Joskus aikoja sitten blogiin toivottiin postauksia asusteista, joiden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 on nykyisin vain marginaalista. Niinp\u00e4 ajattelin nyt kertoa teille v\u00e4h\u00e4n sukkanauhoista. Nykyisin sukkanauhan voi oikeastaan n\u00e4hd\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 ainoastaan h\u00e4\u00e4p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4, jolloin morsiamella saattaa olla koristeellinen kuminauha-sukkanauha jalassaan. Sukkanauhan tarkoitus on siis nykyisin l\u00e4hes yksinomaan esteettinen ja sukkanauhan riisuminen ja heitto on h\u00e4\u00e4juhlan ohjelmanumero siin\u00e4 miss\u00e4 h\u00e4\u00e4kimpunkin heitto. Alun perin sukkanauhoilla on kuitenkin ollut aivan todellinen funktionaalinen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tarkoituksensa, eli sukkien pit\u00e4minen ylh\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ennen elastaanin ja kuminauhojen keksimist\u00e4 pitk\u00e4t sukat oli neulottu (usein k\u00e4sin) villasta, puuvillasta tai silkist\u00e4, eik\u00e4 niiss\u00e4 ollut mit\u00e4\u00e4n mik\u00e4 pit\u00e4isi niit\u00e4 ylh\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4. Kaikki elastaanittomat neulokset nimitt\u00e4in l\u00f6ps\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4t k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 ja alkavat ennenpitk\u00e4\u00e4 valua. Siksi pitkiin sukkiin tarvittiin sukkanauhat. Sukkanauhain k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 ei rajoittunut ainoastaan naisiin. Sukkanauhoja on valmistettu monilla eri tekniikoilla. Aateliset k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t tietysti hienompia materiaaleja ja kalliimpia k\u00e4sity\u00f6tekniikoita omissa sukkanauhoissaan. Niiss\u00e4 saattoi olla koristeellisia silkkiruusukkeita ja muita n\u00e4ytt\u00e4vi\u00e4 koristeita kuten kultakirjailua. Yht\u00e4 lailla talonpoikaisilla saattoi olla koristeelliset, kauniit sukkanauhat ja joidenkin maiden miesten kansallispukuihin kuuluukin hienoja pompulakoristeisia sukkanauhoja. Erilaisia sukkanauhamalleja saattoivat olla vaikkapa silkkiset kirjaillut nauhat, villaiset tai puuvillaiset neulotut tai ristikkonauhat, lautanauhat tai pirtanauhat. Sukkanauhat oli helppo valmistaa itse vaikkapa lahjaksi ja niihin saattoi kirjailla onnentoivotuksia, rukouksia tai lahjansaajan nimen. My\u00f6hemmin teollisen kehityksen my\u00f6t\u00e4, my\u00f6s sukkanauhoihin kehitettiin erilaisia solkia ja s\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6mekanismeja niiden kirist\u00e4miseksi ja niihin saatiin lis\u00e4\u00e4 mukavuutta kun kumin keksimisen ansiosta nauhoista voitiin tehd\u00e4 joustavia. Long time ago, readers have requested for posts about accessories, which are now only marginally used. So now I thought I’d tell you a bit about garters. Nowadays, you can really only see a garter in use on the wedding day, when the bride might be wearing a decorative rubber band garter. The purpose of the garter is therefore now almost exclusively aesthetic, and the removal and throwing the garter is as much a feature of the wedding reception as the throwing of the wedding bouquet. Originally, however, garters had a very real functional purpose, to hold up socks and stockings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the invention of elastane and rubber bands, long socks and stockings were knittet (often by hand) from wool, cotton or silk, with nothing to hold them up. All knitted fabrics without elastane, loosen and stretch in use and sooner or later start to fall down. That’s why the long socks and stockings needed garters. The use of garters was not limited to women. It is not known exactly when garters began to be used, but even in the early Middle Ages, men’s fashion required knee-length socks and they were tied at the knee with garters.<\/p>\n\n\n

Men’s garter from 50’s-60’s. I have worn these with knee socks under skirt or trousers. They are quite fun accessory and it doesn’t matter if they show every now and then from under the skirt. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

There are many different techniques for making garters. The nobility, of course, used finer materials and more expensive craft techniques for their garters. They may have had decorative rosettes and other elaborate trimmings like gold embroidery. However also working class and peasants may have had ornate, beautiful garters. In some countries men’s national costumes include decorative garters with pompoms. The different types of garters could be embroidered silk garters, wool or cotton knitted, braided or different types of woven garters (tablet, heddle etc). Some garters had some elasticity due to the chosen technique but many were completely non-elastic. The garters were easy to make at home, for example as a gift, and you could embroider congratulations, prayers or names on them. Later, with the industrial developement, garters got different types of buckles and adjustment mechanisms to tighten them and became more comfortable as the invention of rubber made them flexible. Garters were still commonly worn by gentlemen in the 50s and 60s, they were just hidden under the trouser legs. Today, of course, stylish suit-wearing men can still wear garters around their legs if they want to make sure their long socks don’t fall down to their ankles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For women, the garters around the leg have been replaced by garter belts. I don’t know the exact time when garters were replaced by garter belts, but sometime in the late 1800’s it was when corsets started to extend from the waist down to the hips. First the long garters with clips were attached to the bottom of the corset and later, with the development of the girdle, they were attached to the bottom of the girdle. The girdle later evolved into more delicate and lighter garter belt. The purpose of the girdle was also to shape the waist and hips, but the garter belt’s sole purpose is to hold the stockings up. At its most modest, it is just a thin elastic band around the waist with garter clips hanging from it. Garter belts usually have 2 to 8 small clips at the ends of narrow elastic bands to which the stockings are attached. Contrary to what is usually shown in advertising catalogues, underpants are worn over garter belts, especially if the underwear is well-covering garment. Otherwise it is difficult to manage when you have to use the loo.<\/p>\n\n\n

First garters were attached to corset. This corset reaches from under bust well over the hips. Garters are attached on the bottom edge and stockings are clipped on with small garter clips. Because this corset reaches quite low over the hips, garters are short. 1800’s corsets were much shorter so garters were much longer. Stockings also might have been shorter, because skirts were longer, so nothing could be seen. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

Young girls stockings were held up by jersey top, which had long cotton ribbons from shoulder to the hem. Most simple garters were piece of cotton ribbon with buttons. Stockings had buttonholes and they were buttoned up to the top-garters. This top in the photo has extended garters.
