkeaa rippipukua noin 1910-luvulla. T\u00e4m\u00e4 valokuva voi siis hyvin olla neitokaisen rippikuva. Valokuvaamo Suomi toimi Tampereella vuosina 1914-1927 ja sen kuvaajina toimivat Pauline Rasmussen<\/a> ja vuodesta 1920 l\u00e4htien h\u00e4nen poikansa Sigurd Rasmussen.<\/p>\n

Young lady in white, photo by Valokuvaamo Suomi. This is also very typical outfit from 1910’s. Skirt is tight around waist, hem wider at the ankles, blouse is loose with cropped sleeves. I have made similar lace blouse<\/a> to myself. According to some sources, girls started to wear white confirmation dresses in Finland around 1910’s. So this photo is possibly confirmation photo. Photography studio Valokuvaamo Suomi was working in Tampere during 1914-1927. Photographers were first Pauline Rasmussen<\/a> and after her 1920 on wards her son Sigurd Rasmussen.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Kuvan kolme nuorta naista saattoivat olla sisaruksia, serkuksia tai yst\u00e4vyksi\u00e4. 1900-luvun alussa oli tapana kuvauttaa itsens\u00e4 valokuvaamossa perheen tai yst\u00e4vien kanssa. Usein kuvista tehtiin postikortteja jotka saattoi l\u00e4hett\u00e4\u00e4 vaikkapa sukulaisille \u00a0toiseen maahan tai hyv\u00e4lle yst\u00e4v\u00e4lle. T\u00e4m\u00e4nkin kuvan taakse on painettu postikortti-viivoitus osoitetta varten, mutta sit\u00e4 ei ole koskaan l\u00e4hetetty. On my\u00f6s mahdollista ett\u00e4 tytt\u00f6 kokovalkoisissa on juuri p\u00e4\u00e4ssyt ripille ja rippikuvaan ovat p\u00e4\u00e4sseet mukaan h\u00e4nen sisaruksensa.<\/p>\n

Three young ladies in the photo can be sisters, cousins or just friends. In the early 1900’s it was popular to have yourself photographed with family or friends. Often the photos were made into post cards which you could send to your relatives in another country or to a good friend. Behind this photo is also printed the post card lines for address, but it was never sent. It is also possible that the girl in white has just had her confirmation and this is her confirmation photo with her sisters.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
