Lempi vuodenaikani on syksy ja kekri. Olen alkanut juhlia halloweenia jo silloin kun sit\u00e4 ei Suomessa juuri juhlittu. Y\u00f6kerhon halloween-naamiaisasu-kisassa oli joskus ys\u00e4rin puoliv\u00e4liss\u00e4 osallistujina min\u00e4 ja kolme muuta. Niin paljon kuin halloweenia rakastankin niin olen viime vuosina kuitenkin yritt\u00e4nyt v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 halloweenkr\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4n ostamista kaupasta ja sen sijaan tehd\u00e4 ainakin osan koristeista itse. T\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna ker\u00e4sin \u00e4idin puutarhasta oranssina hohtavia lyhtykoisoja, joista askartelin voikukkak\u00f6ynn\u00f6sten tilalle syksyiset k\u00f6ynn\u00f6kset. Omassa puutarhassa sit\u00e4 ei viel\u00e4 kasva koska viime syksyn\u00e4 istuttamani taimi ei selvinnyt talvesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyhtykoiso on hauska kasvi. Pienet valkoiset kukat ovat melko vaatimattomat verrattuna kasvin syksyiseen v\u00e4riloistoon. Sen ananaskirsikkaa muistuttava, pient\u00e4 marjaa suojaava suuri, ontto siemenkota muuttuu syksyn edetess\u00e4 vihre\u00e4st\u00e4 hehkuvan oranssiksi. Ne ovat nimens\u00e4 mukaisesti kuin hohtavia pieni\u00e4 lyhtyj\u00e4 puutarhan keskell\u00e4. Maatuessaan siemenkota muuttuu herk\u00e4ksi hauraaksi luurankomaiseksi palluraksi, johon j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t ainoastaan suonet paperimaisten sein\u00e4mien kadotessa. My\u00f6h\u00e4\u00e4n syksyll\u00e4 kun kasvin lehdet ovat jo lakastuneet ja irronneet varsista, lyhtykoisojen oranssit siemenkodat ovat n\u00e4ytt\u00e4vi\u00e4 kuivakukkia. Mielest\u00e4ni se sopii erinomaisesti kauden koristeiksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

K\u00f6ynn\u00f6s on helppo tehd\u00e4 samoin kuin voikukkak\u00f6ynn\u00f6s, pujottelemalla kasvin varresta irti leikatut siemenkodat neulan avulla kalalankaan. Siemenkodat muuttuvat kuivuessaan silkkipaperin hauraiksi, joten pujottelu kannattaa tehd\u00e4 kun siemenkodat ovat jo muuttuneet oransseiksi, mutta kasvin lehdet ja varsi ei ole viel\u00e4 muuttuneet ruskeiksi. Tuoreet siemenkodat ovat pehmeit\u00e4 ja kest\u00e4v\u00e4t paremmin k\u00e4sittely\u00e4. Ne on helpompi suoristaa jos ne menev\u00e4t k\u00e4sittelyst\u00e4 lyttyyn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meille lyhtykoisolla ei taida olla mit\u00e4\u00e4n erityist\u00e4 perinnek\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 vaikka signatuuriopin mukaan sit\u00e4 onkin k\u00e4ytetty ilmeisesti munuais- ja virtsavaivoihin. Japanissa sen sijaan lyhtykoiso, h\u014dzuki, liittyy oleellisesti perinteiseen Obon-juhlaan jossa kunnioitetaan vainajien henki\u00e4. Juhlan aikaan hein\u00e4kuussa Tokiossa pidet\u00e4\u00e4n h\u014dzuki ichi, eli markkinat, jossa myyd\u00e4\u00e4n lyhtykoison varsia ja muita lyhtykoiso-tuotteita. Kasveilla koristellaan juhlan aikana hautoja, koteja ja bon-alttareita. Kirkkaanoranssien siemenkotien sanotaan ohjaavan vainajien henget takaisin kotiin. Minusta se on kaunis tapa. <\/p>\n\n\n

My favourite season is Autumn and Halloween. I started celebrating Halloween even before it became popular in Finland. In the mid-1990s, there was a Halloween costume contest at a nightclub, and there was only me and three other people participating. As much as I love halloween, in recent years, however, I have tried to reduce my purchases of Halloween decorations from stores and instead make my own decorations. This year, I collected orange chinese lantern plants (or japanese lantern plants, winter cherry, which ever name you prefer) from my mother’s garden and used them to make autumnal garlands to replace the dandelion garlands<\/a>. Chinese lanterns don’t grow in my own garden yet because the seedlings I planted last fall didn’t survive the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lantern plant is a delightful plant. It’s small white flowers are quite modest compared to the plant’s Autumn colours. The large, hollow seed pods that protects the small berries changes from green to glowing orange as Autumn progresses. As their name suggests, they are like small glowing lanterns in the garden. As they decay, the seed pods turn into delicate skeleton-like net balls, with only the veins remaining as the papery walls disappear. In late autumn, when the plant’s stems have already withered and fallen off, the orange seed pods of the lantern plant are spectacular dried flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garland is easy to make same way than dandelion garland, by threading the seed pods onto sturdy cotton thread using a needle. The seed pods become as fragile as silk paper when they dry, so it is best to thread them when they have turned orange but the leaves and stem of the plant have not yet turned brown. Fresh seed pods are soft and more resistant to handling. They are easier to straighten if they get dents during handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t seem to have any particular traditional use for chinese lantern plants, although according to old doctrine of signatures, they have apparently been used to treat kidney and urinary problems. In Japan, however, Chinese lantern plants, or h\u014dzuki, are an essential part of the traditional Obon festival, which honours the spirits of the dead. During the festival in July, Tokyo holds h\u014dzuki ichi, a market where h\u014dzuki stems and other h\u014dzuki products are sold. The plants are used to decorate graves, homes, and bon altars during the festival. The bright orange seed pods are said to guide the spirits of the dead back home. I think it’s beautiful custom. <\/p>\n\n\n

It’s easier to thread the lanterns when they are fresh. They will stick to the thread when they dry. It’s also easier to handle them when they are not that fragile yet.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

Dandelions lasted whole summer and early Autumn without dropping any seeds. Only ones which were shedding, were the ones hanging from the picture frame shelf.
