Kirjovirkkaus kuuluu perinteisiin suomalaisiin käsityötekniikoihin. Kirjovirkkauksella on valmistettu käsineitä, päähineitä, neulepuseroita, pussukoita, vöitä jne. Kirjovirkkauksella saa napakan, mutta kevyesti joustavan tekstiilin. Korsnäströja on muutenkin yksi erikoislaatuisimmista perinnekäsitöistä.

I am currently working on a project that I don’t want to reveal entirely just yet, but I thought I could tell you about the craft technique used in it. Intarsia crochet is a traditional Finnish craft technique. Intarsia crocheted items include gloves, hats, sweaters, bags, belts, etc. Crochet produces a firm but slightly stretchy fabric. One of the most impressive Finnish intarsia crocheted textiles is the traditional Korsnäs sweater, which was worn especially from the mid-1800’s to the early 1900’s. Korsnäs sweaters are one of the most unique traditional Finnish handicrafts. Body of the sweater has traditionally been knitted in groups of three women. You can read more about it here (in Finnish though). Intarsia crochet became popular in Finland in the 1850s. The most popular crocheted handicrafts have been various types of bags and belts. These were small, fairly easy projects that could nevertheless incorporate striking, colorful patterns. In last year’s Christmas calendar, I wrote in my blog about Siina Rinne from Huittinen, who was a skilled craftswoman and used a lot of intarsia crochet in her work. I still dream of the gloves Siina made, which I saw last year at the Huittinen Museum. I hope that someday I will have time to make copies of them.

I haven’t done any intarsia crochet since my student days, which was over 20 years ago. So I needed to refresh my memory a little. Fortunately, it isn’t very complicated as long as you remember a couple of things. Intarsia crochet is always done from the right side. This means that if it is not possible to work in a continuous circle, the yarn must always be cut at the end of a row and for the next row new yarn must be used. This gives crocheted items their typical characteristics, i.e., crocheted belts are always crocheted lengthwise and have tassels or pom-poms at the ends, made from the ends of the yarns. Another important thing to remember is that at the color change point, the last loop of the stitch must be crocheted with the next color. In addition, the stitches are crocheted only into the back edge of the previous row. These two factors make the patterns clearer and more precise. The fourth thing to remember is that all the yarns needed for the same row are crocheted into each stitch until it is the turn to use that color. Because of this, the more colors there are, the thicker and stiffer the fabric will be. Multicolored crochet work is best done with good-quality, thin wool yarn, which keeps the fabric flexible and prevents it from becoming too thick and stiff. When crocheting with cotton yarn, too many colors in one layer will result in a hard and stiff finish.

Have you tried intarsia crochet? What textile would you use it for?

Värinvaihtokohdassa silmukan viimeinen lenkki virkataan seuraavan värin langalla.
