Otsikosta saatoitte ehk\u00e4 arvata, ett\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 vuosi on melkoinen epic fail. Mit\u00e4\u00e4n en kylv\u00e4nyt, enk\u00e4 juuri istuttanutkaan. En tajua miksei t\u00e4m\u00e4 saamattomuus ja v\u00e4symys jo helpota. Mutta ei t\u00e4m\u00e4 syksy siihen omaan saamattomuuteen olisi kaatunut sill\u00e4 aina on nuo luumupuut, joista satoa saa vaikkei jaksaisi kylv\u00e4\u00e4 mit\u00e4\u00e4n. Paitsi ett\u00e4 ei. Keltaiset luumut olivat kadonneet puusta v\u00e4hin \u00e4\u00e4nin ennekuin ehdin edes huomata. Huomasin nimitt\u00e4in jo pari-kolme viikkoa sitten ett\u00e4 orapihlajat ja pihlajat oli jo tyhjennetty marjoista. Orapihlajissa on marjoja yleens\u00e4 viel\u00e4 marraskuussakin. Mutta onneksi on aina \u00e4idin omenapuut. Paitsi ett\u00e4 ei. Viimevuotisen huippusadon vuoksi puut pit\u00e4v\u00e4t t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna lomaa. Viidess\u00e4 satoisassa ja isossa puussa on t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna n\u00e4hty alkukes\u00e4st\u00e4 yksi raakile. YKSI! Edes koristeomenassa (?), jonka omenat ovat niin pahan makuisia ettei kukaan niit\u00e4 viitsi sy\u00f6d\u00e4 ei ollut yht\u00e4\u00e4n raakiletta. Kirsikkapuista l\u00f6ytyi niinik\u00e4\u00e4n yksi sy\u00f6t\u00e4v\u00e4 kirsikka. Kauden teema tuntuu olevan “yksi”. (Min\u00e4h\u00e4n uhkasin jo aikoja sitten vet\u00e4\u00e4 sile\u00e4ksi kaikki kirsikat muutenkin.) No viel\u00e4 oli pari viimeist\u00e4 toivoa j\u00e4ljell\u00e4, nimitt\u00e4in \u00e4idin tyrnipensaat ja japaninruusukvitteni. Mutta arvannette jo vastauksen. Tyrnipensaissa oli per\u00e4ti kuusi marjaa, vaikka raakileita niiss\u00e4 oli reilu kuukausi sitten viel\u00e4 ihan reilusti. Ja ruusukvitteni oli tyystin tyhjentynyt raakileista. Ei yhden yht\u00e4. Liek\u00f6 asialla olleet supikoirat, hiiret, myyr\u00e4t, linnut, mitk\u00e4 lie. Edes \u00e4idin valtavassa aroniassa ei ollut yht\u00e4\u00e4n marjaa j\u00e4ljell\u00e4. Omassa aroniassa oli pari p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4 sitten en\u00e4\u00e4 pari raakaa terttua. <\/p>\n\n\n

Sato on siis t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna ihan totaalinen epic fail. Se niist\u00e4 rommiluumuista, omenatuoremehusta ja kuivatuista omenasiivuista. Omien marjapuskienkin marjat meniv\u00e4t lintujen suihin koska olin liian hidas, saamaton ja muka kiireinen. P\u00e4nnii oma saamattomuus, mutta eih\u00e4n sille t\u00e4ss\u00e4 vaiheessa oikein mit\u00e4\u00e4n voi. Niinp\u00e4 sitten ostin \u00e4mp\u00e4rillisen puolukkaa ett\u00e4 saan talvivarastoihin edes jotain. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on luultavasti huonoin vuosi sitten Havum\u00e4keen muuttomme. Voisin potkaista itse\u00e4ni s\u00e4\u00e4reen, niin paljon se harmittaa. Tosin t\u00e4m\u00e4n vuotinen sato olisi todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti ollut melko huono silti vaikka olisin tehnyt kaikkeni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuleva talvi pit\u00e4nee menn\u00e4 ostomehuilla. Se hiukan harmittaa, sill\u00e4 kaupan mehuissa on sivumaku, josta en kamalasti pid\u00e4. Luulen ett\u00e4 keinotekoiset makeutusaineet antavat mehuihin ep\u00e4miellytt\u00e4v\u00e4n maun. Satoon liittyvi\u00e4 ilon aiheita on siis t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n jos lainkaan. Ensi vuonna uudella innolla. Ehk\u00e4. Onneksi remontti sent\u00e4\u00e4n on edennyt joka vuosi nyk\u00e4yksitt\u00e4in eteenp\u00e4in ja liiteriss\u00e4 riitt\u00e4\u00e4 polttopuuta edelleen. Puutarhaa on alettu laitella talviteloille, mik\u00e4 meid\u00e4n tapauksessa tarkoittaa joidenkin taimien istuttamista, remonttikamojen siivoilua ja vesisaavien tyhjent\u00e4mist\u00e4 ja pesua. Haravointia meill\u00e4 tehd\u00e4\u00e4n hyvin minimaalisesti. Haravoin ainoastaan kulkuv\u00e4yl\u00e4t sill\u00e4 sateesta kastuvat, maatuvat lehdet ovat liukkaita. Muualla pihassa lehdet saavat maatua niille sijoilleen. Perennapenkkej\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n en turhaan siivoile, kasvit saavat maatua takaisin kukkapenkin ravinteeksi. Kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 vasta siistin viimeiset talvent\u00f6rr\u00f6tt\u00e4j\u00e4t. Talvella ne antavat hauskaa silm\u00e4niloa muuttumalla huurteisiksi ja lumisiksi pihakoristeiksi ja linnut saavat sy\u00f6d\u00e4 niist\u00e4 viimeisetkin siemenet.<\/p>\n\n\n

From the title, you may have guessed that this year has been quite an epic fail. I didn’t sow anything, nor did I plant much. I don’t understand why this lack of enthusiasm and fatigue haven’t eased up yet. But this fall isn’t complete failure, after all we still got the plum trees, which always produce a harvest even if I don’t feel like sowing anything. Except that they didn’t. The yellow damsons had disappeared from the tree before I even noticed anything. And the purple damsons disappeared almost overnight, so when I went to check them a week ago, to see if they were finally ripe, there was only one left! ONE! I picked it and ate it a little bit raw. Apparently, this year’s berry harvest has been so poor that even the plums, which are usually left alone by the birds, have been eaten raw. I noticed a several weeks ago that the rowan and hawthorn bushes had already been stripped of their berries. But luckily, there’s always my mum’s apple trees. Except that there aren’t. Due to last year’s huge crop, the trees are taking a break this year. In five large, productive trees, only one unripe apple has been spotted since the beginning of summer. ONE! The cherry trees also provided one edible cherry. The theme of the season seems to be “one.” (And I had already threatened to cut down all the cherries anyway.) Well there was couple more hopes left, mum’s sea buckthorn and japanese quince. But you probably already guessed the answer. Buckthorn had six berries left, even though it was quite full of raw berries 1,5 months ago. And also the quice had been emptied from fruit by something. Not a single fruit left. I don’t know if it was raccoon dog, mice, voles, birds or what. Even mums huge chokeberry didn’t have any berries left. Our own chokeberry had couple berries left the other day, but they were still raw. <\/p>\n\n\n

So this year’s harvest is a total epic fail. So much for the rum plums, apple juice, and dried apple slices. The berries from my own bushes were eaten by birds because I was too slow, uninterested, and supposedly busy. I’m annoyed at my own lazyness, but there’s nothing I can do about it at this point. So I bought a bucketful of lingonberries to have at least something in my winter storage. This is probably the worst year harvest-wise since we moved to Havum\u00e4ki. I could kick myself, I’m so annoyed. This summer has been bad for crops elsewhere too, so it’s possible that the harvest would have been poor even if I had done everything I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This winter, I’ll probably have to buy juice. That’s a bit annoying, because store-bought juice has an aftertaste that I don’t like very much. I think artificial sweeteners give the juice an unpleasant taste. But there is still one hope left: my mother’s sea buckthorn bushes. Keep your fingers crossed that we’ll get something out of them. So there are very few, if any, reasons to be happy about the harvest this year. Next year, with renewed enthusiasm. Maybe. Fortunately, the renovation has progressed every year and there is still plenty of wood for burning in the barn. We have slowly started to prepare the garden for the winter. In our case it means I have planted some plants, emptied and washed the water butts and tidied up some renovation materials. I don’t really rake much, only the walkways, because rotting wet leaves are quite slippery. Rest of the leaves can stay on the ground and turn into nutrients. I don’t really tidy up the flower beds either, I allow everything to rot in their place and release the nutrients back into the soil. I will tidy up dried plants in the spring. In the Winter they turn into funny frosty and snowy garden decorations and birds can eat the last seeds from them. <\/p>\n\n\n

Toivon ett\u00e4 taaempana n\u00e4kyv\u00e4 raparperi s\u00e4\u00e4styi mesisienelt\u00e4. Mesisienen tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n tappaneen jopa hyv\u00e4kuntoisia puita. \/
My new flowerbed, which I made during the summer. I am testing out the combination of flowers and vegetables. Above the white label, behind the flowerbed you can see brown pile of peat. That is the remains of our rhubarb. In mid-season the rhubarb suddenly started turning red and the stalks started going limb and die. Early Autumn honey fungus mushrooms started to appear on that exact location. There’s been loads of them everywhere this Autumn. I am suspecting that it might have killed our rhubarb. I am hoping that the other rhubarb which you can see further back, survied the honey fungus. It is known to kill even healthy trees. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
