T\u00e4m\u00e4n p\u00e4iv\u00e4n postaus on v\u00e4h\u00e4n my\u00f6h\u00e4ss\u00e4 aikataulusta sill\u00e4 piti odotella p\u00e4iv\u00e4n valoa kuvien ottamista varten. K\u00e4vin nimitt\u00e4in korjaamassa lintulautaa ja laittamassa linnuille perinteisen joululyhteen. Lintujen talviruokinta on kuulunut talveen lapsuudestani asti. Maalaistalossa oli aina varattuna linnuille talia, kauralyhteit\u00e4 ja jyvi\u00e4. Navetan parven viljalaarit olivat t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 kauraa, josta t\u00e4ydennettiin takapihan lintulautaa ja puun oksaan ripustettiin pala siannahkaa jossa oli paksu kerros rasvaa. Lapsena istuimme pirtin ison ikkunan \u00e4\u00e4ress\u00e4 ja yritimme tunnistaa lintulaudan vierailijoita lintukirjan avulla. Suurinta hupia oli kuitenkin seurata oravan puuhia. Se haki lintulaudalta jyvi\u00e4 ja piilotteli niit\u00e4 lumihankeen. Vaarini oli erityisen mieltynyt oraviin ja h\u00e4n erityisesti piti huolta oravien talviev\u00e4ist\u00e4. Saattaa olla ett\u00e4 mielikuvitus tekee tepposet, mutta minulla on muistikuva ett\u00e4 kurret olisivat kesyyntyneet sen verran ett\u00e4 vaari saattoi ruokkia niit\u00e4 k\u00e4dest\u00e4. Etenkin kaupungeissa ja taajamissa talviruokintaa on v\u00e4hennetty voimakkaasti sen my\u00f6t\u00e4 ilmestyv\u00e4n rottaongelman johdosta. Monin paikoin kaupungeissa lintujen ruokkiminen on kielletty. Siksi en koskaan kaupunkiasujana voinut sit\u00e4 tehd\u00e4. Nyt maalla, taajaman ulkopuolella olen joka vuosi ruokkinut lintuja ja se onkin ollut itselleni yksi t\u00e4rke\u00e4 henkisen hyvinvoinnin l\u00e4hde. Mik\u00e4 sen ilahduttavampaa kuin n\u00e4hd\u00e4 lintulaudalla harvinaistunut h\u00f6m\u00f6tiainen, pirtsakka urpiainen tai pullea punatulkku.<\/p>\n\n\n

Meill\u00e4 lintulaudan vierailijat koostuvat p\u00e4\u00e4osin tali- ja sinitiaisista ja pikkuvarpusista. Pikkuvarpusten parvi on suurentunut vuosi vuodelta. Tavalliset varpuset loistavat poissaolollaan. Satunnaisina vierailijoina ovat punatulkut, jotka pysyv\u00e4t liikkeess\u00e4 ja k\u00e4yv\u00e4t laudalla ehk\u00e4 kerran viikossa, tai harvemmin. Muiden tinttien laumassa laudalla vierailee toisinaan yksi tai kaksi h\u00f6m\u00f6tiaista. Olen t\u00e4st\u00e4 erityisen iloinen sill\u00e4 h\u00f6m\u00f6tiainen on vaarassa kuolla sukupuuttoon, sen luontaisten asuinalueiden k\u00e4ydess\u00e4 v\u00e4hiin. H\u00f6m\u00f6tiainen on Suomessa eritt\u00e4in uhanalainen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muita lintulaudallamme s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisesti vierailevia lajeja ovat mustarastaat ja harakat. Harvinaisempia urpiaiset ja kuusitiaiset. Aiempina vuosina my\u00f6s k\u00e4pytikka on k\u00e4ynyt sy\u00f6m\u00e4ss\u00e4 talipalloja, mutta viime talvena sit\u00e4 ei n\u00e4kynyt. My\u00f6s orava vierailee ruokintapaikalla ja on keksinyt ett\u00e4 pureskelemalla lintulaudan kattoa kiinni pit\u00e4v\u00e4n muoviosan, se p\u00e4\u00e4see k\u00e4siksi jyv\u00e4varastoon ja olenkin bongannut sen muutama p\u00e4iv\u00e4 sitten p\u00e4\u00e4 alasp\u00e4in jyv\u00e4s\u00e4ili\u00f6ss\u00e4. Kurre on jyrsinyt tuo osan nyt jo kahdesti. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa korjasin sen ohuella rautalangalla. Katsotaan riirr\u00e4\u00e4k\u00f6 kurren voima langan v\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4miseksi paikoiltaan ja pit\u00e4\u00e4k\u00f6 se vaihtaa j\u00e4re\u00e4mp\u00e4\u00e4n. Today’s post is a little late because I had to wait for daylight to take the photos. I went to repair the bird feeder and put out the traditional Christmas sheaf for the birds. Feeding birds in winter has been part of my whole childhood. At our farmhouse, we always had tallow, oat sheafs, and grains reserved for the birds. The grain bins in the barn were full of oats, which we used to fill the bird feeder in the backyard, and we hung a piece of pigskin with a thick layer of fat on a tree branch. As children, we would sit by the large window in the living room and try to identify the visitors to the bird feeder with the help of a bird book. However, the most fun was watching the squirrels. They would fetch grains from the bird feeder and hide them in the snow. My grandfather was particularly fond of squirrels and took special care of their winter food supply. It may be my imagination playing tricks on me, but I have a memory of the squirrels becoming so tame that my grandfather could feed them from his hand. It may not actually be true, I’m no longer sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, these childhood memories have left such an impression on me that I want to feed birds in winter as an adult too. Many birds desperately need it to survive the cold season until spring. Winter feeding has been greatly reduced, especially in cities and towns, due to the rat problem that comes with it. In many places in cities, feeding birds is prohibited. That is why I was never able to do it as a city dweller. Now that I live in the countryside, outside the village center, I have been feeding birds every year, and it has been an important source of mental well-being for me. What could be more delightful than seeing a rare willow tit, a lively redpoll, or a plump bullfinch on a bird feeder?<\/p>\n\n\n

Cute acorn-shaped feeder has crushed peanuts. Tits especially like this. Squirrel has also tried and managed to dent the metal netting. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

The most frequent visitors to our bird feeder mainly are great tits, blue tits, and tree sparrows. The flock of tree sparrows has grown larger every year. In my childhood so ordinary common sparrows are completely absent these days. Occasional visitors include bullfinches, which are always on the move and visit the feeder perhaps once a week, or less often. Among the other tits, one or two willow tits occasionally visit the feeder. I am particularly happy about this because the willow tit is in danger of extinction as its natural habitats are disappearing. The willow tit is highly endangered in Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other species that regularly visit our bird feeder include blackbirds and magpies. Less common are redpolls and coal tits. In earlier seasons also great spotted woodpecker has visited our fatball serving, but I didn’t see it last winter at all. Squirrels also visit the feeding station and have figured out that by chewing through the plastic part that holds the roof of the bird feeder in place, they can get to the grain supply. I spotted one upside down in the grain container a couple of days ago. The squirrel has chewed through that part twice now. This time, I repaired it with thin iron wire. We’ll see if squirrel’s strength is enough to bend the wire out of place and if it needs to be replaced with something stronger. I don’t mind that they come to eat it’s share of the food on offer, but I’m more annoyed that it has now broken two bird feeders.<\/p>\n\n\n

Different birds like different food. For that reason I like to make seed mixes. I buy smaller bags of seedmixes and combine them with peeled sunflowerseeds and linseeds. Sometimes I also add peeled oat grains.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

We had to add extra tray under the birdfeeder, because birds are throwing quite a lot of seeds on the ground. That excited the rodents a bit too much. Tray collects most of the seeds. The pile of seeds on the ground is made by me when I was replacing the squirrel-eaten plastic stick. I am hoping that bullfinches would arrive soon to eat them. They most often like to eat from the ground (or from trees), even though they do visit the feeder too. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

Bullfinch last winter. Our feeder has frequent weekly or monthly visits from larger flock of bullfinches, but couple of finches, which nest in our forest, have been visiting more often than that. Sometimes unusual weather brings much rarer visitors to our feeder. Spring last year we had bad snow storm in April. Redwings were forced to look food from our feeder. Redwing doesn’t spend winter in Finland, but the Spring migration might be as early as in March, depending on the weather. Heavy snowfall of the April surprised the Redwing. Apologies for bad photo. My phone camera is not at it’s best when bird photographying. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
