I also convinced my friend to come along, because it\u2019s always more fun with two people, and I know my husband isn\u2019t exactly thrilled about these kinds of trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I had a shopping list for the event, and it was very short: a heat pen for gilding and wool yarn for dyeing. I couldn\u2019t find the heat pen, but I did find wool yarn\u2014and boy, what a stall it was in. My attention was drawn to the special fibers intended for spinning at the Tilkkutytt\u00f6’s stall \u2014 fibers like milk, yak, silk, cashmere, camel and so on. I haven\u2019t had time to spin anything in a while, but I couldn\u2019t resist buying some of the more unusual fibers for testin. Tilkkutytt\u00f6 gave me a lot of information about these fibers. The yak lives in the mountain regions of Central Asia; the main countries where it is raised are Mongolia, China, Nepal, India (northern parts), and Tibet. In their traditional habitats, yaks are often kept in semi-free-range conditions by nomadic herders, and production is small-scale. They are used as draft animals and for agricultural work, but Tilkkutytt\u00f6 didn’t know if there are breeders specializing in wool production or if the wool is obtained only alongside working and milk production. The yak sheds its coat in the spring, at which time the fiber can be collected by combing and hand-picking. The fine undercoat and coarse outer coat are separated, sorted, and cleaned for spinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The largest producers of milk fiber are Germany, China, and Italy. The method was patented sometime in the 1930s, but the method currently in use is more environmentally friendly than the original. Due to availability and cost, the raw material is primarily cow\u2019s milk, specifically batches unfit for human consumption, as well as production byproducts, such as cheese-making residues. Sheep\u2019s and goat\u2019s milk can also be used, but this is likely minimal.
Casein is separated from the milk by coagulation using an enzyme or acid. The casein is then dried into a powder, which is then dissolved into a pulp. The pulp is extruded through nozzles into fibers and hardened. At some stage of the wet spinning process, the fiber may be slightly crimped to increase its elasticity. Finally, the fiber is washed, dried, and finished, for example by cutting it to the desired length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Camel hair is the undercoat of the two-humped camel. Major producing countries include Mongolia, China, Iran, and Afghanistan. Like yaks, camels also lead at least a partially nomadic lifestyle, serving as pack animals and producers of milk and fiber. Camels shed their winter coat in the spring, at which time it is combed or collected. The coarse outer coat is set aside for other uses, while the fine undercoat is suitable for spinning.
The term \u201cbaby\u201d is not official. It may refer to the hair obtained from a young animal\u2019s first shedding or, more broadly, to the hair of a camel under one year of age. What matters is the fineness of the fiber, which should be approximately 16\u201319 microns in \u201cbaby\u201d quality. (=the thickness of a single fiber) In adult camels, it is typically about 20\u201324 microns.
