Alumiinisesta (?) isosta kynttelik\u00f6st\u00e4 oli katkennut kaksi sakaraa. Ehk\u00e4 kynttelikk\u00f6 oli pudonnut ja sakarat katkenneet siin\u00e4 h\u00f6t\u00e4k\u00e4ss\u00e4, mutta onneksi ne olivat poikki vastakkaisilta puolilta, joten kynttelikk\u00f6 oli viel\u00e4 ihan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kelpoinen. Ajattelin ett\u00e4 voisin hiukan silotella katkenneita tynki\u00e4 jotta ei olisi niin silmiinpist\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 ett\u00e4 kaksi sakaraa puuttuu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viilasin ensin isommat murtumaj\u00e4ljet pois molemmilta puolilta. Pehme\u00e4\u00e4n alumiiniin puree varmaan muutkin viilat, mutta oma viilani sattui olemaan metallille tarkoitettu. Metalliviilaa kannattaa tietysti k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 metallisille asioille. Olisin voinut viilata viel\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n pois niin ett\u00e4 j\u00e4ljelle j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4 metallirengas olisi ollut viel\u00e4 tasaisempi, mutta en n\u00e4hnyt sille tarvetta. P\u00e4\u00e4asia oli ett\u00e4 ter\u00e4v\u00e4t reunat ja murtumaj\u00e4ljet poistuivat. Viilauksen j\u00e4lki oli v\u00e4h\u00e4n karkeaa, joten hioin j\u00e4ljen sile\u00e4mm\u00e4ksi vesihiomapapereilla 600c ja 1200c. Lopuksi pyyhin kynttelik\u00f6n kostealla r\u00e4till\u00e4 ja kiillotin sen hopeankiillotukseen tarkoitetulla liinalla. T\u00e4lle kookkaalle kynttelik\u00f6lle tuli hintaa viisi euroa. Kaikki tarvikkeet l\u00f6ytyiv\u00e4t valmiina kotoa. <\/p>\n\n\n

I don’t usually encourage selling broken items at a flea market, but in some cases it can be a good idea. If the item is broken in a way that the breakage does not prevent it from being used or it can be repaired, selling might be just worth it. Even in these cases, the price should always take the defect into account. A piece of wooden furniture which is loose on the joints cannot be priced the same as ones which are in perfect condition, and vintage serving dish with a chip on it cannot be sold nearly as much as a perfectly intact one. Although minor scratches usually have no effect on the use of the object, a larger breakage will almost always reduce the price of the object to atleast half, and in some cases by even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that said, I did buy a broken candlestick at a flea market for a very reasonable price. This large candlestick was made of aluminium (?) and had two broken arms. Maybe it had fallen off the table and the two arms had broken off due to fall. Luckily they were broken on opposite sides, so the candlestick was still quite usable. I thought I could smooth the broken bits a bit so it wouldn’t be so obvious that two of the arms were missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first filed off the sharp fracture marks on both sides. Other files will probably bite into soft aluminium, but mine happened to be a metal file. Of course, best option is to use metal file for metal things. I could have filed off even more so that the remaining metal ring would have been even smoother, but I didn’t see the need. The main thing was that the sharp edges and fracture marks were removed. The filing left scratch marks, so I sanded it with 600c and 1200c water sandpaper. Finally, I wiped the candlestick with a damp cloth and polished it with a silver polishing cloth. The price for this large candlestick was five euros. All of the tools and accessories I already had at home.<\/p>\n\n\n
