Nypl\u00e4ys on yksi kiehtovimpia k\u00e4sity\u00f6tekniikoita joita tied\u00e4n. Taitavat nypl\u00e4\u00e4j\u00e4t ovat niin nopeita, ett\u00e4 silm\u00e4 tuskin erottaa nypyl\u00f6iden liikett\u00e4 k\u00e4siss\u00e4 kun ne vaihtavat salaman nopeasti paikkaa ja pitsi\u00e4 muodostuu neulojen v\u00e4liin. Itse olen hidas nypl\u00e4\u00e4j\u00e4, v\u00e4h\u00e4n sellainen nautiskelija. Nypyl\u00f6iden hipel\u00f6inti on melko meditatiivista, sellaista mihin pit\u00e4\u00e4 keskitty\u00e4 ettei tule virheit\u00e4. Olen jonkin verran nypl\u00e4nnyt tv:t\u00e4 katsellessa, mutta kyll\u00e4 siin\u00e4 syntyy enemm\u00e4n virheit\u00e4 kuin kunnollista pitsi\u00e4. Parasta onkin k\u00e4yd\u00e4 kerran viikossa nypl\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 kansalaisopiston kurssilla. Se on v\u00e4h\u00e4n sellaista omaa aikaa, jossa k\u00e4yn oikeastaan enemm\u00e4n rentoutumassa kuin saamassa aikaiseksi mit\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aloin nypl\u00e4t\u00e4 M\u00e4nts\u00e4l\u00e4n kansallispuvun pitsi\u00e4 syksyll\u00e4 2019<\/a>. Se valmistui kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2024. Tosin siin\u00e4 v\u00e4liss\u00e4 oli korona-tauko, jolloin en oikeastaan nypl\u00e4nnyt ollenkaan. Lis\u00e4ksi pidin oma-aloitteisen tauon M\u00e4nts\u00e4l\u00e4n pitsist\u00e4 tekem\u00e4ll\u00e4 v\u00e4lity\u00f6n\u00e4 kaitaliinaa. Vaikka kansallispuvun p\u00e4\u00e4hineeseen tuli pitsi\u00e4 ainoastaan 90 cm niin pakko sanoa ett\u00e4 oli se aikamoinen rutistus kaiken kaikkiaan. Loppuvaiheessa aloin jo ty\u00f6l\u00e4sty\u00e4 koko hommaan, mutta sitke\u00e4sti rutistin sen loppuun. Leve\u00e4mm\u00e4n pitsin vastapainoksi halusin ottaa seuraavaksi ty\u00f6ksi kapeaa koristepitsi\u00e4. Tavoilleni uskollisena en kuitenkaan t\u00e4ss\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n mennyt siit\u00e4 mist\u00e4 aita on matalin. Langaksi valitsin hopealangan joka on \u00e4lytt\u00f6m\u00e4n liukasta ja niinp\u00e4 eniten aikaa kuluukin valuvien nypyl\u00f6iden takaisinpuolaamiseen. Haaveilen nypl\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4ni hopeapitsi\u00e4 niin paljon ett\u00e4 siit\u00e4 riitt\u00e4\u00e4 jonkin historiallisen puvun koristeeksi. Eli v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n 10 metri\u00e4. Saapa n\u00e4hd\u00e4 miten k\u00e4y, loppuuko innostus ennenkuin viisi metri\u00e4 on t\u00e4ynn\u00e4. Vaikka pitsi on n\u00e4in kapea ja simppeli, niin t\u00e4ss\u00e4kin opin taas uusia asioita eli nirkon nypl\u00e4\u00e4misen sek\u00e4 jamikan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ei tuo joululiinaksi aikomani kaitaliinakaan ole viel\u00e4 valmis, mutta jos t\u00e4ksi jouluksi saisi sen viimeistelty\u00e4. Normaalista tyylist\u00e4ni poiketen halusin tehd\u00e4 mahdollisimman paksusta ja ep\u00e4tasaisesta pellavalangasta melko rustiikkisen pitsiliinan. Hankin t\u00e4m\u00e4n toisen nypl\u00e4ystyynyn siksi ett\u00e4 voisin tehd\u00e4 vuorotellen kahta erilaista ty\u00f6t\u00e4, jos kyll\u00e4stys iskee toiseen. Ja \u00e4idin j\u00e4\u00e4mist\u00f6ist\u00e4 l\u00f6ytyi viel\u00e4 yksi tyyny, joten voisin vaihdella kolmen eri ty\u00f6n v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Ehk\u00e4 se vaihdon mahdollisuus tulee tarpeeseen siin\u00e4 vaiheessa kun kyll\u00e4styn tuohon hopeapitsiin. <\/p>\n\n\n

Bobbin lace is one of the most fascinating handcrafting technique I know. Skilled makers can do it so fast that you can barely see bobbins on their hands. Bobbins swap places really fast. I am slow maker of bobbin lace. The kind of holiday lacemaker. Fiddling the bobbins on your hands is kind of meditative thing, the kind of job you really have to concentrate on. I have done some lace while watching telly, but that usually results more mistakes than proper lace. So I’d rather go to lace course once a week than do it at home, but to be honest it’s more to relax than actually achieve anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started making M\u00e4nts\u00e4l\u00e4 region lace in the Autumn 2019. I finished it in spring 2024. Allthough there was also covid-break, when I didn’t really do any bobbin lace at all. I also took some time off, to make linen table cloth. Even though the national costume of M\u00e4nts\u00e4l\u00e4 only has 90 cm of lace, boy oh boy, did that take some doing. At the end I was starting to get quite fed up with it, but I didn’t give up. So now I am doing quite the opposite, very narrow trimming lace. However, being true to my habbits, I didn’t chose the easiest path this time either. My yarn is silver yarn, which is actually rather slippy on the bobbins. So most of my time is wasted on re-spooling the yarn onto the bobbins. I am dreaming of making enough lace for historical costume. atleast 10 meters, hopefully more than that. But we will see how it goes. Do you loos the interest after 5 meters? Even though the lace is very simple, it has already given me new things to learn, like how to make knotted picot and reverse half stitch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table runner I was planning for Christmas past is not ready yet, but perhaps I manage to finish it for this Christmas. Against my usual style, I wanted it to be as thick and uneven yarn as possible. I like the rough look of it. I bought this second bobbin pillow so that I could do two different laces at the same time. So when ever I get bored of one, I can swap for another. And I found third pillow from mums handcrafting stuff, so now I can have three works at the same time. Perhaps the option for swapping to different lace comes in handy when I get fed up with the silver lace. <\/p>\n\n\n

At the moment I am doing narrow silver lace. If I manage to make enough, it will probably be a decoration on a historical gown. Silver thread is annoyingly slippery, mostly I just keep adjusting hanging bobbins and tightening the threads, than making the actual lace. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n
