There was several old pricelists and photos. However the loveliest finds were small fabric samples, which always make my heart skip a beat. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n
Museaalisesti t\u00e4m\u00e4 kokoelma ei ole erityisen arvokas sill\u00e4 l\u00e4hes tulkoon kaikki kokoelman pukujen ohjeet ja kaavat ovat edelleen hyvin saatavissa. Jokaisella kansallispukuvulla on ns. koti. Se tarkoittaa sit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 kyseinen taho, koti, huolehtii siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 puvun ohjeita, kaavoja ja materiaaleja on saatavilla. Niit\u00e4 ei voi hankkia mist\u00e4\u00e4n muualta kuin kyseisen puvun kodista. T\u00e4st\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4n kokoelman lahjoittajakaan ei n\u00e4ill\u00e4 voinut mit\u00e4\u00e4n tehd\u00e4. Ne ovat olleet yhden ihmisen ty\u00f6v\u00e4line ja sellaisenaan my\u00f6s melko puutteellinen. Joistakin puvuista l\u00f6ytyy nimitt\u00e4in pelkk\u00e4 tykkimyssyn kirjontakuvio tai pelk\u00e4t ompeluohjeet, ei kaavoja lainkaan. Minullakaan ei ole n\u00e4ihin mit\u00e4\u00e4n tekij\u00e4noikeuksia eik\u00e4 myyntioikeuksia, enk\u00e4 voi n\u00e4it\u00e4 kopioida muiden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
T\u00e4m\u00e4 kokoelma on kuitenkin minulle henkil\u00f6kohtaisesti, sek\u00e4 nykyiselle kotipaikkakunnalleni paljon sit\u00e4 arvokkaampi. T\u00e4st\u00e4 laatikosta nimitt\u00e4in l\u00f6ytyiv\u00e4t Kiikoisten puvun ohjeet, joiden on luultu jo h\u00e4vinneen j\u00e4ljett\u00f6miin. Kiikoisten kansallispuvun koti on Kiikoisten Nuorisoseura, mutta pukua ei ole vuosiin voinut valmistaa sill\u00e4 ohjeet ovat olleet kadoksissa. Kankaaseen tarvittavia lankojakaan ei en\u00e4\u00e4 mist\u00e4\u00e4n saa sill\u00e4 niiden myynti ja valmistus on loppunut. Kokoelman ehk\u00e4 parasta antia ovatkin varsinaisten ohjeiden lis\u00e4ksi pienet kankaiden mallitilkut, pitsin ja nauhan p\u00e4tk\u00e4t sek\u00e4 k\u00e4sin kirjoitetut muistilaput ja ohjeet joita n\u00e4iden edellinen, jo 20 vuotta sitten el\u00e4k\u00f6itynyt k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4 on ohjeisiin liitt\u00e4nyt. Jo pelk\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n luetteloimalla kokoelman puvut ja niiden osat, olen oppinut kansallispuvuista paljon. Olen todella otettu ja ylpe\u00e4 siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 n\u00e4m\u00e4 luovutettiin haltuuni ja saan niit\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 oppimiseen ja itselleni pukujen valmistukseen. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nSometimes you encounter such “once in a lifetime” moments that you can hardly believe they are real. I received a donation of a cardboard box full of instructions and patterns for Finnish national costumes that were going to be thrown away. By chance, I happened to be in the right place at the right time, so I was asked if I might be interested in them. The donor had no expertise or use for them, but they were hesitant to throw them away without asking anyone. I said thank you, and the donor said sorry (when handing me this “useless” pile of paper). I grabbed the box and headed home to examine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And what a treasure this is. I have now gone through and catalogued these for several days. I have counted over 70 partial or complete patterns and instructions for Finnish national costumes. In addition, there are two ancient folk costumes (made after finds from ancient burial finds) and two choir costumes (Alavus and Kuortane), which were designed to resemble national costumes and are worn in the same way. There are instructions and patterns for several men’s national costumes and a few children’s patterns. The collection also includes some general instructions for the care and use of national costumes. Some of the patterns and instructions are as early as 1950’s-60’s, perhaps even from 40’s, and some are as late and the turn of 1990-2000’s. I am completely overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n

From a museum perspective, this collection is not particularly valuable, as almost all of the instructions and patterns for the costumes in the collection are still readily available. Each national costume has a so-called home. This means that the home ensures that the instructions, patterns, and materials for the costume are available. They cannot be obtained from anywhere other than the home of the costume in question. For this reason, even the donor of this collection could not do anything with them. They have been the working tools of one person and, as such, are also quite incomplete. Some of the costumes only have the embroidery pattern for the bonnet or just the sewing instructions, with no patterns at all. I do not have any copyright or sales rights to these, and I cannot copy them for others to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, this collection is much more valuable to me personally, as well as to my current home town. This box contained instructions for making the Kiikoinen costume, which were thought to have been lost forever. The Kiikoinen National Costume is housed at the Kiikoinen Youth Association, but it has not been possible to make the costume for years because the instructions were missing. Also the yarn needed for the fabric is no longer available anywhere because it’s sale and manufacture have ceased. Now, however, there is hope, as the instructions have been found and I have promised to distribute them, at least for the time being. In addition, I will be able to use this collection, with all it’s bits and bobs, as learning material in my future profession as a national costume instructor. Perhaps the best part of the collection, in addition to the actual instructions, are the small fabric samples, pieces of lace and ribbon, and handwritten notes and instructions that the previous user, who retired 20 years ago, has attached to the instructions. Just by cataloging the costumes and their parts, I have learned a lot about national costumes. I am really taken by the fact this collection was given to me and I’m now allowed to use it, to learn and to make costumes for myself. <\/p>\n\n\n

The oldest patterns and instructions on this collection look like this. Drawing is 40’s-50’s style. The instructions are only 5 lines long and don’t tell much to inexperienced sewer. Also these days the goal is to follow more closely the authentic way of making garments, unlike in the 50’s when they adviced to insert elastic band on the hem of the shirt (the original garments are from 1700’s and 1800’s when elastic bands were not invented yet).<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
