Molemmat kyl\u00e4kaupat k\u00e4rsiv\u00e4t mittavia rahallisia menetyksi\u00e4 ruuan pilaantuessa kylm\u00e4kaappeihin. Heill\u00e4 ei my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n ollut mahdollisuutta pit\u00e4\u00e4 liikkeit\u00e4 auki koska s\u00e4hk\u00f6iset kassaj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t eiv\u00e4t toimineet. Valitettavasti kummallakaan ei ollut varageneraattoria katkosten varalle. Puolison t\u00f6ihin s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkot eiv\u00e4t varsinaisesti vaikuta, mutta itsell\u00e4ni ty\u00f6t p\u00e4\u00e4ttyiv\u00e4t siihen kun l\u00e4pp\u00e4rist\u00e4 loppui virta. Ty\u00f6paikan varavirtal\u00e4hde kest\u00e4\u00e4 puolisen tuntia, eli se auttaa l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 lyhyiss\u00e4 katkoksissa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tapauksessa maakaapelivaurio aiheutti mittavammat vahingot verkkoon, eik\u00e4 s\u00e4hk\u00f6j\u00e4 voitu kierr\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 samaan tapaan kuin esim s\u00e4\u00e4n aiheuttamissa katkotilanteissa. Vahingosta viisastuneena hankimme s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkojen varalle kaasulieden. Kahden polttimon kaasuliesi riitt\u00e4\u00e4 oivallisesti veden l\u00e4mmitt\u00e4miseen ja ruuan valmistamiseen mik\u00e4li s\u00e4hk\u00f6t ovat pois pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n. Kaasugrilli\u00e4 varten meill\u00e4 on jokatapauksessa aina kotona kaasupullo olemassa, mutta itse grilli\u00e4 ei viitsi rahdata sis\u00e4lle asti. Siksi tuo pienehk\u00f6 kaasuliesi vaikutti hyv\u00e4lt\u00e4 idealta. Ja se k\u00e4y toki muuhunkin puuhaan kuten esim ulkona kasviv\u00e4rj\u00e4yksiin. Uuneissakin toki voi ruokaa laittaa, ja laitetaan normiarjessakin, mutta niiden l\u00e4mpi\u00e4misess\u00e4 kest\u00e4\u00e4 paljon kauemmin, joten kaasuliesi on nopea ratkaisu esim kahvinkeittoon ja \u00e4killisien s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkojen varalta. No, ruokapuoli on siis hoidossa. Ent\u00e4s sitten muut puuhat. P\u00e4\u00e4dyinkin tilaamaan ladattavan retkivalaisimen t\u00e4ydent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n valaistusarsenaaliamme. Lis\u00e4ksi puolison varavirta-akku kaipaa uusimista. Ruuan loppumisesta en lyhyiden parin tunnin tai p\u00e4iv\u00e4n mittaisten katojen suhteen ole huolissani. Pakastin p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4 melko pitk\u00e4\u00e4n jos sit\u00e4 ei turhaan auota. Juomavesi sen sijaan on sellainen asia joka aiheuttaa harmaita hiuksia. En halua ostaa kaupasta vett\u00e4 meille varastoon s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkojen varalle, sill\u00e4 min\u00e4h\u00e4n jo maksan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6vedest\u00e4 joka tulee hanasta. Miksi ostaisin sit\u00e4 siis viel\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4 pullossa? Pid\u00e4n sit\u00e4 rahan haaskauksena, etenkin kun pulloveden mukana tulee joka kerta se muovikanisteri. Juomavett\u00e4 meill\u00e4 ei siis varastoida nyt eik\u00e4 luultavasti tulevaisuudessakaan. Meilt\u00e4 kuitenkin l\u00e4hes aina l\u00f6ytyy jotakin muuta juotavaa jos jano yll\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 ja vedenkeittimess\u00e4kin on yleens\u00e4 aina sen verran vett\u00e4 ett\u00e4 siit\u00e4 saa 2-4 kupillista kuumaa juomaa. Almost exactly a year ago, we got a taste of what life can be like when the power goes out for a longer period of time. In our village, an excavator severed major electric cable. It took about eight hours to repair. Both village shops suffered significant financial losses as food spoiled in their fridges and freezers. They were also unable to keep their shops open because the electronic cash register systems were not working. Unfortunately neither of them had emergency generator to keep the business going. The power outages don’t really affect my spouse’s work directly, but my work ended when my laptop ran out of power. The backup power supply at my workplace lasts for half an hour, so it mainly helps during short outages. The rest of the evening was spent in semi-darkness, which was quite boring. Our phones had enough power, but there wasn’t much we could do in the dark. We might have made sandwiches for dinner, I can’t remember exactly. Or maybe we went to a neighbouring town to eat, because we couldn’t even make coffee at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power outages in our area do not usually last very long, as in most cases the electricity can be rerouted around the fault. In this case, damage to the underground cable caused more extensive damage to the network, and it was not possible to reroute the electricity in the same way as in power outages caused by weather conditions. Having learned from this experience, we purchased a gas stove in case of power outages (gas stoves are not common in Finnish homes in regular use). A two-burner portable gas stove is quite sufficient for boiling water and cooking food if the power is out for a longer period of time. We always have a gas bottle at home for the gas grill, but we don’t want to bring the outside grill itself inside the house. That’s why the small gas stove seemed like a good idea. And of course, it can be used for other things, such as dyeing plants outdoors. So, the food side of things is taken care of. But what about other things? Well, we always have heat, as we have enough fireplaces and enough wood in the woodshed to last for several years. We also have plenty of extra blankets. If necessary, if we happen to manage deep freeze ourselves, we can also heat the sauna, as our sauna is completely electricity-free. It still might be an idea to get emergency blanket just in case. Thin ones you can buy for just couple of euro’s but thicker, sturdier ones are under 20\u20ac.<\/p>\n\n\n

The bigger problem is keeping the family comfortable on dark winter evenings when there is no power. Comfort is related to both hygiene and entertainment. We get water from the water cooperative without electric pump, however the use is not recommended during power outages. Fortunately, we have now solved the toilet problem with dry toilet. You can read more about it here<\/a>. Washing can be postponed for a couple of days if necessary, and wet wipes can be used for small, more urgent hygiene needs. However, commercial wet wipes produce a lot of waste, so I would like to find a more environmentally friendly solution. Would micellar water absorbed into cotton cloths work? However, I am more concerned about how we will pass the time in the evening and whether the lighting will be sufficient. We still have to improve the lighting. We do have a few pocket and headlamps, regular and LED candles, and an oil lamp, but they are not very efficient, and since we’re not used to the smell of traditional oil lamp on regular basis, we don’t want to smell it for very long and only use it in the sauna. I ended up ordering proper camping lamp to improve our arsenal. In addition, my spouse’s backup battery needs to be replaced. We should also get a small battery-powered radio. We usually have batteries in stock because they are needed for many things, such as clocks, flashlights, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not worried about running out of food for a few hours or days. The freezer will last quite a long time if it’s not opened unnecessarily. Drinking water, on the other hand, is something that really baffles me. I don’t want to buy water from the store to stock up in case of power outages, because I already pay for the water that comes out of the tap, which is drinkable. So why would I buy more in bottles? Bottled water also has an expiry date by which it must be used, but since we have tap water, the bottled water ends up unused and is eventually used to water the flowers. I consider it a waste of money, especially since bottled water always comes with a plastic container. So we don’t store drinking water now, and probably won’t in the future either. However, we almost always have something else to drink if we get thirsty, and there is usually enough water in the kettle to make 2-4 cups of hot drinks. What would be a sensible solution to this? Should we start recycling tap water through the refrigerator so that there is always a full jug of water that we can drink from and refill it, instead of taking it straight from the tap to the glass?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

When heating the fireplace, why not cook some delicious porridge, stew, vegetables, gratin, pancake or my favourite oven cheese (baked cheese made of colostrum).
