<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nDuring renovating a house, mistakes are not always avoidable. When we bought Havum\u00e4ki almost five years ago, one of the first things we needed to re-do in the house was the electrical system. The old system was outdated and very much undersized for our modern needs. The electric heating blew a fuse when turned on in several rooms at the same time, and there were far too few outlets, and they were in the wrong places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had made a detailed plan for renovating the electrical system, considered the need for outlets in each room, and marked their locations and places for the light switches on both the floor plan and the walls. But it just so happened that one small mistake slipped into the plan. The light switch for the staircase leading to the upper floor is in completely wrong place. I think that if we had actually been living in the house by that time and sleeping in the bedroom, this mistake would not have been made. When we moved into the bedroom, we realized almost immediately that it didn’t work. At all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We mistakenly assumed that the most logical place for the light switch would be next to the staircase. If our bedroom was to the left of the staircase, this would be the case. But our bedroom is straight ahead from the staircase, and there are several steps between the bedroom door and the light switch. When coming from the bedroom, you have to step down one angled step to reach the switch. Try doing this in complete darkness. Yep. I tried it once and realized that the risk of falling is real. However, we don’t have the funds to move the switch at the moment. Maybe sometime in the future. But the issue had to be resolved somehow so that neither of us would end up falling down the stairs and through the porch windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are both a little nerdy, and silly ideas in the house are not out of the question for us. I have been dreaming about the floating candles seen in the Harry Potter movies for years. I planned to hang them from the ceiling of our downstairs lobby. However, we urgently needed lighting in our bedroom hallway in the dark mornings, so we bought two packs of remote-controlled “floating” LED candles, which I hung from the ceiling with small screw hooks. They are handy when you want to light many candles at once. In this case, LEDs with a timer function would not work because light is needed both in the mornings and evenings, so the 6-hour burn time of timer LED candles does not serve the intended purpose. However, the remote control works like a dream, and at least this manufacturer’s remote controls work with both candle packages, so two controls are not needed. Of course, one remote control could be kept at the top of the stairs and the other in the bedroom, so you wouldn’t even need to carry the remote control around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We don’t really burn much real candles these days because of nosy cats. However sometimes it’s nice to have candles around. Remote-controlled LED-candles are really handy and are also much safer to use. They are also practical in case of power cuts, to bring easily controlled light to rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n

In the fading afternoon light flying candles give quite lovely light to the doorway. The staircase light switch is about half a meter out of the photo on the left. Outside of the photo is also the top step of the staircase, which you have to take to be able to reach the switch. Sorry about the mess, we should tidy up the renovation junk at some point.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

From the door towards the staircase, light switch is on the right, behind the corner on the green paneled wall. At the moment the staircase is lit by jugend lamp, however at some point we want to replace that with wooden chandelier. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

I bought two short remote controlled led-candles to try. They were too heavy for the bedroom candle holders, however these living room mirrored candle holders work just fine. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
