Omenapuut t\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 on kaadettu ja on vaikea uskoa ett\u00e4 isossa maalaistalossa ei olisi ollut kuin pari marjapensasta. Mutta talon nurkalla on kuitenkin melko nuori, huonosti hoidettu kelta-kriikunapuu ja sen vieress\u00e4 toinen viel\u00e4 pienempi, v\u00e4h\u00e4n runneltu punainen kriikunapuu. Ne tuottivat viime syksyn\u00e4 jo melko mukavasti satoa. Kriikunat ovat parhaimmillaan tuoreena, sellaisenaan sy\u00f6tyn\u00e4, mutta niist\u00e4 saa my\u00f6s herkullisia rommiluumuja ja toki muitakin s\u00e4ilykkeit\u00e4. Onhan meill\u00e4 tosiaan my\u00f6s kirsikkapuita, per\u00e4ti 15 kappaletta. Ne ovat edellisen asukkaan kaadattaman koristekirsikan (?) juurivesoja ja suuri osa niist\u00e4 on niin pieni\u00e4 etteiv\u00e4t edes kuki viel\u00e4. Tuottavat hedelm\u00e4\u00e4 minimaalisesti kukkam\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n n\u00e4hden ja kirsikat ovat pieni\u00e4 ja pahan makuisia. Niist\u00e4 aion hankkiutua eroon t\u00e4n\u00e4 kev\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4, sill\u00e4 ne kasvavat kaiken lis\u00e4ksi liian liki talon sein\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muuttaessamme Havum\u00e4keen, toimme mukanamme kaksi marjapensasta: mustaherukan ja  karviaisen, jotka molemmat saimme kavereilta edellisen asuntomme pihaa varten. Luulimme nimitt\u00e4in, ett\u00e4 talon pihassa ei ollut lainkaan marjapensaita. Tarkempi tutkiskelu on kuitenkin osoittanut ett\u00e4 kyll\u00e4 t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 marjapensaita on. Nimitt\u00e4in alkuper\u00e4isten marjapensaiden j\u00e4lkel\u00e4isi\u00e4. Ne ovat luultavasti lintujen kylv\u00e4mi\u00e4, sill\u00e4 kasvavat omituisissa paikoissa: orapihlaja-aidan tyvess\u00e4, talon kivijalan juuressa, liiterin kulmalla, ison kiven juurella. No totta puhuakseni on t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 ihan oikeita istutettujakin marjapensaita. Talon pohjoisen puoleisella sivulla on ainakin ollut kolme mustaherukkapensasta. Kaksi niist\u00e4 oli leikattu maata my\u00f6den alas ja vain toinen alasleikatuista oli en\u00e4\u00e4 hengiss\u00e4. Tosin siin\u00e4kin oli vain pient\u00e4 elonmerkki\u00e4. Kolmas el\u00e4\u00e4 ja voi melko hyvin, mutta varjossa pohjoisen puolella taloa se ei tuota satoa kovin hyvin. Talon ja tien v\u00e4liin j\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4ll\u00e4 pienell\u00e4 kaistaleella, kirsikkapuiden varjossa ja liian l\u00e4hell\u00e4 talon sein\u00e4\u00e4 kasvaa yksi punaviinimarjapensas. Kirvat sy\u00f6v\u00e4t sen lehdet joka vuosi ja rastaat sy\u00f6v\u00e4t kaikki marjat puoliraakoina. Paikkakaan ei ole sille paras mahdollinen ja muutenkin pid\u00e4n itse enemm\u00e4n mustaherukoista. En ole viel\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4nyt mik\u00e4 sen kohtalo on, toki tarvitsevathan linnutkin ruokaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pid\u00e4n kovasti siit\u00e4 ajatuksesta ett\u00e4 p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4mme itse tehdyill\u00e4 mehuilla l\u00e4hes koko vuoden. Se v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 kaupasta rahdattavan tavaran m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4 ja pienent\u00e4\u00e4 ruokalaskua. Viimeinen mehupullo on jo menossa, mutta pakastimessa on viel\u00e4 tyrni\u00e4, josta aion tehd\u00e4 viel\u00e4 tyrnimehua, sill\u00e4 raparperimehukausi ei ole viel\u00e4 avattu. Minulla on jo omena- ja p\u00e4\u00e4ryn\u00e4puille paikka katsottuna, mutta se vaatii jonkin verran raivausta, sill\u00e4 nyt siin\u00e4 kasvaa koivuja ja vaahteroita sek\u00e4 villiintynytt\u00e4 orapihlajaa. Viinimarjapensaat ovat siit\u00e4 kiitollisia kasvatettavia, ett\u00e4 niiden lis\u00e4ys taivukkaista on ainakin teoriassa helppoa. Lis\u00e4ksi ostin paikalliselta rouvalta kaksi hyv\u00e4n kokoista mustaherukan astiatainta viime syksyn\u00e4. Talvetin ne kyljell\u00e4\u00e4n lavakauluksessa ja niiss\u00e4 on jo lehdet tuloillaan. Pian pit\u00e4\u00e4 etsi\u00e4 niille ja taivukkaille lopullinen istutuspaikka. Pit\u00e4isi kuitenkin v\u00e4h\u00e4n skarpata ja muistaa my\u00f6s lannoittaa pensaita, jotta ne tuottaisivat paremmin. Syksyisin ja kev\u00e4ttalvella levit\u00e4n pihaan puutuhkaa, jota meill\u00e4 talvella kertyy enemm\u00e4n kuin tarpeeksi. Marjapensaiden kattamiseen olen k\u00e4ytt\u00e4nyt kutterinpurua, ruohosilppua ja lampaanvillaa jota olen saanut ilmaiseksi remontista, ruohonleikkuusta ja naapurista. Silti tarvittaisiin viel\u00e4 lis\u00e4ksi lannoitetta. Bokashistahan meill\u00e4 tulee lannoitteeksi soveltuvaa nestett\u00e4, pit\u00e4isi vaan muistaa ja jaksaa toimittaa se keitti\u00f6st\u00e4 tuonne puutarhan puolelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oma hedelm\u00e4tarha on minulle paitsi t\u00e4rke\u00e4 mehujen ja helppojen v\u00e4lipalojen ja pikkuherkkujen l\u00e4hde, my\u00f6s unelmien t\u00e4yttymys ja henkinen voimavara. Onko mit\u00e4\u00e4n ihanampaa kuin istua kukkivien omenapuiden alla kahvilla, lukemassa tai ihan vain haaveilemassa? Siit\u00e4 viel\u00e4 himpun verran ihanampaa on juoda oman omenapuun tuottamaa mehua ja herkutella omista kirsikoista tehdyll\u00e4 kirsikkahillolla. I&#8217;m a big consumer of juices, berries and fruit. Unfortunately, the previous tenant has cut down almost all the berry bushes and fruit trees in the garden of our house. The apple trees here have been cut down and it&#8217;s hard to believe that a big farmhouse wouldn&#8217;t have had more than a few berry bushes. However, there is a rather young, poorly cared for yellow damson tree on the corner of the house and another even smaller, somewhat battered red damson next to it. They already produced a fairly nice crop last Autumn. They are at their best fresh, eaten as they are, but they also make delicious rum plums and, of course, other preserves. We also have cherry trees, all 15 of them. They are the root sprouts of a decorative cherry plant (?) cut down by a previous tenant and many of them are so small they don&#8217;t even blossom yet. They produce very little fruit for the number of flowers and the cherries are very small and bad-tasting. I am going to get rid of them this spring as they are growing too close to the wall of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we moved to Pinehill, we brought two berry bushes with us: a blackcurrant and a gooseberry, both of which we got from friends for the garden of our previous apartment. We thought there were no berry bushes in the yard of the house at all. However, further investigation has shown that there are berry bushes. The descendants of the original berry bushes, that is. They were probably sown by birds, because they grow in strange places: at the bottom of the hawthorn hedge row, by the stone base of the house, at the corner of the wood shed, by a large stone. Well, to be honest, there are some real planted berry bushes too. There were at least three blackcurrant bushes on the north side of the house. Two of them had been cut down to the ground and only one of the cut ones was still alive. And that was alive just barely and showed only a small sign of life. The third is alive and doing quite well, but in the shade on the north side of the house it is not giving very good harvest. There is also one red wine berry bush on a small strip of land between the house and the road, in the shade of the cherry trees and too close to the wall of the house. The aphids eat its leaves every year and the thrushes eat all the berries raw. It&#8217;s not the best place for it either and I prefer blackcurrants myself anyway. Rosehip pure is excellent addition to the wintery jam selection.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>I really like the idea that we can make do with homemade juices for most of the year. The last bottle of juice is almost gone. There&#8217;s still some sea buckthorn in the freezer, which I&#8217;m going to make more sea buckthorn juice from, as rhubarb juice season hasn&#8217;t opened yet. Funny enough, the magazines have already been advertising rhubarb mead recipes for the Mayday a couple of weeks ago. Well, I guess you can make it from frozen chunks too. Shop-bought juices are good too, especially fresh ones. However, they do produce a lot of packaging waste, as I do drink a lot of juice. A litre carton of fresh juice can be empty in 1-2 days. I haven&#8217;t done the maths, but I think I also save quite a bit of money by making my own juice and reusing the same glass bottles every year. Except for the apple juice. I have that pressed at a local juice station. It costs about \u20ac2.90 a litre when pasteurised, but the apple juice from my mother&#8217;s apple trees is something else. With a strong cinnamon flavour, pressed from cinnamon apples, it&#8217;s the kind of luxury juice you can&#8217;t get in the shops. I&#8217;m happy to pay a little extra for it. I have considered buying my own juicer and crusher, but the whole set-up, including the pasteuriser, is quite expensive. I quickly calculated that if I drank two litres of apple juice a week the equipment would pay for itself in about two years though, if I bought the cheapest equipment available. Of course, to store the apple juice, you would also have to buy vacuum tap bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EDIT- after the publishing the post I decided to add a small paragraph here because I completely forgot that we do have small aronia bushes growing. Like everything else on this garden, they were cut down by the previous tenant, so they are still quite small. The growing area is a bit poor and somewhat shady. Last year they produced their first decent crop, but I didn&#8217;t have the energy to harvest them and I don&#8217;t really know what to do with them. As a berry, it&#8217;s too dry and bitter for my taste, and the chokeberry juice and jam my mother used to make were nothing to write home about. So I&#8217;ll have to do more research on how to make use of them. But at least the birds got some autumnal food. I&#8217;ve also been dreaming of an edible fruit producing actinidia vines but that&#8217;s still in the planning stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plans<\/strong>: I have said it many times, I am dreaming of a vibrantly red Baya Marisa apple tree, a pear tree, a cherry tree and a few blackcurrant bushes. I already have a place for the apple and pear trees in mind, but it will require some clearing as it is now overgrown with birch and maple trees and hawthorn. So I may have to wait a few more years for fruit trees. But for the berry bushes, I already have work in progress. Two years ago I put a couple of blackcurrant branches from an old blackcurrant bush, on the northern side of the house, into the ground to take root. It wasn&#8217;t particularly complicated, as the old blackcurrant varieties naturally bend towards the ground anyway. I just added some soil and stones to keep the branches in place. What makes currant bushes so rewarding to grow is that they are easy to propagate from the branches, at least in theory. I also bought two good-sized blackcurrants from a local lady last fall. I wintered them on their sides in a grow box and they already have leaves. Soon I&#8217;ll have to find a final planting place for them and the other branches. However, I should pull myself together a bit and also remember to fertilize the bushes so that they produce better. In Autumn and early Spring I spread wood ash in the garden, which we get more than enough over the Winter. On the base of the berry bushes I have used woodchip, grass and sheep&#8217;s wool, which I got free of charge from our house renovation, mowing the lawn and from our neighbour. In addition to those, fertilizer is needed. We have bokashi, which gives liquid that can be used as fertilizer, however I just have to remember to take it from the kitchen to the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own fruit garden is very important to me, not just for getting delicious juices, snacks and delicacies, but it&#8217;s also the fulfillment of my dreams and important to my mental health. Is there anything better than sit under the blooming apple tree, reading, drinking coffee or just dreaming? And even more wonderful is to be drinking your own apple juice or have that delicious cherry jam you made yourself.
