Talvella olen v\u00e4lill\u00e4 hiukan pulassa sill\u00e4 en k\u00e4yt\u00e4 ollenkaan pipoja. En pid\u00e4 siit\u00e4 mille pipo n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4, eik\u00e4 tiukasti p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4 my\u00f6t\u00e4ilev\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4hine koskaan sovi kampausteni kanssa yhteen. Kiharaisen vintagekampauksen kanssa sopi parhaiten baskeri, mutta viime aikoina suosimani p\u00e4\u00e4laki-ponnarin tai lettikruunun kanssa baskeri n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 jokseenkin hassulle. Usein kiedon pitk\u00e4n huivin p\u00e4\u00e4n ymp\u00e4ri, mutta se tahtoo aina valua ja hyvin pian se onkin jo pudonnut p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 niskaan. Siksi t\u00e4ytyi ryhty\u00e4 miettim\u00e4\u00e4n muunlaisia vaihtoehtoja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen bongannut viktoriaanisen ja edwardiaanisen ajan kuvastossa erilaisia l\u00f6ysi\u00e4 myssyj\u00e4, kuten j\u00e4ttikokoisia v\u00e4lji\u00e4 tam o’shanter-tyyppisi\u00e4 baskereita tai myssyj\u00e4 ja monenlaisia irtohuppuja. Tam O’Shanter-myssyt olivat alunperin skotlantilaisia miesten hattuja. Suippok\u00e4rkiset myssyt tai huppup\u00e4\u00e4hineet taas on kuvattu p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa lasten tai satuhahmojen, kuten tonttujen tai noitien p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4. Noista j\u00e4ttibaskereista en hirve\u00e4sti innostu, joten olen pohtinut suippomyssyn tekemist\u00e4. Neuloen sellaisesta saisi ihanan kuviollisen, mutta ajattelin kuitenkin tehd\u00e4 ensimm\u00e4isen version ommellen, jotta saan helpommin testattua sen kokoa ja muotoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4h\u00e4n halloweenhenkiseen koe-versioon k\u00e4ytin jemmakasasta l\u00f6ytynytt\u00e4 puuvillaista samettimekkoa, jonka joku on minulle joskus lahjoittanut. Siit\u00e4 on jo aiemmin silputtu pala helmasta ja muutenkin se oli hiukan huonokuntoinen, joten raaskin sen t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa ottaa uusiok\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. Kaavan pohjana k\u00e4ytin t\u00e4t\u00e4 ilmaista kaavaa<\/a>. Vuorikankaaksi k\u00e4ytin mustaa pellavaa ja vuorin n\u00e4kyv\u00e4\u00e4n osaan jotakin vanhan nahkatakin vuoria jossa oli mieleinen v\u00e4ris\u00e4vy. Olisin oikeasti halunnut hehkuvampaa oranssia, mutta sit\u00e4 ei ollut varastossa valmiina enk\u00e4 halunnut t\u00e4t\u00e4 varten ostaa mit\u00e4\u00e4n. Eik\u00e4 aikaakaan kun pihamaallamme jo liihotteli noita kekribisneksi\u00e4 hoitamassa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samalla haluan hiukan muistuttaa er\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 asiasta, joka n\u00e4in\u00e4 kr\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4sesonkien aikoina helposti unohtuu, kun kaupat ovat pullollaan kaikenlaista hauskaa ja n\u00e4tti\u00e4 h\u00e4rp\u00e4kett\u00e4. Tuhansia tonneja halloween- ja joulukr\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4rr\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n vuosittain kaatopaikoille. Instagramin ja TikTokin my\u00f6t\u00e4 sesonkitavaran trendikkyys on noussut t\u00e4rke\u00e4ksi tekij\u00e4ksi joten edellisvuoden trendi-koristeet ovat t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna niin out. Tiktok on t\u00e4ynn\u00e4 “halloween-haul”-videoita joissa ihmiset esittelev\u00e4t s\u00e4kkikaupalla (!) ostamaansa halloween-kamaa. Tarvitseeko joku todella erillisen halloween-saippuapumpun ihan vaan paria viikkoa varten? Suomessakin kertak\u00e4ytt\u00f6isyys n\u00e4kyy jo esim FB:n kirppisryhmiss\u00e4. Olen jo perjantaina n\u00e4hnyt halloween-tavaraa myynniss\u00e4 “eteenp\u00e4in seuraaviin juhliin”. Eli ihmiset todellakin ostavat yht\u00e4 ainoaa tapahtumaa varten tavaraa, joka pistet\u00e4\u00e4n heti eteenp\u00e4in, joko roskiin tai kirppikselle. Kirppistely on toki hyv\u00e4 tapa, mutta silti voisi hetkeksi pys\u00e4hty\u00e4 miettim\u00e4\u00e4n voisiko saman tavaran k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 vaikkapa ensi vuonna uudelleen? Itse en t\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna koristellut kekri\u00e4 varten juuri yht\u00e4\u00e4n, mutta silloin kun koristelen, teen paljon koristeita itse ja pyrin varmistamaan ett\u00e4 ostamani koristeet ovat omaan tyyliin sopivia ja ett\u00e4 ne ovat kest\u00e4vi\u00e4 jotta ne on mahdollista varastoida ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6hemmin uudelleen. Tai vaihtoehtoisesti koristeet voivat olla luonnosta ker\u00e4ttyj\u00e4 ja ne voi kompostoida bileiden j\u00e4lkeen. Juhliminen ja koristeista nauttiminen ei siis tarkoita etteik\u00f6 voisi hankkia koristeita. Mieti ennen ostoa, haluatko k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 samaa koristetta jatkossakin vai voisitko tehd\u00e4 sen itse. Tehd\u00e4\u00e4n kest\u00e4vi\u00e4 valintoja my\u00f6s juhlap\u00e4ivin\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the winter I am sometimes a bit troubled because I don’t wear modern beanies at all. I don’t like the way modern beanies look like and the tightly head-hugging style doesn’t go with my hairstyles. Beret goes best with curly vintage style, but my other favourite hairstyles, top-of-the-head messy bun and milkmaid braids look rather goofy with beret. Quite often I tie my long scarf around my head, but that falls off quite quickly. And so I am forced to think other options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I have been browzing Victorian and Edwardian winter, I have noticed loose oversized tam o’shanter-style berets and pointy fabric bonnets or hoods. Tam o’shanters were originally Scottish men’s hats. Pointy bonnets were mainly pictured on kids or fairytale characters, like elves or witches. I’m not overly excited about oversized beret, so I have been thinking about making pointy bonnet. Knitted fair-isle-style would be adorable, but I thought it might be best to make the first version from wool fabric. That way I am able to adjust the size and shape a bit better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used cotton velvet dress from my stash to make this bonnet. It was gifted to me long time ago. Hem was already missing a piece, and it wasn’t in very good condition, so I dared to chop it up for the hat. I used this free pattern<\/a> as a base for the pattern. I used black linen for the lining and old leather jacket lining for the visible areas of the lining. I would have actually preferred flaming orange, but I didn’t have any at hand, and I didn’t want to buy anything for this. And it didn’t take much long for a witch to appear on our yard, to do their halloween business or what-not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would also like to remind you of something that is easily forgotten during these festive seasons, when stores are filled with all kinds of fun and pretty trinkets. Thousands of tons of Halloween and Christmas decorations are dumped in landfills every year. Instagram and TikTok push forward lot of seasonal trends which have become an important factor for people. Last year’s trendy decorations are so out this year. Tiktok is full of “halloween haul”-videos where people are showing sackloads (!) of halloween stuff they have bought. I mean, does someone really need separate soap dispenser for couple weeks? In Finland, too, disposability is already evident in for example Facebook flea market groups. On Friday, I already saw Halloween items for sale “for the next party.” So people really are buying items for a single event, which are then immediately discarded, either in the rubbish bin or sold on thrift groups or flea markets. Flea markets are certainly a good option, but it is worth considering whether the same items could be reused next year. I didn’t decorate much for Halloween this year, but when I do decorate, I make a lot of the decorations myself and try to make sure that if I buy anything they suit my style and are durable so that they can be stored and reused later. Alternatively, the decorations can be collected from nature and composted after the party. So partying and enjoying the seasonal decoration doesn’t mean that you can’t buy anything, but think before buying. Do you want to use the same decoration in the future too or could you even make it yourself. Let’s make longlasting choises also during holiday season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
