Aitoihin eglomise-tauluihin liimataan lehtikultaa gelatiinin avulla. Liimasin foliot kevyesti valokuvakehyksen taustapahviin ja leikkasin ylimääräiset pois reunoilta. Maalausten kuivuttua kokosin kehykset varovasti. Niistä tuli ihan just jetsulleen sellaiset kuin halusinkin! Seuraavaksi haluan testata tätä lyöntimetallilla, jolloin metalli on lasissa kiinni sileämmin. Hyvää kekriä!

You might have seen black and silver paintings in museums or perhaps even at second hand shops. The background of the painting is plain black and the letters and pictures are silver or gold, perhaps a bit wrinkly looking. In Finland these tinpaper paintings often had religious aphorisms on them and they were made at the end of 1800’s and early 1900’s. In other countries you might have seen all sorts of pictures, made with similar technique. According to one story, this version of the technique came to Finland with Russian soldiers, but originally verre eglomise is actually French, invented by art dealer and picture framer Jean Baptiste Glomy, in the 1700’s. Verre eglomise means glass guilding technique, where picture is painted as mirror image on the backside of the glass. These Finnish aphorism paintings are the poor mans versions of the real verre eglomise, because instead of gold or silver leaf, wrinkly tin- or silverpaper was used.

This technique has been fascinating me for quite some time now and in my opinion the combination of black and silver suits perfectly to the Halloween. So I decided to try my hand at verre eglomise for the halloween- themed little paintings. I thrifted these two little picture frames for the try out. First I searched for two little silhouette pictures and printed them 1:1 on paper, notice that the pictures have to be mirror images. After that I opened the picture frames and cleaned the reverse side of glass with alcohol. I placed the glass ontop of the pictures and used painters tape to hold it in place. Pictures were quite detailed and small, so I decided to use very fine brushes. Paint I had already in stock, it’s regular acrylic crafting paint. Originally they used carbon black, also known as lamp black.

I traced the picture edges with the very fine brush and then coloured the rest with slightly bigger brush. Smaller picture I made in positive and the larger picture in negative. Covering, smooth paint requires atleast 3-4 layers. Allow every layer to dry properly, otherwise the new layer will wipe the previous layer off. After the first layer, you can detach the tapes and check the result against the light to see where it needs more paint. When last layer was drying, I prepared the background. For small picture I used golden sweetie wrapping and for the larger one the kitchen foil. I wrinkled the kitchen foil first, but be carefull, because it developes holes and rips quite easily. Authentic verre eglomise paintings have real gold or silver leaf, glued with gelatin. I glued the foils to the back of the picture frame with glue stick and trimmed the edges. After the paintings had dried on the glass, I put the frames back together. Foil can scratch the black paint, so be carefull when installing the back of the frame. And tadah, eglomise-paintings are ready. They turned out just as I was hoping for! Next I want to test this with the leaf metal, then result will be smoother. Happy Halloween!

Pienet folio-karkkipaperit riittävät juuri ja juuri tuollaiseen pieneen kehykseen. /
Small foil sweetie wrappers are just big enough for small frame.

Maalaaminen vaatii tarkkuutta. /
Painting requires precision.

Kaksikaan kerrosta maalia ei riitä peittämään kaikkia aukkoja.
