Aika harvoin <\/span>tulee aloitettua ihan uutta harrastusta. Nyt p\u00e4\u00e4timme kuitenkin is\u00e4nn\u00e4n kanssa aloittaa yhteisen uuden harrasteen jossa yhdess\u00e4 puuhaten saisi my\u00f6s hieman liikuntoa ja raitista ilmaa. Olin tutustunut aiheeseen ensimm\u00e4ist\u00e4 kertaa jo parisen vuotta sitten, mutta kun luin Ellin blogista lis\u00e4\u00e4<\/a> p\u00e4\u00e4tin ottaa kunnolla selv\u00e4\u00e4.

Geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ily (<\/span>engl. geocaching<\/span>)<\/span> on maailmanlaajuinen harrastus jossa satelliittipaikantimen avulla etsit\u00e4\u00e4n ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6st\u00e4 pieni\u00e4 tai suurempia muiden k\u00e4tk\u00f6ily-harrastajien<\/span> piilottamia k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4. K\u00e4tk\u00f6 on muovirasia joka sis\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4tk\u00f6login, kyn\u00e4n, infoa geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilys<\/span>t\u00e4 ja mahdollisesti pieni\u00e4 vaihtotavaroita tai matkustavia geo-esineit\u00e4. Pienimmill\u00e4\u00e4n k\u00e4tk\u00f6 on filmipurkkia pienempi, suurimmillaan ehk\u00e4 muovisen j\u00e4\u00e4tel\u00f6rasian kokoinen. Lokiin kirjataan p\u00e4iv\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 ja l\u00f6yt\u00e4j\u00e4n nimimerkki. Vaihtotavarat ovat yleens\u00e4 lapsille tarkoitettuja pieni\u00e4 leluja tai muovifiguureita. Olemme harrastaneet <\/span>geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ily\u00e4 aktiivisesti nyt reilun viikon ja l\u00f6ydettyj\u00e4 k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 on kertynyt jo noin kolmisenkymment\u00e4. Hallussamme on yksi geokolikko ja kaksi tr<\/span>avel <\/span>bugia jotka odottavat p\u00e4\u00e4sy\u00e4 uusiin k\u00e4tk\u00f6ihin. Kolikoiden ja matkalaisten omistajat voivat asettaa niille teht\u00e4vi\u00e4 joiden suorittamisessa esineiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4jien pit\u00e4\u00e4 avustaa. Yksi matkalainen haluaa tulla kuvatuksi j\u00e4\u00e4tel\u00f6\u00e4 sy\u00f6den, toinen haluaa p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 k\u00e4tk\u00f6ille kalastusvesien tai uimarantojen l\u00e4heisyyteen ja geokolikko kulkee kauhuleffa-fanien kyydiss\u00e4 uusille k\u00e4tk\u00f6ille.<\/span>

Meit\u00e4 varoitettiin<\/span> ett\u00e4 k\u00e4tk\u00f6ily vie menness\u00e4\u00e4n eik\u00e4 paluuta ole. Olemmekin t\u00e4ss\u00e4 viikon aikana tulleet huomaamaan ett\u00e4 tunti jos toinenkin kuluu tietokoneen \u00e4<\/span>\u00e4rell\u00e4 uusiin k\u00e4tk\u00f6ihin tutustuen, mysteeri-k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 ratkoen ja koordinaatteja naviin sy\u00f6tellen. Hauskinta kuitenkin on itse k\u00e4tk\u00f6n etsiminen. Koordinaatit ohjaavat k\u00e4tk\u00f6n l\u00e4helle, mutta itse k\u00e4tk\u00f6n l\u00f6yt\u00e4minen voi olla v\u00e4lill\u00e4 hyvinkin haastavaa. Toiset k\u00e4tk\u00f6t l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t helposti, mutta toisten etsimiseen saattaa <\/span>joutua uhraamaan jopa useamman p\u00e4iv\u00e4n. Oma lukunsa ovat ns. mu<\/span>lti-k\u00e4tk\u00f6t ja mysteeri-k\u00e4tk\u00f6t joiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4miseksi saattaa joutua ratkomaan pulmia tai arvoituksia ja tekem\u00e4\u00e4n kinkkisi\u00e4kin laskuteht\u00e4vi\u00e4. K\u00e4tk\u00f6-silm\u00e4 kuitenkin kehittyy kokoajan ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6st\u00e4 oppii huomaamaan potentiaaliset k\u00e4tk\u00f6paikat suhteellisen nopeasti. Etsitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 silti riitt\u00e4\u00e4 sill\u00e4 yksin Tampereella on k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 yli 260 ja lis\u00e4\u00e4 rekister\u00f6id\u00e4\u00e4n jatkuvasti. <\/span>Koko Suomessa k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 on jo l\u00e4hes 10 000.<\/span> K\u00e4tk\u00f6jen sijainnit taas voivat olla mit\u00e4 hyv\u00e4ns\u00e4 kaupungin keskustasta er\u00e4maahan. K\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 voi l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4<\/span> pienilt\u00e4kin paikkakunnilta, mutta k\u00e4tk\u00f6tilastoa johtavat itseoikeutetusti suuret kaupungit kuten Helsinki, Espoo ja Turku.<\/span>

K\u00e4tk\u00f6ily saattaa<\/span> \u00e4kkiselt\u00e4\u00e4n tuntua kovin yksin\u00e4iselt\u00e4 harrastukselta mutta sit\u00e4 se todellakaan ole. Yksi oleellinen piirre on, ett\u00e4 olipa k\u00e4tk\u00f6n piilopaikka mik\u00e4 hyv\u00e4ns\u00e4, se on pyritt\u00e4v\u00e4 etsim\u00e4\u00e4n ja saamaan esiin piilostaan niin ett\u00e4 muut ihmiset eiv\u00e4t huomaa. Hyvin nopeasti <\/span>oppii tunnistamaan geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4n julkisella paikalla. Tyypillisi\u00e4 piirteit\u00e4 ovat p\u00e4lyily ja vilkuilu, n\u00e4enn\u00e4isesti ep\u00e4kiinnostavan paikan perinpohjainen tutkiminen, k\u00e4vely edestakaisin pienell\u00e4 alueella, puskien nuuskiminen, kivien k\u00e4\u00e4ntely, navin tai puhelimen n\u00e4pyttely, keng\u00e4nnauhojen solmiminen useammin kuin on tarpeellista jne. Geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4 tunnistaa toisen geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4n ja etenkin kaupunkik\u00e4tk\u00f6ll\u00e4 tois<\/span>een k\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4\u00e4n t\u00f6rm\u00e4\u00e4minen ei ole ollenkaan harvinaista. Jos kiinnostuit<\/span> k\u00e4tk\u00f6ilyst\u00e4 voit tutustua aiheeseen paremmin kotimaisella geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilysivulla<\/a> sek\u00e4 virallisella kansainv\u00e4lisell\u00e4 geocaching-sivustolla<\/a>. Varoituksen sana kuitenkin on paikallaan. Kun k\u00e4tk\u00f6ily vie menness\u00e4\u00e4n se ei ole ilmainen harrastus, kuten ehk\u00e4 voisi luulla. Vaikka k\u00e4tk\u00f6ily\u00e4 voi jonkin verran harrastaa my\u00f6s ilman navigaattoria (letterboxing<\/a>)<\/span>, on se kuitenkin tosik\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4n must-varuste. Lis\u00e4tarvikkeita ovat vedenkest\u00e4v\u00e4 kyn\u00e4, vedenkest\u00e4v\u00e4 muistilehti\u00f6, taskula<\/span>mppu, suojahanskat, silika-pussit, minigrip-pussit, pienet vaihtotavarat, k\u00e4tk\u00f6-rasiat, geo-kolikot ja travel bugit. Kun alkaa itse v\u00e4s\u00e4ill\u00e4 k\u00e4tk\u00f6j\u00e4 ja laittaa liikkeelle kolikoita tai matkalaisia saa niihin kulumaan satoja euroja ihan helposti. Hienoimmat ja harvinaisimmat kolikot voivat maksaa useita kymppej\u00e4 kappaleelta. K\u00e4tk\u00f6ily voi olla my\u00f6s vaarallinen harrastus sill\u00e4 jotkut k\u00e4tk\u00f6t voivat vaatia fyysist\u00e4 ponnistusta<\/span> tai akrobatiaa tai saattavat olla sijainniltaan hankalakulkuisessa maastossa. <\/span>Onpa Helsingin suunnalla jopa k\u00e4tk\u00f6 jolle p\u00e4\u00e4seminen vaatii itsens\u00e4 asettamista v\u00e4litt\u00f6m\u00e4\u00e4n hengenvaaraan. Harrastuksen salamyhk\u00e4isen luonteen vuoksi k\u00e4tk\u00f6ilij\u00e4 saattaa my\u00f6s joutua tekemisiin virkavallan kanssa. Vain viikko harrastuksen aloittamisesta jouduimme ensimm\u00e4isen kerran tekemisiin poliisin kanssa. Olimme l\u00e4hteneet suuren liikerakennuksen pihasta my\u00f6h\u00e4\u00e4n illalla tyhji\u00e4 pahvilaatikoita (puhdas sattuma)<\/span> auton takapenkill\u00e4. Joku silminn\u00e4kij\u00e4 oli tehnyt ilmoituksen ep\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4isest\u00e4 liikehdinn\u00e4st\u00e4 ja piankos siniset vilkkuvalot vaativat meit\u00e4 pys\u00e4htym\u00e4\u00e4n. Mukana kulkeva geok\u00e4tk\u00f6ilyn info-lappu auttoi selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n mit\u00e4 olimme puuhaamassa, mutta luonnollisesti henkil\u00f6llisyytemme ja auton rekisteri<\/span>tiedot tarkastettiin ennenkuin p\u00e4\u00e4simme jatkamaan matkaa. Ilmeisesti alueella oli jotain muutakin h\u00e4m\u00e4r\u00e4porukkaa joilla ei ollut ihan yht\u00e4 puhtaat jauhot pussissa kuin meill\u00e4. Very rarely<\/span> you get to start new hobby. Now me and my darling dec<\/span>ided to start one together. The kind that would give us something to do together and would also take us outdoors. I first heard about this a couple of years ago. But when I read about it in Elli’s blog<\/a> (in finnish)<\/span>, I decided to learn more. <\/span><\/p>\n

Geocaching is<\/span> worldwide hobby. With the assistance of a satellite navigator <\/span>you are able to search for small or larger caches that are hidden by other geocachers. In the cache you will find a logbook, a pencil, info about geocaching, possibly small gifts and\/or geo-items. The smallest caches can be smaller than camerafilm container whilst the biggest can be about 1-1,5 litre plastic container. When you find a cache you mark the date and your name on the logbook. Gifts are usually small toys or plastic figurines for kids. They can be also keyrings, foreign currency or like we found in one cache, screws =) Geo-items are either geocoins or travel bugs, which you don’t get for your own. Travellers are going from cache to cache, from person to person. <\/span><\/p>\n

We’ve been<\/span> geocaching now actively about 1,5 weeks and found about 30 caches. We hold at the moment one geocoin and two travel bugs. Owners can put tasks for these tra<\/span>vellers and every person who finds them must try to help to perform the task. One travel bug wants to be in photos while eating ice cream, another wants to travel to caches near fishing areas or swimming beaches. Geocoin wants to travel to new caches with horror movie-fans.<\/p>\n

<\/span>People warned<\/span> us about caching, there is no return. Since we started it we have come to notice that it’s not a few minutes we spend on our computers by getting to know new caches, solving puzzles and putting co-ordinates on our navigator, but hours. But the fun part is to find the exact cache. Co-ordinates lead to near the cache but finding it might be sometimes very challenging. Some ca<\/span>ches are easy to find, some might take several days. So-called multi-caches and puzzle-caches are a chapter of their own. You might have to solve puzzles or make tricky calculations before you get the final co-ordinates. Geocahing-eye developes rather rapidly though and you learn to notice potential places for a cache. There is still lot to search. In Finland alone there are almost 10 000 caches. Locations can be anywhere from a city center to the wilderness. You can find caches from small villages but on the top of the statistics are big cities.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Caching might<\/span> seem like a rather lonely hobby, but it isn’t so. One promin<\/span>ent feature is that what ever the location of the cache might be, you must search it and retrieve it from its hidden place without others noticing. Rather soon you learn to notice other cachers in public. Typical features are nosing around, checking random locations, walking up and down on the street, snooping around bushes, turning stones around, fiddling with your navi or phone, tieing your shoelaces more than necessary etc. Geocacher recognises other geocacher and it is not very rare to bump into one, especially in cities. Quite often they do searching together and exchange experiences and tips. Geocachers also arrange meetings.<\/p>\n

When caching takes you, it is not the free hobby, as it may seem. Even though you can do caching without navi (letterboxing<\/a>)<\/span> it is an essential tool for the true-cacher. Additional equipment are waterproof pen or pencil, waterproof notebook, torch, protective gloves, silica-bags, resealable bags, small gifts, cache-boxes, geocoins and travelbugs. When you start making your own caches or travelbugs you quite easily can use hundreds of euros. Fine and rare geocoins can cost 20-30 euros each. Caching can be also dangerous hobby. Some caches require good physics, acrobatic movements or terrain can be difficult to go to. And there is even one cache in Helsinki where you have to put yourself in immediate risk of death. Due to the sneaky character this hobby might also take you in the hands of authorities. Only week after we started geocaching we had our first encounter with the police. We were looking for a cache on the yard of large shop-building, late in the evening. We left the premises by car and happened to have (totally coincedentally)<\/span> large empty boxes on the backseat of our car. Didn’t take long when flashy blue lights demanded us to stop. Geocache-info note we had on us helped to explain what we were doing, but ofcourse they checked our identities and car information before they let us go. Apparently there was other suspicious people in the area they were looking for. So you might want to think twice before you let it get you.
