Takaisin kaupunkiin perhe muutti vasta syksyn tullen.

Huvilat kuuluivat mm. sellaisille merkkimiehille kuin varatuomari G.V. Cajanus, teollisuusneuvos K. Hiekka ja kauppaneuvos R. Haarla. Kaupunki osti Lepolan vuonna 1923. Kaksi huvilaa pakkolunastettiin kaupungille vuonna 1932 ja niiden paikalle rakennettiin Valtion lentokonetehdas. Viimeiset huvilat tulivat kaupungin haltuun 40-luvulla. Already in school I mean. Even though I always said my favourite in school was drawing, I secretly also liked history. Even though it was quite hard, you had to learn imporant dates and years and know the Finnish presidents by heart. Nowadays I’m more interested in local history, personal history and item history, than general history. At the same time when history is exciting, it’s also quite sad. When you have respect for old stuff and have vintage as a hobby, you also become a little mad because people have the constant need to destroy even the stuff that would be worth saving.

Because my readers seem to be interested in stories, I will tell you a true story from my hometown Tampere. Geocaching got me familiar with story of villa coast of Tampere, which does not exist anymore. In Härmälä and Rantaperkiö areas, quite near to the town center, was this row of summer villa’s, at the end of 1800’s and early 1900’s. These villa’s were built by the local jetset. Land belonged to Hatanpää Mansion, which was renting the land to these rich families. At that time, Härmälä was considered the countryside, even though it was only couple kilometers from the town center. So basically the rich families had their summer villa’s at countryside. They moved there in the beginning for June. Roads were bad so men travelled to town on steamboat that picked them up from their own piers, and returned them in the afternoon. Piers might have been even 100 meters long because the lake shore was rather shallow. At the end of the pier might have been little bathing hut, which was meant for changing clothes. Families moved back to town in the Autumn.

Enqvistin huvilan rakennutti J.V. Lepola, one of the villa’s was not on rental land, it belonged to the Mansion owners sister Agnes and her husband senator Wuorenheimo. All of the villa owners were important people and were socializing with the celebrities of the time. This meant that there was celebrities like actress Ida Aalberg, visiting the villa’s from time to time. Some of the villa’s changed owners in time. Big setback was already in 1913 when the Hatanpää Mansion ended up in financial issues due some bad loan guarantees and the owner Fedi Idman was forced to sell the mansion to the Town of Tampere. Rental agreements of the villa owners also changed hands on that deal. Town was trying to end the rental agreements as soon as possible and partially succeeded. Town bought Lepola in 1923. Two other villa’s were expropriated in 1932 and were torn down and replaced with State airplane factory. Town finally managed to get last villa’s in the 40’s. After that there has been schools, children’s home, children’s healthcare facilities and rental homes. Town allowed the buildings to deteriorate and they were mostly torn down in 50’s or 60’s. Except the one, built by Counselor Hiekka, which was torn down in the 80’s after it was destroyed by fire. Nowadays there is only one of these villa’s left, Lepola, which works as a daycare.

Remnants of these villa’s are mainly very small, like the base of the flag pole, base of the fountain, base stones of long piers (which can be seen during low waterlevel). Inside the forest you can find threes that used to belong to the villa’s or flowers that have escaped form their gardens, like blue aquilegia. I can imagine the kids on the beach, floating their little sail boats, ladies sitting under the parasols sipping icetea and husbands returning from their business with the steam boat. It is sad to think that fabulous piece of town history is lost forever.

NOTICE! Because these buildings don’t excist anymore, I could not use my own photos for this post.
