New decade brought lots of new inventions: tv’s, refridgerators, vacuum cleaners and electric stoves. Tv-show “I love Lucy” was describing the ideal family and became a hit overnight. Consuming became new hobby when all these new products came to ease up our lives. Continuous parties like barbeque’s, coctail-parties, and other events required fashionable outfits and there was outfit for every occassion. Waistline was again very small and petticoats came back. For day women had maybe twinset and pleated skirt, kneelength dress with wide skirt or womens suit made of wool. In the evening it was coctaildress or full length eveningdress. Colours finally came back and they were plenty. Fabrics were either plain colour or various geometric forms or tweed and various prints. Materials were convenient for each use: comfy and warm wool or knits, thin cotton for summer, lace and tulle, pleated silks and stiff taffetas for evening.

Charles Jourdan created stiletto heels in 1951 and after that everybody wanted to have as thin and as high heels as possible. Shoes needed to match the outfit perfectly so they came in all kinds of colours, materials and with extravagant decorations. Roger Vivier was challenging ordinary shoe designing and his colourful shoes became popular amongs moviestars. Teenage-fasnion was a new idea. Movies targeted to young people became a hit and also created new trends: Converse tennis shoes, leather jackets, jeans, fluffy knits, ponytails and ballerina shoes.

Conservative was the word for mens clothing. After bright colours of the 40’s, this decade made mens suits more traditional with muted colours like dark blue, brown and gray. Trousers and jackets were more fitted than before. They had small lapels and 2 or 4 buttons. Young men soon started rebelling this conservative style. Hawaian shirts, cabana-suits and western-style were popular for casual wear. Original Hawaian shirts were made in Hawaii and they had wooden buttons. Cabana-set consisted of short sleeved shirt and shorts with rubberband waist. T-shirt was originally designed for soldiers in 40’s but it became popular and already in the 50’s it was in almost every man’s wardrobe.

Hair dye had already developed so much that it was easy to do at home. Colour selection was pretty wide allthough blonde was still the most popular, in platinum and honey shades. Most copied styles were taken from celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. No-one wanted straight hair. You could have small curls, large curles, asymmetrical curls, poodle-style a la Lucille Ball or just ponytail or bun.

It was more important to match your make up to your dress or accessories than was your dress perfectly fitting. New make up collections were published twice a year and tan became popular again. Again many movie start showed the way. Almond shaped eye was most adored and wanted. Turqoise eye shadow with orange lipstic was popular combination. Eye make up was made with two shades, light cream on upper eye lid and darker shadow on the crease. Blush wasn’t very popular anymore but if it was used, it was in the shades of natural blush. Lips were supposed to look full and lucious. If they weren’t naturally full, they were drawn fuller over all. Popular lipstick shades were bright red but shades went lighter towards the end of the decade. Because of the bright lipstick colour, lips were lined with darker lipliner to create more natural effect and of course liner was blended very carefully with the lipstick shade. Mascara was either black, brown or blue. Faux lashes were still used but they weren’t that long anymore than in the 40’s. Eyebrows needed to have very distinctive form of a wing and they were shaped and drawn into that form if needed. Miss Universe in 1952 was young finnish woman Armi Kuusela. She was beauty idol for many finnish girl at the time.

Designers of the decade
Christian Dior
Hubert de Givency
Louis Feraud
Valentino

Idols of the decade
Marilyn Monroe
Audrey Hepburn
Brigitte Bardot
Grace Kelly
Sophia Loren
Elizabeth Taylor
Armi Kuusela
Doris Day
Jack Lemmon
Elvis Presley
Frank Sinatra
Tony Curtis
Montgomery Clift
Gene Kelly

Lupasin tämän 50-luvun pukuhistoria-postauksen jo joskus kesällä mutta kiirettä on pitänyt.
