The hardest part of owning pets is giving them up. As an emotional person, this is particularly difficult for me. Pets are like family members to me, each with their own character and personality. Animals have their own habits, just like us humans. Gaining an animal’s trust is particularly valuable because it is not given lightly. It requires work and patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NyxAmanda arrived to her forever home in November 2019 from Pesu, the Pirkanmaa Animal Protection Association. Nyx had been rescued from a cat population, where she had already had kittens. I don’t know what Nyx’s early life was like, but according to the vet’s assessment, Nyx was about two years old when she came to us and very scared and shy around people. She had already been waiting for a home in a foster home for over a year. Finding a home for a completely black, shy cat is not an easy task. We wanted to give a chance to cat like that, one that had challenges in finding a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyx spent her first night with us, on top of the bookshelf. We had bought a tall climbing tree, but we wanted to get the cat used to us humans, so at some point we removed the top hammock so that Nyx wouldn’t always hide from us on the top level, where we couldn’t see or reach her without a chair. It took a long time before Nyx dared to even come down from the climbing tree hammock when we were in the same room, but gradually it started to happen and Nyx became interested in what was going on in the house. In six months, Nyx became so encouraged that she dared to come and explore the other rooms. She particularly liked the bed in the bedroom, where it was nice to lie down and take a nap. The “outside” behind the mosquito net door was also particularly interesting, with sounds and smells. So were the birds that occasionally appeared on TV. However, it took a long time before we could properly touch the cat. Turkey slices and a clever trick invented by my spouse helped.<\/p>\n\n\n

Little fox toy, with inserted little bell, came with another purchase long time ago. It’s been the favourite toy for both Taku and Nyx. Fox has lost it’s feather tail years ago, because it’s been loved so much. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

While Nyx was lying in her hammock, we started stroking her with a feather toy. Feather toy is a stick with bundle of feathers attached to the end of it. We stroked Nyx with it, and when she started to relax, we quietly switched from the toy to stroking her with our hands. First very lightly and only for a moment, then more strongly and for longer. The trick was to stop stroking with the hand before Nyx noticed and switch back to the feather toy. Gradually, Nyx allowed herself to be touched and began to seek closeness, but only from me. For some reason, hubby was not acceptable, even though he had specifically begun to accustom Nyx to being touched. I continued the exercises by moving on to lifting training. It happened when I came home and the cat came up to me and climbed onto the bed to give me headbutts. I placed my hand over and under the cat so that palm of my hand was on her chest and my arm under the belly. At first, I did this very briefly and lightly. Gradually, I touched her for longer, and when the touching was successful, I began to lift the cat against my chest, squeezing her very lightly, at first for just a couple of seconds at a time. Eventually, Nyx got so used to it that she let me lift her off the floor and into my lap. At first, Nyx didn’t like being held for long, and I put her down as soon as she started to squirm even slightly. By training the cat slowly, at its own pace, we were able to turn a formerly feral, very skittish and human-shy cat into a lap cat that, in its final years, would seek out my lap and stay there for hours. When you have gained an animal’s trust in this way, with patience and calmness, you create a very strong bond with them, which makes it very hard to let them go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that’s what happened in the end. Nyx had been diagnosed with asthma about three years ago, which remained symptom-free with the help of an asthma inhaler. Unfortunately, less than a year ago, during a routine checkup and tooth extraction, she was also diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Despite good care, the osteoarthritis had progressed much worse than we could have imagined. Moving became too painful for Nyx, she began to limp on her front paw and, despite the stairs we had built for her, she began to stagger when climbing onto the sofa. On Tuesday, following the vet’s recommendation, we made the difficult decision to let her go beyond the stars. Even though we still have three cats left, our home feels very empty now. Nyx was the matriarch of our family, who largely defined life here in Pinehill. Daily medical routines, feeding times, and cuddle sessions set the pace for our days, and Nyx’s loud commands to her human servants and feline friends kept us all in line. Now we are trying to learn a new way of life without Nyx. I have been an unhappy, red-eyed wreck for many days. The sadness is immeasurable.<\/p>\n\n\n
