Olen siirtynyt kultaiselle kaudelle. Arvasin ett\u00e4 n\u00e4in tulisi k\u00e4ym\u00e4\u00e4n, kun antaa pikkusormen niin koko k\u00e4si menee. Kirjansidontakurssilla on sellainen laite jota kutsun nimell\u00e4 “kultauskone”. Sill\u00e4 olen muutamia kertoja kullannut kirjankansia erilaisin kirjasimin. Se on hidasta, pikkutarkkaa puuhaa, eik\u00e4 sit\u00e4 voi tehd\u00e4 kotona. Mutta opettajamme kertoikin toisenlaisesta kultausmenetelm\u00e4st\u00e4 ja se olikin sitten menoa. Kultauskone k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4mp\u00f6\u00e4 kullan siirt\u00e4miseen kirjankanteen tai nahkaan. Kultafoliota voi kuitenkin kiinnitt\u00e4\u00e4 ihan liimalla, ilman l\u00e4mp\u00f6\u00e4. Lopputulos on rouheampi, eik\u00e4 mitenk\u00e4\u00e4n tarkkareunainen. Se kuitenkin soveltuu k\u00e4sin tehtyihin muistikirjoihin ja muuhun rustiikkisempaan puuhaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e4it\u00e4 kullattuja muistikirjoja onkin syntynyt jo muutama. Sidonta on helppo ja melko nopea valmistaa ja siihen voi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 vanhoja kauniita kirjankansia. L\u00f6ysin joskus vuosia sitten kirppikselt\u00e4 kirjan, jossa oli todella ep\u00e4tavallisen upeat kannet, mutta turkasen kirppismyyj\u00e4 oli kiinnitt\u00e4nyt tarrahintalapun kanteen. Irrotettaessa se tietenkin repi hauraan vanhan paperin rikki. Ja hintalappu oli ehtinyt olla kannessa kahdesti, p\u00e4\u00e4tellen siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 kannessa oli jo ennest\u00e4\u00e4n yksi repe\u00e4m\u00e4. I\u2019ve entered a golden era. I knew this would happen, once you give the little finger, you end up going whole arm in. In the bookbinding class, there\u2019s a device I call the \u201cgilding machine.\u201d I\u2019ve used it a few times to gild book covers with different fonts. It\u2019s slow, meticulous work, and you can\u2019t do it at home. But our teacher told us about a different gilding method, and that\u2019s when things really took off. The gilding machine uses heat to transfer the gold from the foil on to the book cover or leather. However, you can attach gold foil with just glue, without heat. The result is rougher and not precise. It\u2019s still suitable for handmade notebooks and other more rustic projects, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve actually made a couple of these gilded notebooks already. The binding is easy and fairly quick to make, and you can reuse old pretty book covers for it. Years ago, I found a book at a flea market that had truly stunning covers, but the flea market vendor had stuck a price tag sticker right on the cover. When I peeled it off, it naturally tore the fragile old paper. And the price tag had been on the cover twice, judging by the fact that there was already one tear in the cover. But no worries, I patched it up with gold foil. So this was a sort of bookbinding kintsugi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These gilded notebooks turned out so lovely I would just want to gild everything. What should I gild next?<\/p>\n\n\n
