<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nAutumn has arrived, which means the hobbycraft courses have started and I have entered my fluffy national costume and traditional clothing bubble. It’s been lovely to chat with likeminded people and learn new things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Spring when I was browsing in the social media of Swedish national costume professional, I encountered fun accessories called kavelfrans muddar. They are short wristwarmers\/cuffs with very fluffy pompom-fringe. Like so many things in the past, these have also travelled all the way from Sweden to Finland. In some of the swedish-speaking coastal towns, you might still see some of these in use, especially on those who like to wear national costumes. Originally these wristwarmers were worn by both, men and women. I think these are just so cute, I just had to make a pair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to extant historical cuffs, they were intarsia crochet and the floofy trim was made with variation of finger looping. Usually it takes two people to make finger loop fringe, however you can also make it with hairpin loom or cardboard ruler. It’s easy to crochet the fringes together simultaneously while wrapping wool fringes around the hairpin loom or piece of cardboard. Or optionally you can just stitch them together with needle and thread. So there is many ways of making this fringe. Cuffs are finished by sewing the fringe on the edge of the cuffs and cutting the fringe loops open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fringes on the museum items are very tightly made, they almost look solid. Lot of time, effort and yarn has been used. I also think that in some of them there might have been a different technique in use, because some of them have quite sharp and focused patterns in them. Mine didn’t turn out as tight, however they are still very cute, and warm. Instead of intarsia crochet, I used multicoloured yarn, which creates patterns of it’s own. Optionally the cuff can be made by knitting or even by sewing it from fabric. Cuffs made from non-elastic materials, you have to include method of closure, for easy dressing and taking off.<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/strong>Finished fringe is sewn on to the cuff with the carboard. Fringes are cut open portion by portion while the sewing progresses. Wool yarn is quite slippery, so perhaps fringe crocheted with linen thread would be a bit sturdier. Fringes tend to come off of the crochet if pulled gently.<\/strong>
