Parisen vuotta sitten kirjoittelin joulukalenterissa kokkaus-kokeiluistani leivinuunin kanssa. Viime talvena kokkailut leivinuunilla j\u00e4iv\u00e4t melko v\u00e4hiin, mutta ehk\u00e4p\u00e4 saan otettua senkin homman taas t\u00e4n\u00e4 talvena haltuun paremmin. Leivinuuni ei valitettavasti ole alkuper\u00e4inen, se on muurattu uudelleen ehk\u00e4 joskus 80-90-luvuilla, eik\u00e4 meill\u00e4 ole tiedossa miten hyvin se vastaa alkuper\u00e4ist\u00e4 mallia, mutta puuhella ainakin on j\u00e4tetty pois t\u00e4t\u00e4 uutta tehdess\u00e4. Perinteinen rappaus siit\u00e4 ainakin puuttuu. Hormin muuri sen sijaan on p\u00e4\u00e4llystetty \u00e4ll\u00f6tt\u00e4v\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja ep\u00e4k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6llisell\u00e4 Kolibri-pinnoitteella. Ep\u00e4k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6llinen se on siksi ett\u00e4 t\u00e4ss\u00e4 kyseisess\u00e4 tapauksessa pinnoite on muotoiltu ehk\u00e4 jollakin telalla ter\u00e4v\u00e4pintaiseksi. Keitti\u00f6ss\u00e4 se ker\u00e4\u00e4 kaiken rasvan ja p\u00f6lyn pieniin uriin ja ter\u00e4v\u00e4t harjanteet est\u00e4v\u00e4t tehokkaasti sen puhdistamisen. Pinnoitteen poistaminen vaatii moukaria tai kulmahiomakonetta. Ajattelin nyt kuitenkin esitell\u00e4 teille hiukan tarkemmin n\u00e4m\u00e4 talomme muut uunit, sill\u00e4 niit\u00e4 piisaa. Alakerran joka huoneessa on oma uuni, yl\u00e4kerrassa vain yksi. Puuhellan purun j\u00e4ljilt\u00e4 talossa on viel\u00e4 yksi vapaa hormi, joten olisi mahdollista asentaa viel\u00e4 yksi tulipes\u00e4. Hiukkasen haaveilen valurautakamiinasta yl\u00e4kerran keitti\u00f6\u00f6n. Se on ehk\u00e4 projektilistan loppup\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4, enk\u00e4 ole aivan varma onko se edes mahdollisuuksien rajoissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tulipes\u00e4t ovat vanhan talon syd\u00e4n. Niill\u00e4 vetoisenkin talon nurkat pysyv\u00e4t l\u00e4mp\u00f6isen\u00e4 melko edullisesti. Mainitsin aiemmin er\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 postauksessa ett\u00e4 t\u00e4n\u00e4 syksyn\u00e4 tarvitsimme muurarin palveluksia parin tulipes\u00e4n korjaamiseen. Kahden kaakeliuunin tulipes\u00e4ss\u00e4 oli muuraus ravistunut ja tiili tai pari kellahtanut. Kokenut muurari korjasi ne tuotapikaa, mutta antoi samalla ik\u00e4vi\u00e4 uutisia. Ruokasalin reilun satavuotias kaakeliuuni on nimitt\u00e4in melkolailla tiens\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4. Se onkin talon uuneista eniten k\u00e4ytetty. Edellinen asukas on asunut l\u00e4hes yksinomaan t\u00e4ss\u00e4 huoneessa, keitti\u00f6n lis\u00e4ksi, ja l\u00e4mmitt\u00e4nyt uunia ihan urakalla. Ehk\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n turhankin kuumaksi, sill\u00e4 muutama kaakeli on kuumuudesta haljennut. Vaikuttaa siis sille ett\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 ruokailuhuoneen kakluuni menee ensi kes\u00e4n\u00e4 uudelleenmuuraukseen. Tai sit\u00e4 seuraavana. Katsotaan miten rahkeet kest\u00e4\u00e4. Ruokailuhuoneen uuni l\u00f6ytyy Turun kaakelitehtaan kuvastosta vuodelta 1920, malli numero 3<\/a>, tosin kuvastossa on erilaiset luukut. Tuo luukku on muuten todella \u00e4rsytt\u00e4v\u00e4, kipin\u00e4suojukseen kuuluisi kuulemma jonkinlainen metallinen irrotettava kahva, joka on t\u00e4st\u00e4 hukkunut aikoja sitten, joten luukun avaamiseen tarvitaan pannulappua ja vahvoja sormia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaakeliuunit eiv\u00e4t ehk\u00e4 ole aivan tyypillisimm\u00e4t 1900-luvun kakluunit. Niiss\u00e4 ei ole en\u00e4\u00e4 romantiikan koristeellisuutta, eik\u00e4 edes jugendin koukeroisuutta. Ne ovat tyylilt\u00e4\u00e4n pelkistetympi\u00e4 ja suoraviivaisia, joskin py\u00f6re\u00e4muotoisia kulmistaan. Salin uunia koristaa ainoastaan pieni hyllyreunus sek\u00e4 kiilt\u00e4v\u00e4 messinkinen luukku. Salin uuni vaikuttaisi olevan yhdistelm\u00e4 Turun kaakelitehtaan kuvaston malleista 2 ja 3, sill\u00e4 t\u00e4ysin samanlaista kuvastoista ei l\u00f6ydy. Talon tarkka rakennusvuosi ei ole tiedossa, mutta talo n\u00e4kyy jo vuoden 1904 kartassa, joten rakennusajankohta lienee jossakin siell\u00e4 aivan 1900-luvun alkuvuosina. Taloon on tehty muutoksia rakentamisen j\u00e4lkeenkin, joten on tietysti mahdollista ett\u00e4 uunitkin on muurattu my\u00f6hemmin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kakluunien ja leivinuunin lis\u00e4ksi talossa on viel\u00e4 kaksi p\u00f6ntt\u00f6uunia. Hopeidenkiillotushuoneessa on perinteisempi py\u00f6re\u00e4 p\u00f6ntt\u00f6uuni. Valitettavasti t\u00e4m\u00e4nkin tulipes\u00e4 vaatisi korjausta, joten t\u00e4t\u00e4 olemme varovasti l\u00e4mmitt\u00e4neet vain satunnaisesti kovemmilla pakkasilla. Yl\u00e4kerran p\u00f6ntt\u00f6uuni sen sijaan on erikoisempi kulmikas malli. Lis\u00e4ksi uunin luukku on erikoisempi, ilmanottoaukon s\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6 tapahtuu ruuvaamalla. Rakennusmestarimme oli t\u00e4st\u00e4 luukusta erityisen innostunut. Yl\u00e4kerran uunia olemme my\u00f6skin l\u00e4mmitt\u00e4neet vain satunnaisesti sill\u00e4 yl\u00e4pohjassa hormi vaatisi rappausta ja paloeristett\u00e4 paloturvallisuuden vuoksi. T\u00e4h\u00e4n uuniin t\u00e4ytyisi hankkia ritil\u00e4arina, se helpottaisi uunin k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4. Miss\u00e4\u00e4n muissakaan uuneissa ei ritil\u00e4arinaa ole, ja se tarkoittaa ett\u00e4 hiili\u00e4 ei voi vain kolata ulos vaan ne pit\u00e4\u00e4 kauhoa pois. Leivinuunissa on tulipes\u00e4n etuosassa hiililuukku johon hiilet ja tuhkat voi kolata. Olen yritt\u00e4nyt etsi\u00e4 uuneihin sopivaa kolmijalkaa tai kevytt\u00e4 siirrett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 arinaa jotta voisin kokata my\u00f6s muualla kuin leivinuunissa, mutta ei ole tullut sellaista viel\u00e4 k\u00e4ytettyn\u00e4 vastaan. Pit\u00e4\u00e4 ehk\u00e4 tilata jostakin sep\u00e4lt\u00e4 sellainen. <\/p>\n\n\n

Couple years ago I wrote about my cooking experiments with out baking oven. Last winter I didn’t really do much cooking with it, but perhaps this winter that will change. Unfortunately oven is not original. It was replaced by new one in around 80’s-90’s. We don’t know what the original looked like, but it also had woodburning range for cooking and heating water. Traditional plastering has been left out. However the flue brickwork has been covered with horrid 90’s decorative 3D-paint called Kolibri. It is very impractical because it’s been spread with some sort of roller which has created very sharp ridges and tips on it. It’s been topped up with yellow latex paint. It is impossible to keep clean because grease and dust gather in all the little dents and “holes” and it’s impossible to clean because of the sharp tips. To remove it requires either heavy duty hammer or angle grinder. But let’s have a look at all the other fireplaces in our house, because there is plenty. On the ground floor there is one fireplace in every room. Second floor has only one fireplace. When cooking range has been removed, that has left one flue free to use. So atleast technically there would bee option for installing one more fireplace. I am dreaming of cast iron fireplace with one cooking plate for upstairs kitchen, but I am not sure if it’s possible. Atleast that is at the far end of our to-do-list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fireplaces are the heart of the old house. These drafty corners stay warm with moderate cost, when there is lot of fireplaces. Earlier I mentioned that this Autumn we needed bricklayers help to repair couple of the fireplaces. Experienced bricklayer fixed them really quickly, but also gave us some bad news. The fireplace in dining room is coming to the end of it’s life. Previous owner has been basically living in this one room and has been heating up the fireplace a lot. Fireplace has been running too hot, which has damaged the construction and broken some tiles too. So it seems that this fireplace will need re-doing next summer, or the next. Let’s see how it goes. Dining room fireplace is shown on the catalog of Turun kaakelitehdas (Tile factory of Turku) in year 1920, model number 3<\/a>. Allthough in the catalog the fireplace hatch is different. That hatch is really annoying, the spark guard is suppose to have some sort of handle, but it’s gone missing before our time. So opening the spark guard you need oven mitts and strong fingers. These type of Nordic fireplaces are also called masonry stoves or masonry heaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiled fireplaces are not the most typical early 1900’s fireplaces, I suppose. They don’t have the decorative details of romantic era, neither they have the nature motifs or curls of jugenstil. They are much more simplistic in style, but rounded on the corners. Only decorations on living room fireplace are little shelf and brass hatch. It seems to be combination of models 2 and 3 on Turku tile factory catalog, because there is no identical fireplace in there. The exact building year of the house is not known, but the house is marked as early as 1904 map. House was probably built on very early 1900’s. Changes have been made to the house later on, so it is also possible that the fireplaces have been added later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the tiled masonry fireplaces and bread oven, we also have two other traditional fireplaces which are called “bin fireplace”, p\u00f6ntt\u00f6uuni in Finnish. It comes from the construction of the fireplaces: mansonry covered with sheet metal, aka “bin”. Usually they are round, like the very traditional one in our utility room. Unfortunately this fireplace also needs repairs, because couple bricks have tilted inside, so we have been using it only on the coldest days of the winter. Upstairs bin fireplace is a bit more unusual, because it is square shape. Also the hatch is a bit unusual, the coal hatch works with massive screw. Our construction manager was very interested in this one, because he had not seen similar hatch before. We have warmed the upstairs fireplace only very occasionally, because the chimney needs plaster for fire safety. It also might benefit from grate. None of our fireplaces have grates, it means we just have to shovel the coal out. Bread oven actually has a little coal shoot with lid, where you can drop the coals into. I have tried to find proper iron trivet so I could cook in the other fireplaces too, however I haven’t seen anything yet. Perhaps I have to order one from a blacksmith. <\/p>\n\n\n
