Usein puhutaan suomalaisten erityisest\u00e4 luontosuhteesta. Siit\u00e4 on tullut k\u00e4site joka muistetaan aina mainita kun halutaan tuoda Suomea esiin positiivisessa valossa. Monille luontosuhde varmasti onkin erityinen, niin my\u00f6s minulle. Juttelimme er\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 kurssilla siit\u00e4 mik\u00e4 on kunkin osallistujan vesielementti. Ohjaajallemme se oli joki, kun taas minulle se on j\u00e4rvi. Mutta vesi ei ole minun t\u00e4rkein luontoelementtini vaan mets\u00e4. Mets\u00e4ss\u00e4 lataudun, rauhoitun ja lep\u00e4\u00e4n. Voin paremmin kun saan asua mets\u00e4n v\u00e4litt\u00f6m\u00e4ss\u00e4 l\u00e4heisyydess\u00e4 ja n\u00e4en luonnon el\u00e4imineen kotini ikkunoista. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on sin\u00e4ns\u00e4 hassua, sill\u00e4 olen kuitenkin luonteeltani melko mukavuudenhaluinen. En pid\u00e4 siit\u00e4 ett\u00e4 jalat kastuvat, palelen helposti ja olen aika laiskakin. En halua y\u00f6py\u00e4 mets\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja vaelluksiin olen liian sohvaperuna, en min\u00e4 mik\u00e4\u00e4n er\u00e4pirkko ole. Silti tarvitsen mets\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4helleni voidakseni hyvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uskon kuitenkin, ett\u00e4 suurelle osalle suomalaisista luontosuhde on menett\u00e4nyt merkityksens\u00e4. El\u00e4m\u00e4 on kiireist\u00e4, asutaan ahtaasti kaupungeissa, tavoitellaan omaa hyv\u00e4\u00e4 oloa ja elintasoa, mets\u00e4t ja j\u00e4rvet ovat kaukana tai niiden l\u00e4helle ei tule hakeuduttua. Uutiset t\u00e4yttyv\u00e4t susipaniikista, raakkutuhoista, avohakkuista. Erityisen luontosuhteen omaava suomalainen tuhoaa luontoa, joko v\u00e4linpit\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6myytt\u00e4\u00e4n (raakut), euron kuvat silmiss\u00e4 (kaivokset ja tuulipuistot) tai tahallaan (uhanalaisten ja rauhoitettujen el\u00e4inten kaatoluvat).<\/p>\n\n\n

Tonttimme on iso ja p\u00e4\u00e4osin kivikkoinen ja mets\u00e4inen. T\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 liikkuu jonkin verran kyyk\u00e4\u00e4rmeit\u00e4. Me annamme niiden liikkua rauhassa. Our property is quite large and mainly rocky and foresty. There is some common european vipers around here. We let them roam freely. They don’t really come to our yard close to the house, except when they are just passing through. After living here four years I saw first time viper on our yard past summer. We get along quite nicely.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Kirjoitan t\u00e4st\u00e4 kuitenkin siksi, ett\u00e4 olen lopen kyll\u00e4stynyt t\u00e4h\u00e4n erityiseen luontosuhteeseen. Mik\u00e4 on se sellainen erityinen luontosuhde, joka tappaa, tuhoaa ja ry\u00f6st\u00e4\u00e4? Ei se ole erityinen luontosuhde. Se on alistava ja haitallinen hyv\u00e4ksik\u00e4ytt\u00f6- ja hy\u00f6tysuhde. Suomalaiselle luonto on erityinen niin kauan kuin se ei tule liian l\u00e4helle, sit\u00e4 ei tarvitse ottaa huomioon, eik\u00e4 siit\u00e4 voi hy\u00f6ty\u00e4. Jos luonto tulee omaan pihaan, se pit\u00e4\u00e4 kitke\u00e4, h\u00e4vitt\u00e4\u00e4 ja tappaa. Luonto? Not in my backyard! Nurmikon pit\u00e4\u00e4 olla t\u00e4ydellinen. Auta armias jos yksikin voikukka, vuohenputki tai sammalm\u00e4t\u00e4s erehtyy nurmikon joukkoon. Ja jos orava tunkee lintulaudalle, sit\u00e4 varten pit\u00e4\u00e4 rakentaa esteet. Kyy jos sattuu pihaan niin se on p\u00e4\u00e4 poikki, etteiv\u00e4t vain pure koiria ja lapsia. Ja sudet, ne vasta vaarallisia ovatkin. Niin vaarallisia ett\u00e4 ne pit\u00e4\u00e4 tappaa, ihan vaan koska sattuvat olemaan olemassa. Sama n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 koskevan my\u00f6s suurpetoamme saukkoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asiahan ei silti ole ihan n\u00e4in yksinkertainen. Silloin kun puhutaan haitallisista vieraslajeista suomalaisen erityinen luontosuhde nostaa p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n. Kyll\u00e4h\u00e4n nyt jokaisen pit\u00e4\u00e4 saada p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4 kotoper\u00e4isille lajeillemme haitallisia akvaariokaloja ja -kasveja suoraan pihalampeen ja pit\u00e4\u00e4 saada kasvattaa omassa pihassa lupiinia, kanadanpiiskua ja kurtturuusua kun ovat niin n\u00e4ttej\u00e4 ja helppohoitoisia. Ja kyll\u00e4 ainakin kissan pit\u00e4\u00e4 saada ulkoilla vapaasti maalla kun hiirest\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ytyy. Ett\u00e4 miksi ihmeess\u00e4 toisilla on sellainen hirve\u00e4 h\u00e4vitysvimma kun kaikki kaunis pit\u00e4\u00e4 luonnosta tuhota ja kissat v\u00e4kisin sulkea sis\u00e4\u00e4n asuntoihin? *sarkasmi p\u00e4\u00e4ttyy*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erityinen luontosuhde. Semmoinen meill\u00e4 suomalaisilla tosiaan on. Erityisen toksinen ja tuhoava luontosuhde. Luontoa saa olla kunhan se ei ole luonnollista.<\/p>\n\n\n

People (especially Finns themselves) often talk about Finns’ special relationship with nature. It has become a concept that is always mentioned when people want to portray Finland in a positive light. For many, this relationship with nature is certainly special, for me too. In a course, we recently discussed what each participant’s water element was. For our teacher, it was a river, while for me it is a lake. But water is not my most important natural element; that would be the forest. In the forest, I recharge, calm down, and rest. I feel better when I live close to the forest and can see nature and animals from my windows. This is funny really, because I am actually quite comfortable by nature. I don’t like getting my feet wet, I feel cold easily, and I’m also quite lazy. I don’t want to spend the night in the forest, and I’m too much of a couch potato for hiking; I’m not an outdoorsy type. Still, I need the forest close to me to feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, I believe that for most Finns, their relationship with nature has lost its significance. Life is busy, we live in crowded cities, we strive for our own well-being and standard of living, and forests and lakes are far away or we don’t seek them out. The news is full of wolf panic, destruction of freshwater pearl mussels, and clear-cutting. Finns, who have a special relationship with nature, destroy nature either through indifference (freshwater pearl mussles), with money in their eyes (mines and wind farms), or deliberately (hunting permits for endangered and protected wildlife).<\/p>\n\n\n

Wild flowers in the garden seem to be almost like curse word for many. This small nodding avens is one of my favourites. So delicate and beautiful. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

I usually keep the content of my blog lighthearted because the world is already a pretty depressing place and I need a nice, fluffy escape. However, I am writing about this because I am completely fed up with this special connection with nature. What kind of special connection with nature kills, destroys, and exploits? It is not a special relationship with nature. It is a oppressive and harmful relationship of exploitation and profit. For Finns, nature is special as long as it doesn’t get too close, doesn’t need to be taken into account, and can’t be exploited. If nature enters one’s own yard, it must be weeded, destroyed, and killed. Nature? Not in my backyard! The lawn must be perfect. Heaven forbid if even a single dandelion, ground elder, or moss patch finds it’s way into the lawn. And if a squirrel ventures onto the bird feeder, barriers must be built to keep it away. If a snake happens to wander into the yard, it must be killed so that it doesn’t bite the dogs and kids. And wolves, they are really dangerous. So dangerous that they must be killed, just because they happen to exist. Same seems to be now with our other major predator, otter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the issue is not quite that simple. When discussing harmful invasive species, the Finnish people’s special relationship with nature comes to play. Of course, everyone should be allowed to release aquarium fish and plants that are harmful to our native species directly into their backyard ponds and grow lupines and invasive rugosa rose in their gardens because they are so pretty and easy to care for. And cats should definitely be allowed to roam freely in the countryside because they need to hunt mice. Why on earth do some people have such a terrible urge to destroy everything beautiful in nature and force cats to stay indoors? *sarcasm ends<\/em>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special connection to nature. That we Finns definitely have. Specially toxic and destructive connection. Nature can be if it’s not natural.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here on our little village they cut lot of forest every year. Most cuts are clear-cut logging. I am expecting them to cut my bilberry forest quite soon. Trees are starting to look like they are on the harvesting size soon.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

We are not too fussy about cleaning the garden in the Autumn. We leave most of the dry plants in their places untill spring. I only fold the peony stalks downwards so that water doesn’t go inside them and rot the roots. Nature on the yard doesn’t have to be cleaned from natures own “rubbish”. We even leave most leaves on the ground. They will turn into mulch eventually. Seeding plants also provide food for the wildlife in the Autumn.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

There is several squirrels living on our little forest. They get their share of the winter feedings. Allthough there is three <\/em>huge oak trees on the next door neighbours yard. I should assume there is plenty of food for those little critters. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

Once I found shed skin of viper. They don’t last very long in the nature, so it couldn’t be very old. We can co-exist quite nicely here. When doing gardening, I am almost always wearing wellies for protection.
