Olen pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n jo suunnitellut tekev\u00e4ni puutarhaesiliinan. Kun en k\u00e4yt\u00e4 juurikaan housuja ja puutarhahommat hoituu p\u00e4\u00e4asin hameessa\/mekossa, niin olen kaivannut esiliinaa, joka suojaisi suurimmaksi osaksi helman etuosan likaantumiselta. Meinasin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4h\u00e4n pellavamekosta j\u00e4\u00e4nytt\u00e4 harmaata pellavaa, mutta se tulikin l\u00e4hes kokonaan k\u00e4ytetyksi pellavaiseen alushameeseen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onneksi kuitenkaan t\u00e4st\u00e4 taloudesta eiv\u00e4t kankaat lopu kesken. Ja lis\u00e4\u00e4 tuntuu tulevan v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ovista ja ikkunoista. No ei sent\u00e4\u00e4n, mutta kun kohdalle osuus sopiva (vintage)l\u00f6yt\u00f6 niin en j\u00e4t\u00e4 sit\u00e4 hankkimatta. Taannoin k\u00e4ym\u00e4st\u00e4ni asunnon tyhjennysmyynnist\u00e4 l\u00f6ysin t\u00e4m\u00e4n (puoli?)pellavaisen lakanan. Se vaikuttaa olevan t\u00e4ysin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4t\u00f6n, lienee tehty kapioiksi, mutta ehk\u00e4 karkeutensa vuoksi j\u00e4\u00e4nyt k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4. Kangas saattaa olla k\u00e4sin kudottu, mutta en mene vannomaan. P\u00e4ist\u00e4reit\u00e4 siin\u00e4 kuitenkin on sen verran ett\u00e4 aika krouvia materiaalia. Ajattelin ett\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4p\u00e4 se olis juuri sopivaa materiaalia puutarhaessuun. Ja ei kun tuumasta toimeen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varsinaista kaavaa t\u00e4h\u00e4n ei ole, mutta kaikki kappaleet ovat joko suorakaiteen tai neli\u00f6n muotoisia:

Mittoja voi soveltaa omiin mittoihin ja tarpeen mukaan poistamalla tai lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 leveyteen ja pituuteen. Lakana oli ommeltu kahdesta kapeasta kangaspalasta joten keskell\u00e4 on sauma. K\u00e4ytin t\u00e4t\u00e4 ja muita lakanan ominaisuuksia hy\u00f6dyksi ja valmiin leve\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4rmeen k\u00e4ytin sellaisenaan helmaan ja valmiin kapean p\u00e4\u00e4rmeen k\u00e4ytin miehustan yl\u00e4reunaan ja taskunsuuhun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  4. Taita vy\u00f6t\u00e4r\u00f6kaitaleiden saumanvarat nurjalle ja neulaa ne paikoilleen tarkasti vastaamaan toisiaan. Miehustapalan saumanvarat j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t niiden v\u00e4liin piiloon. Neulaa solmimisnauhat kaitaleen p\u00e4iden sis\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Tikkaa kappaleet p\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 yhteen alkaen p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 niin ett\u00e4 solmimisnauha kiinnittyy samalla ja lopeta ommel kaitaleen toisessa p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 samalla tavoin niin ett\u00e4 solmimisnauha kiinnittyy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Neulaa olkain miehustan yl\u00e4reunaan niin ett\u00e4 toinen p\u00e4\u00e4 tulee vasempaan reunaan ja toinen p\u00e4\u00e4 oikeaan. Olkain muodostaa ison lenkin. Solmimisnauhat pujotetaan sel\u00e4ss\u00e4 olkainnauhan l\u00e4pi, jolloin ne pit\u00e4v\u00e4t olkaimet paikoillaan. Tarkista ett\u00e4 olkain on riitt\u00e4v\u00e4n napakka ja lyhenn\u00e4 tarvittaessa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Taita taskun saumanvarat nurjalle ja silit\u00e4 ne paikoilleen. Neulaa tasku haluttuun kohtaan ja tikkaa se p\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 paikoilleen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Essusta tuli tosi hauska ja kangas antaa uutuuttaan melko muhkean ilmeen. Tosin solmimisnauhat tuntuvat hirmu j\u00e4ykilt\u00e4. Saatan joutua vaihtamaan ne pehme\u00e4mpiin, helpommin solmittaviin kaitaleisiin, vaikka kangas kyll\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 jonkin verran pehmenee. Lakanan nimikointi muodostaa hauskan koristeen helmaan, vaikka se onkin yl\u00f6salaisin, mutta en anna sen h\u00e4irit\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n

    I\u2019ve been planning to make a gardening apron for quite some time now. Since I rarely wear pants and do most of my gardening in a skirt or dress, I\u2019ve been wanting an apron that would protect most of the front of my skirt from getting dirty. I was going to use the leftover gray linen from a linen dress for this, but I ended up using almost all of it for a linen petticoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fortunately, though, we\u2019re not running out of fabric in this household. And it seems that more keeps coming in through the doors and windows. Well, not literally, but when I come across a suitable (vintage) find, I can\u2019t resist picking it up. At a house clearance sale I visited recently, I found this (half?) linen sheet. It appears to be completely unused; it was probably made for bridal trousseau, but perhaps never used because of it’s rough texture. The fabric might be hand-woven, but I wouldn\u2019t swear to it. There are some hard splinter-like shives, leftovers from turning flax into yarn, so it feels quite a rugged material. I thought this would be just the right material for a garden apron. And so, I put my plan into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is no specific pattern for this, but all the pieces are either rectangular or square:
    1 front piece, approx. 75 x 150 cm (full width of the fabric)
    1 bodice piece, approx. 30 x 30 cm
    2 waistband pieces, approx. 6 x 60 cm
    1 shoulder strap (in one piece), approx. 6×100 cm
    2 tie straps, approx. 6×60 cm
    1 pocket, approx. 15×20 cm

    You can adjust the measurements to fit your own dimensions by adding or subtracting from the width and length as needed. The sheet was sewn from two narrow pieces of fabric, so there is a seam in the middle. I took advantage of this and other features of the sheet: I used the finished wide hem as-is for the hem of the apron, and I used the finished narrow hem for the top edge of the bodice and the pocket opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Sew hemstitch along the edges of the hem, bodice, tie strings, and shoulder straps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Gather the top edge of the hem and pin it to the waistband so that the hem lies between the two waistband pieces. Make sure the center points of the waistband and the hem line up. After stitching, turn the waistband so that the seam allowances are on the inside, and press the seam and the gathers in the hem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Pin the bodice piece to the top edge of the waistband with right sides together, but only to one of the waistbands, and sew.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Fold the seam allowances of the waistband pieces to the inside and pin them in place precisely so they match up. The seam allowances of the bodice piece will be hidden between them. Pin the waist ties inside the ends of the waistband.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Topstitch the waistband pieces together, starting at one end so that the tie strap is secured at the same time, and finish the stitch at the other end of the waistband in the same way so that the tie is secured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Pin the shoulder strap to the top edge of the bodice so that one end is on the left side and the other on the right. The shoulder strap forms a large loop. Thread the waist ties through the shoulder strap at the back, which will hold the straps in place. Check that the shoulder strap is tight enough and shorten it if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Fold the pocket seam allowances to the wrong side and press them in place. Pin the pocket to the desired location and topstitch in place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The sheet turned out really cute, and the fabric has a pretty full look because it\u2019s new. That said, the ties feel really stiff. I might have to replace them with softer, easier-to-tie strips, even though the fabric does soften up a bit with use. The monogram on the sheet makes for a fun decoration on the hem, even though it\u2019s upside down, but I\u2019m not going to let that bother me.<\/p>\n\n\n
