Suljetussa tilassa henkil\u00f6iden v\u00e4liset j\u00e4nnitteet, vaaratilanteet ja niit\u00e4 pakenemisen rajallisuus, teknologian vajavaisuus sek\u00e4 usein viel\u00e4 sotatilan aiheuttama hiuksianostattava j\u00e4nnitys ovat kiehtovaa katsottavaa. \nT\u00e4m\u00e4 leffa kuuluu oikeastaan t\u00e4ysin toisenlaiseen genreen mutta koska se tapahtuu suurimmaksi osaksi sukellusveneess\u00e4 otan sen nyt t\u00e4h\u00e4n mukaan. Vuonna 1959 filmattu Gary Grant-komedia kertoo ep\u00e4onnisesta sukellusveneest\u00e4 joka upotetaan sen ollessa satamassa ja korjataan sielt\u00e4 sun t\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 r\u00e4\u00e4vityin (lue: varastetuin) materiaalein. Lopputuloksena sukellusveneest\u00e4 tulee vaaleanpunainen ja kaiken huipuksi se joutuu evakuoimaan kyytiins\u00e4 liudan naisia, lapsia ja vuohen. \nWould you believe if I told you that I have peculiar movie passion? I like many different styles in movies, but even many of my friends don’t believe me when I tell them I like submarine-movies. In closed space the tensions between people, dangerous situations and the limitations on escaping them, limitations of technology and often also the wartime are hair-raisingly exciting and fascinating to watch. Quite often the captain is problematic character with his own trauma or peculiarities. Fears and expectations of the crew are exxaggerated in tight, almost claustrofobicly small space where even the tiniest technological failure or accident can cause the death of individual or whole crew. I will now introduce you some of my favourites in random order.<\/p>\n

\nLegendary movie about the strugle for life of german U-96 submarine during Second World War in Atlantic. Captain is cynical and fed up with the war, but still trying to keep his crew alive. Even after many close calls and escapes from death, it isn’t victorious movie about heroes in the end. I have seen it several times and the surprising ending makes me cry every time.<\/p>\n

\nStarred by Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, this is a imaginary story of russian submarine which tries to defect to the west in 1984. Cat & mouse race on the Atlantic is rather slow in the beginning but the tension evolves when the story moves forward. What are the true intensions of captain Ramius? Which great power wins and gets the submarine and it’s crew, dead or alive?<\/p>\n

\nThis movies is actually in totally different genre but I add it here because it happenes mostly in the sub. Starring Gary Grant and filmed in 1959 it tells a story about misfortunate submarine that gets sunk while in dock and gets fixed with material mostly stolen from here and there. As a result the submarine ends up being pink and is forced to evacuate and transport some women, children and a goat. Quite good comedy from Hollywood’s golden age.<\/p>\n

\nHeartstopping story, based on true events, about russian nuclear submarine’s reactor failure and crew’s brave but dangerous fight against raising radiation. Old and new captain fight the mental battle of the true power on the ship while party representative is trying to decide on which side he want’s to be in the end. Maiden voyage of the ship ends up with several crew member deaths. During peace time Soviet Union doesn’t credit them heroes even though they saved the lives of their crew mates with their own courage. Special thanks goes to the make up artists, especially the old age make ups of Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford, in the end of the movie are very realistic, compared to many other big budjet movies.<\/p>\n
