Olen maininnut meid\u00e4n maakellarin usein. Se varmaankin toistuu jutuissani siksi ett\u00e4 haaveilen jo kovasti ajasta kun se on taas k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kuntoinen. Muuta kellaria ei rossipohjaisessa talossamme olekaan. Kellari olisi meille kullanarvoinen, sill\u00e4 t\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 haja-asutusalueella muut kylm\u00e4s\u00e4ilytystilat eli j\u00e4\u00e4kaapit ovat melko arkoja s\u00e4hk\u00f6katkoille ja haukkaavat lis\u00e4ksi ison osan koko talouden s\u00e4hk\u00f6nkulutuksesta. Kuten olen aiemminkin kertonut, maakellarista puuttuvat ovet, sen tuuletusaukko on mullan tukkima, katolla kasvaa puita ja t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 se toimii l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 erilaisen materiaalin v\u00e4livarastona. Kellarin kunnostus on aloitettu pari vuotta sitten kaatamalla sen tuuletushormin p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 kasvanut kuusi. Toiveissa on ett\u00e4 loput puut kaadetaan ehk\u00e4 ensi talvena. Viikko sitten l\u00f6ysin kellarin katolta my\u00f6s tammen taimen. Sen aion siirt\u00e4\u00e4 melko pian uuteen, parempaan paikkaan, sill\u00e4 kellarin katolla paalujuurinen tammi ei voi kasvaa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En tied\u00e4 tai ymm\u00e4rr\u00e4 maakellarin kunnostuksesta k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n tasolla juuri mit\u00e4\u00e4n, mutta tied\u00e4n ett\u00e4 tuuletushormin t\u00e4ytyy pelata ja ovien t\u00e4ytyy olla eristetyt, jotta pakkanen ei p\u00e4\u00e4se kellariin. Ep\u00e4selv\u00e4\u00e4 viel\u00e4 siis on miten tuuletushormi tai eristetyt ovet rakennetaan. Meill\u00e4 on kaksi vanhaa, mahdollisesti kellariin sopivaa ovea, mutta kumpikaan ei ole eristetty. Saattaa olla ett\u00e4 joudumme rakentamaan molemmat ovet alusta asti itse. Kaikki vinkit ovien ja hormin osalta otetaan ilolla vastaan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kellari on noin 3 metri\u00e4 pitk\u00e4 ja 2 metri\u00e4 leve\u00e4. Eteinen on noin 1,5 pitk\u00e4 ja hiukan alle metrin levyinen. Olen suunnitellut perinteisi\u00e4 valkoiseksi kalkittuja seini\u00e4 ja mik\u00e4li mahdollista tiililattiaa. Tosin, t\u00e4m\u00e4 on melko kivinen m\u00e4ki. Mik\u00e4li maapohjassa on isoja kivi\u00e4, tiili\u00e4 ei ehk\u00e4 ole mahdollista latoa mitenk\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4rkev\u00e4sti, mutta osittain ladonta ehk\u00e4 onnistuu. Jonkun verran maapohjaa t\u00e4ytynee ainakin kaapia pois tiilien ja ladontahiekan tielt\u00e4. Hiekkapohjainen tiililattia parantaisi kellariin mahdollisesti tulevan veden imeytymist\u00e4 maan sis\u00e4\u00e4n. Olen tarkkaillut kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 tilannetta ja toistaiseksi en ole havainnut tulvimista enk\u00e4 varsinaista l\u00e4t\u00e4k\u00f6itymist\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n. T\u00e4n\u00e4 kev\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4 tosin tilanne oli hiukan normaalista poikkeava my\u00f6h\u00e4isen takatalven vuoksi ja eteisen lattialle muodostui sulamisvesist\u00e4 l\u00e4t\u00e4kk\u00f6 joka j\u00e4\u00e4tyi. Uskon ett\u00e4 oviaukon etupuolelta maanpinnan muotoilu v\u00e4hent\u00e4\u00e4 riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti veden valumista sis\u00e4\u00e4n, sill\u00e4 aiempina kev\u00e4in\u00e4 vett\u00e4 ei ole eteiseen valunut. Itse kellariin ei l\u00e4t\u00e4kk\u00f6j\u00e4 muodostunut, mutta yhdest\u00e4 kattopaaden saumasta sis\u00e4lle tiputti hiukan vett\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiililattian tarkoituksena on my\u00f6s tehd\u00e4 tasaisempi, tukeva lattiapohja valmiille metallirunkoisille hyllyille. Ja kyll\u00e4h\u00e4n sellainen tiililattia my\u00f6s n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kivalta. Se tekisi kellariin sellaista tiiliholvimaista viinikellari-tunnelmaa. Emme erityisemmin harrasta viinej\u00e4, mutta miksip\u00e4 ei kellarissa viinej\u00e4kin voisi pienimuotoisesti s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4. Kevyit\u00e4 metallirunkoisia hyllyj\u00e4 ajattelin siksi ett\u00e4 kellarin kosteus nousee maapohjasta yl\u00f6sp\u00e4in ja kokonaan puusta rakennetut hyllyt joutuu uusimaan aika ajoin kun ne m\u00e4t\u00e4nev\u00e4t. Metallikin toki ajan oloon kosteassa ruostuu, mutta kevytrakenteisena ne on ehk\u00e4 helpompi nostaa ulos ja huoltaa tarvittaessa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kellarissa olisi tulevaisuudessa tarkoitus s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 mehuja, hilloja ja muita s\u00e4ilykkeit\u00e4, sek\u00e4 mahdollisesti juureksia ja talviomenoita. Kellari-remontin valmistuttua kuitenkin vasta selvi\u00e4\u00e4 millaiset olosuhteet siell\u00e4 vallitsevat, sill\u00e4 eri juurekset vaativat hiukan erilaiset olosuhteet. Peruna viihtyy noin 5 asteessa, punajuuri 1-2 asteessa, porkkana hiekkapedill\u00e4 nollassa asteessa, purjo asteen pakkasen puolella. Omenia ei saisi s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 samassa tilassa juuresten kanssa sill\u00e4 niist\u00e4 erittyy etyleeni\u00e4 joka nopeuttaa muiden kasvisten pilaantumista. T\u00e4st\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 voi olla ett\u00e4 omenoiden s\u00e4ilytys ei kellarissa onnistu. Toki kokeillahan silti voi ja katsoa miten k\u00e4y. Paljon riippuu siit\u00e4 millaiset olosuhteet kellariin saadaan ja pysyyk\u00f6 se riitt\u00e4v\u00e4n viile\u00e4n\u00e4 ilman ett\u00e4 pakkanen p\u00e4\u00e4see sis\u00e4\u00e4n. S\u00e4hk\u00f6j\u00e4 kellariin ei ainakaan t\u00e4m\u00e4n hetken suunnitelman mukaan tulla vet\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, sill\u00e4 kellari olisi tarkoitus pit\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollisimman energiatehokkaana ja ekologisena. Koska kellari ei ole ollut k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 vuosikymmeniin, voi olla ett\u00e4 sen p\u00e4\u00e4lle joudutaan kasaamaan lis\u00e4\u00e4 multaa eristekerrokseksi. Valaistuksena k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n lyhtyj\u00e4 ja otsalamppuja. Kellariin voisi my\u00f6s tehd\u00e4 s\u00e4ilytystilat joillekin puutarhakasveille, jotka selvi\u00e4v\u00e4t talvetuksesta pime\u00e4ss\u00e4. Mahdollisesti my\u00f6s joitakin puutarhaty\u00f6v\u00e4lineit\u00e4 voisi siell\u00e4 varastoida, ainakin siihen asti kunnes saan kasvihuoneen. Purkki- ja pullohyllyjen lis\u00e4ksi siell\u00e4 tarvittaisiin sopiva tila juureslaatikoille ja mahdollisesti pieni penkki tai p\u00f6yt\u00e4taso. Koko kellaria ei kannata t\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 hyllyill\u00e4 sill\u00e4 my\u00f6s tyhji\u00e4 juureslaatikoita t\u00e4ytyy s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 jossain ja niille paras paikka lienee pinossa lattialla. Eik\u00e4 kahden ihmisen vuoden mehu- ja s\u00e4ilykevarasto nyt niin j\u00e4ttim\u00e4inen ole ett\u00e4 vaatisi kymmeni\u00e4 hyllymetrej\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lopuksi viel\u00e4 viimehetken tapahtumavinkki<\/strong>. Viel\u00e4 t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n nimitt\u00e4in p\u00e4\u00e4see tutustumaan talonpoikaismuseo Yli-Kirrassa Punkalaitumella Kaikkien aikojen maatalousn\u00e4yttelyyn. Maatalousn\u00e4yttely on avoinna t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n klo 10-17, p\u00e4\u00e4symaksu 15\u20ac. N\u00e4yttelyss\u00e4 voi n\u00e4hd\u00e4 ty\u00f6n\u00e4yt\u00f6ksi\u00e4 nypl\u00e4yksest\u00e4 p\u00e4reen h\u00f6yl\u00e4ykseen, kehr\u00e4yksest\u00e4 k\u00f6ydenpunontaan ja hevosen kengitykseen. Myynniss\u00e4 on museon omia tuotteita kuten tervaa ja saippuaa, sek\u00e4 herkkuja puurosta keittoon ja grillimakkaraan. Tapahtuman ajan my\u00f6s museon laaja pihapiiri ja esineist\u00f6 on n\u00e4ht\u00e4viss\u00e4. Koiram\u00e4en taloksi<\/a> kutsuttu museoalue on avoinna koko kes\u00e4n perjantaista sunnuntaihin klo 11-17. Mauri Kunnaksen Koiram\u00e4en talon pihapiiri perustuu nimitt\u00e4in juuri Yli-Kirraan. Museo on muutenkin tutustumisen arvoinen vaikka ei maatalousn\u00e4yttelyyn en\u00e4\u00e4 ehtisik\u00e4\u00e4n. Museo toimii t\u00e4ysin vapaaehtois-voimin eik\u00e4 saa valtion rahoitusta joten tapahtumat ovat heille t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 tulonl\u00e4hteit\u00e4. <\/p>\n\n\n

I have mentioned our ground cellar many times. It keeps popping up in my posts probably because I am so much dreaming of the time when it’s back in action. After all, that is the only cellar we have. It would be invaluable to us, because other cold storages like fridges and freezers are quite vulnerable here in the rural area. Power cuts happen. Electricity has been pretty expensive recently and those take quite a chomp of our full power consumption. Like I have mentioned before, cellar doors are missing, the ventilation is blocked by dirt, there are trees growing on the roof and at the moment it works mainly as a temporary storage space for things. We started the renovation of the cellar by cutting down couple years ago a spruce, which was growing ontop of the ventilation. Hopefully rest of the trees will be cut down next winter. Week ago I also found little oak sappling from the roof. I have to move that to another location soon, because oak makes really big roots and therefore can’t be left to grow ontop of the cellar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t really know much about the cellar construction in practice, but I do know that ventilation has to work and doors have to be insulated, so that cold doesn’t get in. It is still a bit unclear how to make the ventilation or the insulated doors. We do have two old doors, which might work, but neither of them is insulated. It could be the case that we might have to build both doors from scratch. All tips for making cellar doors and ventilation are happily accepted!<\/p>\n\n\n

Doorway is quite low as the cellar doors often tend to be. Even the doorframe is missing completely. I doubt we can find readymade door for this due to unusual size. Ground cellar always has to have two doors, so that you can go in there in the winter without freezing your root vegetables. Outer door can’t open outwards due to large rock on the left. But entrance is long enough so that you have room to stand in the hallway when closing the outer door before opening the inner door.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Ground cellar is about three meters long and two meters wide. Doorway is about 1,5 meters long and under a meter wide. I have been planning the traditional lime washed walls and if possible, red brick floor. However, this little hill is very rocky. If there is too much rocks on the ground, it might not be possible to lay the bricks properly, but perhaps atleast partially. Atleast some amount of dirt has to be scraped out of the floor, to be replaced by bricks and sand. Sand and brick floor would help the water drainage of the floor in case of pooling or flooding. I have been keeping an eye on the flooding, and I have not noticed any in the spring. Allthough this spring was a bit exceptional. We had very late surprise winter in April, which caused melting snow pooling in the entrance of the cellar, which then froze up. This have not happened before and I believe if I just shape the ground in front of the entrance, pooling should be prevented in the future. Cellar itself didn’t get pools of water, but one seam in the ceiling was dripping little bit of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brick floor is also creating more even and sturdy base for readymade metal frame shelving. And it also looks nice. It would give cellar a bit moreMediterranean wine cellar atmosphere. We are not really much of a wine aficionados, but why not store some wines there too. I was thinking of using lightweight metal frame shelving, because wooden shelving rots in time. Moisture creeps up from the ground and eventually wooden shelving has to be renewed. Metal also rusts in time, but lightweight shelving is easy enough to carry out and do some maintenance, when needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the future we plan to store juices, jams and other preserves and possibly also root vegetables and winter apples. However the actual conditions of the cellar we will find out after the renovation is done. Different vegetables require a bit different temperatures. Potato likes plus five Celcius, beetroot about 1-2 degrees, carrot preferres sandbed in zero Celcius and leek preferres one degree below zero Celcius. Apples should not be stored at the same room, because they have lot of ethylene, which speeds up the rotting of other vegetables. For this reason it might not be possible to store apples in the cellar at all. Allthough we can always test and see what happens. A lot depends on the conditions of the cellar and are we able to keep the temperature above zero. We will not install electricity in the cellar, because we want to keep it as energy efficient and ecological as possible. Because cellar has not been used for decades, we might have to pile up more dirt ontop of it for insulation. Lighting will be lanterns and headlamps. We could also make storage area for garden plants which can handle winter in the dark. Possibly we could also store some gardening tools in there, atleast untill I will get green house. In addition of shelves for bottles and jars, we need spaces for vegetable boxes and possibly small bench or counter. There is no point in filling whole cellar with shelves, because empty vegetable boxes are best stored in a pile on the floor. Juice and preserve stock for two people is not that massive anyway, so it doesn’t require dozens and dozens of meters of shelving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally a last moment event suggestion<\/strong>. Today is the last day of peasant museum Yli-Kirra’s All time Farm fair, located in Punkalaidun. Farm fair is open today 10-17 and entrance fee is 15\u20ac. They have wide variety of work shows from bobbin lace to shingle cutting, yarn spinning to rope weaving and horse shoeing. they are also selling their own produce like pine tar and home made soap and treats like traditional oatmeal porridge, soup, grilled sausages and so on. During the event the large museum area and buildings with lot of things to see, are open. Museum area is also called Dog Hill <\/a>(Koiram\u00e4ki) because the famous Dog Hill cartoons by Mauri Kunnas are based on Yli-Kirra. Museum is definitely worth visiting, even if you don’t make it to today’s event. Museum is open whole summer fri-sun 11-17. This museum runs completely on volunteer work and does not receive any government funding, so these events are their most important way of funding. <\/p>\n\n\n

Bottom of the ventilation hole is on the backwall of the cellar and dirt is pouring in the cellar. Hole is pretty wide, probably unnecessary wide. Something needs to be done. In addition to cleaning, perhaps some sort of smaller ventilation pipe might work, but what to do with the large hole. Roof\/ceiling is made of massive over 2 meters long rocks, which have been seamed with concrete. Seam above the inner door is letting little bit water through in spring. I wonder if anything can be done to that or is it harmless feature?<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

There are several small and larger trees growing on the roof of the cellar. They have to be cut down before we can start using the cellar. The plan is to plant small flowers and other plants which don’t have big roots. Possibly we also need to pile more soil ontop for extra insulation.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

In the main room of common house is this huge fireplace with massive bread oven. They lit fires to the bread oven only 2-3 times per year. So people were able to get fresh bread only then, on other times they ate ryebread which was dried on bread roost.
