Jokainen kirppiksi\u00e4 ahkerasti kiertelev\u00e4 on todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isesti n\u00e4hnyt vanhoja kulmikkaita puisia henkareita. Anyone who loves to rummage around in thrift shops has probably seen old angular wooden clothing hangers at flea markets. You’ll probably find them in your grandparents’ wardrobes too. I have couple of them, although I have actively tried to get rid of them. Before the development of modern plastic and metal hangers, almost all everyday hangers were these angular wooden hangers. They were easy and cheap to make out of wood and a piece of metal wire. However, they are by no means particularly pleasant to use. The wood is sometimes rough and splintery and sticks to the fabric. Sometimes the hangers are asymmetrical, twisted or cracked. The metal hook will fall down when the hanger is lifted, if the wooden tube has broken off. The angled wooden hanger leaves unpleasant stretch marks on the shoulders of the garment. Those who had the time, covered the wooden hangers with crocheted covers. Sometimes you could even find more decorative luxury hangers, covered with padding and fabric. So instead of throwing these hangers away, I decided to turn them into padded luxury hangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These padded hangers are now sold ready-made, although in the past you often had to pad them yourself. Usually the padding is covered with a smooth and slippery satin, which in my opinion is not the best material for hangers. It’s fine for some clothes, but many clothes will slide off. I chose fabrics and padding that I already had in my stash, as I have plenty of all kinds of material in stock. You can use wadding, readymade quilted materials, pillow stuffing or even just strips of fabric wrapped round the hanger. You can use ready-made ribbon for the cover. Or any kind of left-over fabric, as the amount needed is not very big. Even plain jersey is fine, as it’s easier to get it to fit smoothly than an non-stretchy fabric, but a very thin jersey can be too translucent and floppy to make a pretty result. So it’s worth choosing a slightly sturdier jersey, for example the hem of an old promotional t-shirt (they often have good quality fabrics) is perfect. You can also cut the non-stretchy material in bias, if you want very smooth result, but small creases don’t really matter. <\/p>\n\n\n
