<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nLet’s continue with the renovation theme for a moment. Here in Pinehill, we have an interesting room layout because the upstairs rooms are accessed via an unheated, cold porch and upstairs lobby. Otherwise, it’s not really a problem, but getting up in the middle of the night in the upstairs bedroom to go to the loo downstairs, through the porch that’s below freezing in the Winter, can be a bit extreme. So we ended up with a slightly unusual solution and built a dry toilet upstairs as a second toilet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the sloping roof, there already is a toilet and shower built in the 1960s, but they had been taken out of use sometime in the 1980s due to a sewer leak. According to the neighbour, the cast iron sewage pipe had frozen in the winter and leaked into the downstairs living room. It’s terrifying to even think about what kind of surprises might be found behind the lowered ceiling panels in there, but that problem will have to be solved some other time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A dry toilet makes life easier (and saves money) in many ways. There are no more queues behind the toilet door (believe it or not, it’s possible in even two people household). During the construction phase, it saved us from expensive and laborious plumbing work. In a log house, all sewer and water pipes on the upper floor must be routed through the rooms on the lower floor, because walls are solid. The Separett Tiny, a separating dry toilet designed for small spaces, separates solid and dry waste. Using a dry toilet therefore saves water. Alternative toilet models would have been a freezing or incinerating toilet, but both require electricity to operate and contain more fragile electronics. And, of course, they are also many times more expensive. The separating toilet does not require electricity to operate. Only the fan that ensures odorlessness requires power, but the toilet can also be used during a power outage if a slight temporary odor does not bother you. The waste can be used as fertilizer in the garden. Hand hygiene is taken care of with hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes, or the traditional method of carrying water. In a second toilet, these options are perfectly valid. This way dry toilet is also part of self-sufficiency, by reducing water consumption and the need to buy fertilizers to the garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the bedroom renovation, the floor and walls of this small bathroom were also renovated. I deviated slightly from my principles and gave in to the hubbys wish for laminate flooring. I chose vinyl wallpaper for the walls so that it would be as easy as possible to clean if necessary. I didn’t particularly like the wallpapering. Paper and thin fiber wallpapers are more to my liking. The ceiling in the bathroom is low, so ceiling lights were out of the question. So we ended up with second-hand wall lights, which we fitted with remote-controlled smart bulbs. This way, both lights can be controlled with the same switch. Vinyl wallpaper can be wiped clean with damp cloth.<\/em><\/strong> Chair, metal shelf and towel rack were all found from our own storage. Opposite to the toilet seat is just enough space for this drawer. Like almost all furniture we have, this has seen better days. It’s missing one of the front trimmings and little bits are missing from another. Painted surface is coarse, like it was heated in the fire. Wall sconces I found locally from Facebook Marketplace, table cloth is from mum’s vast table cloth collection, hatbox and picture frame from my stash. Both lights have intelligent LED-bulbs and they can be conrtolled with one remote control.
